Kayl Black Frozen SS arrived - pictures inside!

Yay my Kayl Black Frozen SS phase change unit arrived just now. Here's some preliminary pictures uploaded here .

Please note is is an earlier prototype

Seems during shipping the condenser was pushed backwards from the front but i checked the inside and no actual operation damage done phew! Kayl said future units will be bolted down from the front of the condenser too to prevent it from happening :)

Unit measures WxDxH = 25cm x 50cm x 25cm with Kayl evap copper block rev3 and 1/4Hp 8cc compressor with r404a

Started the black beauty up and initially decided to use my new Digitech QM1538 DMM's thermal probe to measure the copper block surface temp but i couldn't apply enough pressure on the copper block base with the thermal probe in one hand and my digital camera in the other hand :heh:

So switched to using my infra-red thermometer with trusty rubber band so i can be hands free for taking snapshots :D

DMM measured as low as -37.3C pic taken only at -36.1C
Infra-red thermometer meased as low as -39C
Case unit display stabilized at -48C

Room temp was between 20-24C

I specifically asked Kayl to tune the system so it doesn't get too cold that cold bugged AMD64 cpus won't run, but for the system to be tuned to handle constant load better :)

Will find out if it's too cold for cold bugged AMD64 cpus or not later :D

DFI NF4 UT SLI-DR R.AB0 will be first board privileged to meet Kayl's Black Frozen SS :D

Taped up and 1st layer of Electrolube CPL done on front and backside.. touch dry needs 4hrs and 24hrs total for it heh.

Next Liquid Electrical Tape hehe

2nd stage = applying red Performix Liquid Electrical Tape (LET) - this stuff is some nasty stuuuff... i wore a face mask and disposable gloves in handling it after reading the warning label on back http://i4memory.com/phasechange/kayl...ation_004.html - reads this stuff avoid skin and eye contact, in some californian states is known to cause cancer, birth and reproductive defects :eek: :lol:

Is that warning when the LET is wet only or when it's dry and in rubber form as well ? scary!

I hope you aren't planning on cleaning that stuff off when you are done. I think it would be a complete pain in the arse. Nice SS though :) Can't wait to get one for myself.

i suggest kayl use heatshrink where the suction leaves the case. armaflex won't last long :)

i just hope with a bios upgrade my mobo will run conroe. i slod my amd system so didnt have to deal with the horible cold bug anymore.:D

nearly there... just going find out how much wattage the unit draws from my UPSs.. hehe

Plugged the unit into my APC BackUPS RS 1500VA/865W UPS which already has another pc connected to it with 268W idle load for that pc. So need to substract 268W from what i see on my UPS

Unit start up = spiked at 727W minus 268W = 459W then started dropping
Leveled out load = 536 to 560W minus 268W = 268-292W operating power draw on UPS

Now that unit is in my room decided to do some more standalone tests timing how long it takes to get cold reading the unit display temp :)

1st start up
2mins = reached 0.4C
3mins = -25.0C
4mins = -42.4C
5mins = -44.6C
10mins = -46.4C

shut it down waited 3-5mins and unit display temp read 9.7C

2nd start up
1min = -31.0C
2mins = -42.0C
3mins = -45.0C
4mins = -45.6C
5mins = -46.0C

Room temp = 24.3C

Looks wicked,

When i insulated my Board i also put the extra effort to make it 100% sealed.

TBH i enjoyed sealing the board, better to be safe than sorry.

That numbers you posted gives me idea of how much load he tuned it for... I think you are set for many years to come till CPU will ever approach that temp :) :p:

Hopefully it ain't too cold for bug bugged cpus hehe

I'll done a test mount with Artic Ceramique to see how the contact is with the evap base :D

It's running now with Opteron 148 CABYE 0543FPMW but every now and again i hear like a clunk sound from inside the unit ??

Also with stock 2200mhz at 1.4v bios is only reading between -19C to -12C and windows about the same idle. Load at 2200mhz at 1.4v stock increases in temps from -19C to -8C

Is this right or a bad mount ? If it is a bad mount might as well take advantage of it to see how far i can do on this Opteron 148 :)

11x280HTT = 3080Mhz stock vcore boot into windows fine just errored in stressprime quickly so bumped it to 1.45v vcore in bios and lasted a tad longer but guess need more vcore or bad mount playing up ?

strange i tightened the wingnuts a bit more for more IHS contact pressure and my temps rose 3-5C ???

Remount seems about the same... hmmm

Occasional clunk (refrigerant dripping back in) is all right. It just means unit is slightly overcharged.

Pretty common behaviour. Load to unloaded software reading will differ greatly. This is what we call delta increasing with power on phase change. With about 150w, I've seen deltas going about 30c+ from evap to cpu temperature.

I honestly think the unit was tuned for much heavier load than usual :P Since you wanted to avoid cold bug all together. I bet the evap temp doesn't drop much at all from idle to load... :p
Don't think you have bad mount at all if that is what evap reads. Don't tighten it too much where you start flexing mobo,... you will actually start having worse contact.

Only cpu I know that has gone close to 3ghz prime stable (dual core) with that low of v-core was fx-60... :P In my case, I need 1.6v or so... :) (opty 175)

Interesting took the cover off the unit and got -19/-20C in bios at stock and in windows this

noise it's quieter than my water cooling but that's cause my water uses thermochill 120.3 with 3x 12038mm panaflo 103cfm fans LOL

it's a quiet humm sound and now with a probe on the compressor, compressor only reads 49.1C :)

seems it froze in windows at -24C MBM5 guess too cold for stock.. so now i have it running memtest at 11x310HTT = 3413Mhz at 1.62v bios vcore bios read -10C hehe




Guess Kayl tuned it very well for high heat loads cpuz validated but not pi stable yet

Straight boot from bios into windows @11x320HTT = 3520Mhz at 1.65v (bios read -10C)

Guess i have to start off low and find my way higher one step at a time. Maybe it ain't cold enough above 3250Mhz ?

Opteron 148 on water did 3105Mhz 32M and 3050Mhz at 1.65v stressprime with +59C load temps here.

Versus 3200Mhz at same 1.65v with +6C to +8C load temps

So at load system display = -35.7C and idle = -41.0C, MBM5 reported -18C idle and +6C to +9C load

I have the exact same Opteron as you on a very similar system -evaporator, compressor, refrigerant etc...

My software temperature readings are strange also. For example the back of the motherboard is colder than my CPU software reading by about 20C. You appear to have a good mount so i wouldnt worry about it :)

if its not too much trouble could you put your fx60 under it as i have the exact same stepping as you and want to know if it is worth getting a phase unit, i know its cc2be so it will coldbug but if i have a rough idea at what then i would be much appreciated, dont want to buy a phase unit then it not work on this chip

I won't be using my FX-57/60 on it straight away using 148 as a guinea pig first but soon :)

Did an umount of the evap, found a few droplets of water under the socket's metal retention lever! How ya meant to protect under there ??

i always fill the socket and around it a lil with dielectric grease.

i heard if you dont you can get ice to form on the pins but that might just be a rumor. Anyways i never had any problems with the grease. Never had any condensation at all.

i never went as hardcore sealing a board as you did though.....

Lots of dielectric grease, everywhere you have a board/neoprene or neoprene/neoprene join :)
