Radeon X1800 XT (GPU: 1 GHz / Memory: 1 GHz)

I think this one deserves own thread.

Yesterday W1zzard was able to provide me a beta-version of ATITool which included options to raise the GPU speed for R520. Well.. it worked and didn't crash at 860 MHz limit where I was stuck with ATI's internal Winclk utility.

Radeon X1800 XT was cooled down to -80 Celsius and I applied some extra voltage to GPU and memory.

Radeon X1800 XT running GPU @ 1005,75 MHz and Samsung 1,26 ns GDDR3 memory @ 1003,50 MHz (2007 MHz DDR) in 2D-mode. No 3DMark05 yet.. I'll try that next.

I think this is the first time in world when graphics card breaks the 1 GHz barrier! On CPU side we saw this 6 years ago when Intel and AMD were really pushing Athlon and Pentium III to 1 GHz.

Hehe we have labeled few of our hard drives just to know for what platform OS is installed. This disk has couple of Win XP's installed in it and it used to be our Intel HD :)

I used 1,525 V (default 1,31 V).

Not sure if the GPU even needed that much to hit 1 GHz in 2D-mode but I was doing some 3DMark05 runs at +900 MHz speeds :cool:

Gold plated copper block I will feed LN2 through tomorrow morning.

Default core on mine is 1v and I can get to 1.5v :D I will soon find how close the XL and XT are.

I can do 1.5Ghz memory now, and I know 1.6Ghz + is still possible on this 1.4ns stuff.

I think they are pretty much the same. So getting your GPU also beyond the 1 GHz shouldn't be a problem at all. Good luck :toast:

How did you get the mem so high without cooling? (Or did you rig up something else that's not pictured?)

I can run 3DMark05 with default memory voltage @ 940 MHz without any additional cooling (just dryice / LN2) on GPU. So getting a screenshot from Windows XP desktop @ 1000 GHz wasn't too hard :)

I have a Sapphire's PURE CrossFire motherboard here with RS480 chipset but unfortunately I haven't studied it very carefully yet. DFI's nF4 board was a safe choice.

I'll post some 3DMark05 results on Thursday. Lets see if I can hit 12500 with a single card.

I think that you will be seeing over 13k Mark05 when running with the 1G / 1G card speed ;)

default (635/750) (w/ 3.6G CPU) = around 9500
854/940, CPU at 3.6G = 12100
1000/1000 = .... (feel free to do the maths) :D

This really makes me hope for the day when someone will come across a golden GPU that can hit something crazy like 1100Mhz. Heck, Macci hit 904 on an X850, and that's simply not possible on an average 850XTPE, no matter what you do. I'm sure Sampsa has a good card, but evertually ATi will crank out a couple that have even better OCing POWAH!

Did you try lower than -80C base?

You probably don't need one. Do some scaling experiments and see what the difference is. With dual cards it's all CPU bound. With one card, even a really fast one it's a little different. ;)

By the way, congrats on the 2x1GHz...but you have a lot more in that thing. Don't stop here.

I kinda wondered how Sampsa just casually mentioned that the core had no trouble whatsoever hitting 1Ghz. Led me to believe that 1Ghz/1Ghz was just a quick pit stop for us to celebrate a bit, and that the max. core #'s are still around the corner(hopefully tonight?). :)

I am trying a new pair of RAM that arrived this week, and because I had the X1800XL installed, I thought it would be nice to review them using it (and also because I´m lazy :p: ).

Anyways, I haven´t made a scaling experiment, but trying this modules I found this:

DFI nF4 SLI-DR
3200+ Venice (worst stepping on earth, I´m lucky it´s not mine)
Water
2x512 TCCD Modules (can´t tell you the brand and model yet)
X1800XL BBA
Antec TrueSomething 580w (12v1@19A, 12v2@19A)

As you can see there´s no change in the FPS as I overclock the processor (I used 275 at lousy timings, cause it´s this products SPD).

Try a different game....I think D3 has a frame limiter of sorts....those are weird results though :confused:

Very interesting....the games do have a CPU dependency akin to 3D05's with this card it seems.

That was a huge boost in memory bandwidth as well as core clock speed. Granted this was at high eye candy mode, but still speaks well for X1800 architecture.

Possibly some improved prefetch logic at work here? Maybe tied in with the ring bus mem controller?

I was talking specifically about 3DMark05. I haven't tried any of the games.

JuanFlaiter, Doom 3 has a cap @ 60 fps, so if you want to bench it, use com_fixedtic -1 command in console.

Grayskull, Yes the CPU doesn't matter that much with single card but I'm looking for the dual card benchmarks. 3DMark05 WR (17433) is still pwned by Shamino and his 7800 GTX SLI setup :)

If i bench Doom3, i get results > 60Fps without any cmd. :)

Yes with timedemos which have "nothing" to do with the real-life performance.. in the game you are limited to 60 fps and when benchmarking with Fraps.

But who is benching with Fraps? Normally u use the timedemos, or not? ;)

Hmm, we do all our benchmarks with Fraps in real-life-conditions and games to show min, avg and max framerates to our readers. Here is a link to my Radeon X1800 XT review and benchmarks. Text is in Finnish but you'll propably understand the images :)
