7800GT Vmod

I will be picking one up very soon... :D Has anyone figured out a Vmod for the core... :confused: I'm surprised that nobody has asked until now... :)

Vddr Mod - Connect a 20k variable @ highest resistance between pin 4 and pin 7 of IC No.1 and work your way down.

Oh gosh.....I dont have a webcam :slap: Maybe if I borrowed my buddie's pics from a review he did. Its a Sparkle 7800GT clocked @ reference speeds. He got a max of 525mhz on the core with a DD SLI block with no mods done yet..... :p:

I havent bought the card yet but I happen to be workin at a booth that has retail 7800GTs. Opened one up and got the ICs written down...... :D

I think that ViperJohn might be working on mods for the card, but I'll help anyway.

Can you check the voltage at the pin I've marked on both of the chips please.

It looks like one section of chip number 1 is controling Vdd, but I don't know what is being used for Vgpu (yet ;)). Can you check the resistance between the pin i've marked (pin 4) and ground on chip number 1 please.

Can you check the resistance with no power on (and the card out of the system if possible, but it shouldn't matter if its left in)

For the Vdd mod, connect a 20k variable resistor between pin 4 and ground.

The resistor I marked reads 1.202v when idle and bumps up to 1.420v when in 3D jus like with the GTX. Hope this is a suitable point on the PCB........ :p:

Good news I managed to find a magnifyin glass :D The chip is a Intersil 6563CRZ. It is a Two-Phase Multiphase Buck PWM Controller with Integrated MOSFET Drivers and can be found here ........ :p:

That looks like its the Vgpu regulator :). it looks very small tho, so it might be quite difficult to get readings from it or solder to it.
Can you try to get a bigger picture of the chip so that I can mark some pins and look for alternative solder points.

I suppose you are refering to the onboard RAM mod. In this case Vram mod a.k.a Vddr mod can be found pictured here if you dont wish to follow Vr-zone's mod..... :)

Jus a Heads Up for all you guys.......a 7800GT has already broken 9000 in 3DMark 2005 on High End Air at an ambient of 18*C with no artifacts which shows the potential of this baby and thats not even the max yet ! A waterblock will be used to see what the Card can do.... :p:

I did the VGPU on my 7800GT now I Can get artifact free 500Mhz @ 1.55V 48ºC Full (daily) or eighter 600Mhz @ 1.7V 57ºC Full (Bench)

Can you guys clear a few things up for me? The write-up over at VR-Zone says to use a 3k ohm trimmer for the vgpu but since most places I can find don't carry that size can I just use a 5k ohm trimmer? Also is there a minimum power rating, like 1 watt or something?

I'm also hearing two different ratings for the vmem mod trimmer. Should I use a 20k ohm or 10k ohm trimmer?

The write-up does a good job at showing where to solder one side of the trimmer but I'm not sure where the ground points are for either vmod. Can someone point them out for me?

Sorry for the noob questions but this is my first vmod and I don't want to screw it up.

use 20k trimmer for vmem so you can get original vmem as well (10k give you about +0.1V even at max resistance)

Can't you see at the picture above? that show you a good ground poit (at pcie connector)

The power rating of the variable resistors isn't important. There is not very much current/voltage going through the resistor, so the power in the resistor is very low. Just use the resistor with the smallest physical size that you can find :)

well my 3d fusion 7800 gt (400/1000) got here today. hopefully the trimmers will be here soon. i will spend my time waiting for the trimmers practicing soldering. hopefully this will go better than my ill faited attempt with my 7800gtx a month or so ago. this card does 475/1130 with no issues on stock cooling. hopefully the volt mod and chilled water will squexe a little more out of it.

Mine did 500/1200 on stock cooling and voltage so you should be able to get similar results with water and a volt mod.

mysterfix, what were your end voltages for the 630/1390 you have in your sig? my 7800gt does 492/1140 with auto detect and can do 500/1200 without any issues. haven't tried anything higher as of yet.

I'm at 1.7v gpu (3d mode) and 2.36v vmem. My card performed almost identical to yours at stock voltage so you may see about the same results as me.

10k will work, that's what I'm using. I set it to 3k before installing and rechecked it before booting up.

for the memory i could only do about 1150 at stock 2.08

Modded over thanksgiving, used 10k's for both as that's closest I had. Stock on my evga could get to around 480/1150. 1.62v/2.2v gets to 553/1300. It feels like the memory has a lot more but it's running naked so don't want to push it. maze4 acetyl does about 41 C load.

Quick question. When you do the V-mod on mem and GPU does it always stay at that voltage setting?? Even in 2d?

In other words after you do the mod can the volt levels in the bios change the card or does the volt modding completely overide those settings?

Debating whether I should do the bios volt mod or the hard mod. Which is better?

I`ve tried turning up the juice to the RAM, but I get artifacts and a freeze after a minute or 2...the stock HSF aint controlling the heat enough methinks... i`m impressed by the folk who have managed to get more out their RAM with a volt-mod on the stock cooler....

The Vcore is next to get some abuse/attention.....I`m controlling it through BIOS at the mo..want a hardmod so I cant control it in real-time. :)

it's funny i was at first scared to run them naked even without the vmod

not at all bad for 2.2v. can hold finger indefinately without discomfort, just to touch it for a second or two you wouldn't know it was above ambient.

then again, one of my 120mm rad/fan is blowing underneath the card, and given that the core is running at about 40 load much of the heat can dissipate through the pcb to the core to the water.

i got a 120mm door fan blowing on the card so i think that helps but i got ocz copper bga sinks installed now anyways but i must say they get quite warm with the volt mod

The variable resistors themselves are very reliable. The problem you were seeing was probably the Vgpu drooping under load.

how long will these cards last @ 1.6v??? i've got 1.5v bios mod, and i can do 500/1310. gonna try 1.55v and just leave the mem as is. hoepfully the results will improve a little when i get my psu back and i dont have to deal with a 10.9v on the 12v line underload.

Oh yea this is with a STOCK x2 3800 , ocz 3200 plat 2-3-2-5 1t 200mhz. Shooting for mid 8k's @ 2.8ghz.
EDIT : My 3dmark 05 score was 7941 like this, and 1.55v bios mod i was able to 510 on the core which yeilded 8055

The core volt in 2D and 3D is different.. And thay are that also after av vmod.. So, if you have + 0.1v in 3d you also get +0.1v in 2d....
The mem volt is the same in 2d and 3d , so it stays the same always..

Well, is the mod very difficult to do?

I dont want to do the memory mod but i could do the gpu mod.
How many have succeded with their mods? From what i understand, the chanses of messing the card up by just change the volt from 1.5 to 1.6 isnt very large, right?

Is there any GOOD "How-to?" out there? With good pics ;)

There is a link for the how to in the first post of this thread. If your not any good at soldering don't try it. Find someone else who can do it for you without killing the card. There are quit a few people who chimed in on this thread who could help you. VJ (ViperJohn)is one he also may be able to direct you to someone else if he can't help you.

before: 491 max
after: 527 max (hardly)

bottom card sucks, need a better than stock cooler. I'm at 1.525v now. Took me from 475 to 500mhz 24/7 no artifact stable. Ordering another zalman then up with the volts. IS 1.65v 24/7 safe? What about vdd? I'm going to do that soon as well.

When i v-modded my 9700pro a few years back i went to a mom and pop store and modded the crap out of it. I was running over 9800xt speeds with the thing. :)

Cool. I got the 10k and 5k variable resistors like i saw the guys using at VR-Zone and though i've done voltage mods, i've never used a variable resistor. I've always used the regular ones you solder on like when i v-modded the gpu and memory on my 9700pro. What kind of impedience should i have them set to as measured by my multi-meter before i go wiring everything up. I don't wanna fry my card by having them set wrong.

IMHO, I wouldnt put 1.65V through the core on air cooling. I`d draw the line at around 1.5, but its your card, do what you like.

2x10K pots will be fine, but you might need to turn them a fair way down to get a voltage increase. I have a 20K for my memory, which is fine but a smaller one might be better for the core...5K maybe? Not 100% sure bout that, please dont hold me to it.

I dont think the BIOS mod will have to be removed, seeing as you`re bypassing it, but i`m not 100% sure about that either

You`ll need a multimeter to check the voltages, but if you werent sure about that, I`m not totally convinced you should be voltmodding. No offense, but theres a lot that can go wrong.

looks like a CNPS7000B-AlCu cpu cooler he cut some off of to make it work on a gpu. looks pretty interesting.

Before vmod : 520core / 1200mem , After vmod : 600core / 1370mem

I know that i have to use a multimeter and i got one already. :)

But my temps with 1.5V biosmod is under 50 degrees load with this cooler, thats pretty ok and should handle more than 1.6V?

Hm so i should get a 5K for the core? Maby i'll do that, and a 10K for mems.
Actually i really dont want to add more voltage to my mems, so maby i'll just do the core to start with.

And about the cooler, almost all s939 coolers will fit on GT/GTX.

I also have a Zalman, full CU though, how would I go about mounting it onto the card, nonetheless keeping it upright

I think the distance between the mounting holes are the same as on 939.

Some guy has an zalman9500 on his 7800 for example, so its possible.

Had this lousy GT for awhile, and saw this thread yestarday. Got up this morning and modded the card and works perfectly. Ran it at 550/1200 and passed 9k in 05. Only wish ghetto infineon RAM on this thing clocked better.

Damn all of you and your high cores... I got the :banana::banana::banana::banana:tyest core clocker ever, even with 1.53volts I can't seem to get past 500... But my ram seems to like 1375 ;) Just needs more testing, perhaps better cooling...

Is that a water block I see?
