32M of DDR2 1020 MHz cas 3-4-3-10

Just playing around with the Gigabyte P965 DQ3, and a old Prescott 560, and I gotta say... I am pretty damn impressed with this little board.

it doesn't OC as well on actual MHz as my old Asus 975X, but it does do tighter timings, at the same OC levels, and when the OC is too high, this board has about 10 times greater chance at recovering and rebooting then the Asus board did, so I am definatly happy to not have to be clearing the CMOS every 10 minutes like I was with the P5WD2-E, when testing ram.

anyways, I was testing ram, and I guess 32M is a good place to start... so here it is, 32M at cas 3-4-3-10.

Mushkin PC 8000 2 x 1 gig.

2.3 volts on ram.
+ .3 volts on chipset.
+ .1 on VFSB.

all other settings in bios on "Auto".

I know the score is slow... but thats not what I wanted to test ;)

It was mentioned by FELIX in another thread (Intel section) that this mobo has a bit of a problem with CAS, as supposedly some boards with Intel 965 Express. In other words, you are probably at CAS4.0, not CAS3.0 ;) Besides, 2.3v is rather too low for that speed at CAS3.0.

Benny has also claimed DDR2-1040Mhz CAS3 on that same board... Plus, windwithme has tested his MSI (965 chipset) and he noticed same thing...). So, don't get too excited just yet :D Even for CAS4.0, this is a great result :up:

yes, this board does have issues with the latency and holding its settings.

the problem is, that ras to cas 2, and TRP 2 dont work, and you cannot set anything lower then tras 9.
set tras 7 and you get 9, set tras 2 and you get 9...
no matter what, its always 9 at the lowest.

Ras to cas 2 and TRP 2 aren't even a option.
I tried everything I could to get them to stick, including switching out 2 different sets of ram, that I know will run 3-2-2 (Corsair 5400UL V1.2 and Mushkin PC 8000) but this board just will not run it.

but the Cas latency that part I have no issues with, set cas 3 its cas 3, set cas 4 its cas 4, and so on.

believe me, I spent 3 hours trying to get that shot, and rebooted like 100 times, trying to find the best speed.
(I kept trying too high MHZ, like 1050 and such)

I just continue to be on a lookout for memory clocking anomalies (just as with 1333fsb strap, hehe), so bear with me, please. But I will still say, that CAS3.0 at those clocks and voltage is highly unlikely :)

this is a old screen shot from my 975X.
this ram went well into 1100 mhz territory, and almost 1200 at cas 4-5-4.
unfortunatly, without the Asus boards, I just cannot seem to get up into the 1100 mhz territory again.

DFI 975X tops out at 950 mhz no matter what.

Gigabyte 965 DQ3 tops out at 1050 mhz, no matter what.

Asus... almost 1200 mhz, cas 5-5-4, or 4-5-4.

so why not just use Asus?
they die like nothing... 2 of them died on me in 2 weeks with very little "pushing", 1 had the Vdroop mod... it died.
next one, no mods... dies 2 hours after I get it.
they are just too damn fragile for me...

this ram didn't need 2.6 volts or anything to get that 4-4-3 on the Asus... why is it surprising that it can do 1 ghz now?

Kunaak can you please make exact test but set Cas to 4 to check the difference.

Gigabyte was never that good when I look back in the past, but it seems they have one of the best Conroe boards out right now.
I was originally gonna get the Asus, but they seem to be hit and miss. :/
I am also wondering why there are no conroe boards in stock in Germany. Not a single one. As soon as they are listed as in stock, they are gone within hours.
Apart from that, there is only a handful boards out, what I dont get. They had much time to develope them.
The DFQ3 seems to be a nice board. I hope the DQ4 will be out soon and at least as good as the DQ3.

Do you know if it has to do with the memory controller on the 965 board, which lets you run tighter timings?
