I am considering throwing some spare cycles that I have toward this, but I have a few challenges that might be a bit unique.
First off, my machines all have multiple CPU, and all run linux. Will the linux client natively use multiple CPUs? I tried to launch 2 copies of the client concurrently and it complained and quit.
Second, I have a bunch of machines behind a firewall. I am not running any sort of NAT or routing to the outside world, but I can probably set up a SSH tunnel. Has anyone gotten the client to work in this sort of environment? Any ideas/hints/methods to share?
All dual machines you will need two seperate directories with a client in each.
Its probably easier to use this installer:
http://forums.overclockers.co.uk/sho...oto=nextoldest
I'm not sure on the firewall issue, but I'll hunt around.
Regards
John.
Oh, and Welcome to the team :toast:
OK I have set up a proxy on the front machine. I have been doing a fresh run of "./FAH502-Linux.exe" on each machine to initial configure, and it seems to be the case that every machine gets the same "Machineid=" line. I have read on the internet that each copy needs to have its own "machineid". So, I am not sure if this is a problem or not.
Well I think I have figured out a setup that will work. I've thrown 50 dual cpu machines (100 CPU total) at the problem for now. How long before I should start seeing my results on the stanford page?
a day or two depending on the procs...
happy 100 and welcome to the team :bounce:
well, I hesitate to call myself part of the team just yet...I don't know if I'll be able to leave the machines running this all the time. There are some cooling issues in my computer room, and there are also some actual work that has to be done on them at times, so we'll just see. Maybe I will get addicted to the rush of "points" though :). I am mainly curious to see if I set everything up correctly.Quote:

Well, _something_ is FUBAR. Ran the machines overnight, and most of them completed at least one work unit, but all of them except the front node quit the client immediately on completion, and none of those that quit seem to have reported their results. I'm going to scale back to just a few nodes until I figure out how to get a proper setup, then turn the rest on for a while.Quote:

BTW- Welcome to team Xtreme! :toast:
well I have a few leads on the troubleshooting. I think actually that it is a problem with "screen" as doing a "screen -d -m ./FAH502-Linux.exe" does not produce the expected resutls. My current try is to do an expect script that will launch an interactive shell, _then_ run the client, then escape out of screen. Looks promising so far, but it takes so long to see positive or negative results that I won't really know for half a day if this try worked.Quote:

yes, I know how to use screen :). But when you are launching 100+ sessions , it's worth investing a little time in automating the process. Unfortunately, it takes so long to do a work unit that I have to wait a day to see if the automation went right.Quote:

well I was able to leave 38 CPUs to run over the weekend. I'm still waiting on a power drop in the machine room so that I can spread the electrical load out from one UPS that is a little bit overloaded before I can run all of them full bore.
We'll see how many points we can add to the team in a few days :). I'm afraid we'll never catch up with the mega teams but we can move up a little in the standings.

You are a gentleman and a scholar.
We as team 36362 are gaining considerable momentum and Pythagoras and I are not going to sit on our hindmost parts and not take notice. A membership drive and some other interesting things will definitely be happening for xtremesystems.org in the not distant future. Sign up now and be a part ! We will be kicking some serious buttocks!
****The above statement is a highly biased view of team 36362, the owners and operators of xtremesystems.org take no responsibility for the ranting of a madman.
We should put the Guide up on the front page as news, and then like a week later put the roster up on the front page as news...
maybe we can get some more users on the forum that way at least.
I just got done setting up a 3800+ X2 @ 2800 mhz with 2 F@H cores running. I did the usual tweaks.. I needed to test stability and this is the best way imho :) So, we will see how many WU i can crunch. Hopefully it will help you out. I was hoping i could have xfered my points from another i crunched for before, but i see standford disable that option now.
Welcome to the team.Let us know how that X2 is doing. If it can maintain 2800mhz then it will crunch good.
Yeah that's some serious MHz :)
Welcome to our team!!
I installed that FAHmon tool. my cores are showing up orange. Can someone point me out to what to look for to get them both green? Less than 24 hrs i hit like 245 WUs. Im not to pleased with the results.
I think your systems are erroring out, it takes a very stable rig to run F@H. what version of the program are you running? command line or GUI? in either case, start it with a switch -verbosity 9 so I can get some log details from you and figure our what is happening
i figured it out.. I had the switch used for Intel instead of AMd. i used ForceSSE and now it shows green. thanks
That's excellent news, your stats will start climbing. If you wish to use it, the link to your personal stats box for you signature is
"http://folding.extremeoverclocking.com/sigs/sigimage.php?u=156834"
Just take the quotes off and use that URL to your stats picture in your siggy.

hey guys, just downloadd the gui for folding and installed. i am running a3800x2 at 2550 with 2 gig of ram. anything i need to know about running on a dual core.?
Hi and welcome chronic,
To take full advantage of a dual core you could download the console version as well as running the gui, that will use both cores.
Yes, you can. Additional processors must run the console version (with the "-local" command-line argument if run on Windows). First, make additional directories for each processor and copy the FAH Console executable file into each. Then configure them with the -config switch, filling in settings for each. It is very important to make sure that under the "Advanced Settings" option each copy is given a unique machine ID (from 1 to 8). The first copy will default to a machine ID of 1, so additional copies should be given IDs of 2, 3, 4, etc. Each may then be run out of their installed directory, using the -local switch on windows."
So make a new directory and download the console version to that directory and then follow the directions above.
Regards
John.
I installed the GUI :D
I burn in my cpu a lot so this seems ideal :p:
Ok, I guess this can also be considered the Q&A thread? I have a couple:
1) I downlaoded this version (the one at the top)
http://folding.stanford.edu/download.html
I check the tweaking guide, but its all for a console version or something. Any tweaks.
2) How much can I expect from an A-XP 2200 @ 2.1ghz a day?
3) finally, how can I get one of those snazy sigs?
1) Personally, I'd strongly recommend the console version. It seems to offer a lot of "tweaks" and runs quicker than the graphical version.Quote:

Doesn't appear to be working yet, but should be once you get some WU submitted...
Welcome to the team!
DO you have a link to the console version? And, would it be worth it to me to uninstall the version I have now to run the console version and tweak it?
Hi all just getting up and running i'm installing console version and have made it to. Change advanced options? yes or no.
Hope i don't have to post for every question :)
Yes... if you just might want to check over that -advmethods flag is set on (or yes) which allows with Intel-cpu to get QMD WUs (for the best PPD rate).Quote:

Thanks for the help i'm up & running should show up on the team page shortly. heater :)
Installed beta 5.04 and chose to run as a service everthing is running but i have yet to be added to team. It ran overnight before i rebooted to run as service would that explain why i don't show up? After reboot it stared on same client i believe. Also does it upload manually or do i upload results.
Pic of log txt.
Need to see the log file to see whats going on. Any chance of attaching it to your post?

I hope this is it:) Edit: I'm on now. Ahead of Mod ha ha better re-instal quickly Mod ! Thanks for help and i will look for some tweeks now that i'm on the XS F@H team.
Alright, I got a question. This rig looks like its time to reinstall windows. Is there anything I have to save from the F@H folder so that its still sees I have only 1 cpu?? Or can I just save what I need and, reinstall windows, then reinstall F@H??
This is just a bump for you. I have no clue as i was struggling to get my name on the stat chart :) F@H for Team XS:woot:BTW i'm on now.Quote:

Alright, thanks pythagoras. Just the work folder (C:\Program Files\Folding@Home\work)
A single F@H will only run on 1 cpu, to do 2 cpus you need to install 2 clients in seperate folders using the -local command in windows and different machine IDs int he client. If you want to save the work you have done on your current block I would save the whole client folder and just copy it back when your done reinstalling.Quote:

Should normally be 1.
Alright, thanks Jupiler & Pyhagoras. I'll re-install windows & set it all back up.
Alright I got 2 more questions: How do I figure out how many points a WU is worth?? And, are there any tweaks I can make to the gui version (currently in taskbar) to make it crunch faster?
Sry for double post.
I dont believe you even have to worry about that, since I dont believe the number of CPUs is all that critical. You are talking about having on the stats page it would maybe show 2 CPUs?
Alright second, you can go to http://fah-web.stanford.edu/psummary.html to find out how much each project is worth.
Third, there is really no way to make it crunch faster other than the obvious overclocking more. I would recommend getting the console however since the gui tends to have a effect long term on 3d games
Well, I finally finished a new WU for the team. Took me over a week to do though. 500 frame Gromac, which seems absurd that it would take so long, because I just got another 500 frame Gromac, and it's almost halfway finished. This is on my 2.8 P4 laptop.
mod: i dont reccomend the GUI cause people have done tests apparently and over a whole block the gui can take upto 30 minutes longer than the cli(command line interface) client. Also like Admiral said, there is a negative and sometimes debilitating effect on 3D games. I installed the cli client on all my machines, even my main machines that I game and work on and have no problems with it running 24/7; that I notice.
Dragon: the time per work unit can vary cause there is more than one single type of 500 frame gromac unit, it can vary quite drastically as you have found out. I have also noticed that the same project # WU can vary even on the same cpu, which I find strange.
You guys should install FahMon http://fahmon.silent-blade.org/ if you want to see how long its taking you, what work unit your on, and what its point value is. Even if you have just one client, its a nice to know whats going on :)
Alright, so can you give me notes on how to install the command version? I'll give it a shot if its better.
check UnG's guide (It's in my sig.)Quote:

Alright, I got them both installed as services, but now I have no way of seeing how far they are (and how much is left). I found a program around here called fahmon, but I'm not sure which file to use to show the progress. Can anyone help me there?
Sure thing,
When you run fahmon point it at the folder you have folding at home installed in
for example all my boxes have a folder called FAH (where the folding data resides) so fahmon points to d:\fah (it automatically does the rest itself) btw with multiple machine on a network you can share the folder and point fahmon at the network address.
p.s if you are just running it from the root of a disk e.g running from c: then just point it a that.
Hope this is clear enuf :)
it says it needs a file though. The folder is C:/folding if that helps.
I thought i may have been that you hadnt started folding yet so to test i pointed a new 'test' client at an empty folder but no errors so thats not it.
I haven't seen this before but you could try the following ,
open fahmon and click fahmon then download new projects
also open task manager and ensure that folding is running if it is you will have a fahcore_**.exe running and a fah.exe running if they are not your not folding
Theres not much to it really with fahmon,
just ensure your folding project is running
and ensure that your are pointing fahmon a the folder i.e. c:\folding
Heres a screenshot of what everything looks like when its running i've
included the taskmanager, fahmon and the services.

hope this helps you fix the problem.

It seems like ASUS is one of the favorite motherboards, AMD processor (athlon or opteron???), RADEON graphics (I'll wait for the x1900 w/ 48pipelines) and it seems gigabyte has the best on out, OCZ or Ballistix ram (2 to 4 gig) or best on the market, plus I'll need a cooling unit and I don't think I'm going water cooled just yet.

BTW Welcome to Xtreme Systems :D
thanx for help guideing my nooberism around... :slapass:
I'll try to post there
yup us XS noobs leading the benchmarking world :)
Welcome nawsmoking.
when I press alt, ctrl del, all I see running is FAH504-console.exe and Fahcore_78.exe. I dont have any fah.exe. Is that a prob??
Nope, should be fine.
AFAIK, the file "fah.exe" doesn't even exist.
Its in Oublie's post though.
Maybe he renamed FAH502_console.exe to fah.exe to make it easier or so.
yup sorry modd, fah is actually fah_console i should have said. Looks like your running fine, did you get fahmon working ?
I think I did. It looks like this though, so I'm not sure if its correct. I still had to choose the file though:
http://img12.imageshack.us/img12/2923/fahmon2zo.th.png
Yeah thats spot on mate :) all you have to do now is convert all your D2ol and Rosetta rigs to fold for us. :D
I've got a few d2ol rigs I'll switch over soon, but rosetta has to stay on my brothers sempron rig.
How can i joined folding at home.
any requirements?
None whatsoever (apart from having a computer :) ) Just download the client (i recommend using the console), run it, choose a name and set your team id to
36362 (thats us) and let it run in the background, if you look around this forum you'll find some pointers on how to get the most points for your machine.
:)
I just signed up for the XS team and am folding for most of the day when I'm at work or when my comp is just sitting close it idle.
Deadeye
Thanks for joining the team, Deadeye. :toast:
Hi, just joined the team. I won't have too much of an impact I'm afraid, but hey, every little bit helps right? :toast:
Yea, every bit help. Thanks for joining the team vok. And welcome to xtremesystems.
ill be joining 24.7 as soon as i get my spare machine up and running.
Thanks for joining the team, introvert.
Welcome to XS. :welcome:
HI all i just started folding for XS a couple of days ago. I used to fold for OcUK a while ago but i run rosetta for XS now. F@H was the first D'C'ing i did and it got me addicted so i thought it would be nice to return here. I only have my laptop running 24/7 atm as my other rigs are running R@H, but i will be switching fully to F@H very soon.
however one question i have is whether cpu cache is important for F@H?
I ask because semprons and celeron m's are great for rosetta because only mhz really matter.
Happy Folding :toast:
In my experience, cache does make a difference.
I have a amd 64 3000 sempron and a amd 64 3000 NewCastle, and the NewCastle out crunches the Sempron by quite a bit.

just joined my mom's 2.4(something) to the team (F@H is far less visible than R@H, thus its my borging DC project of choice). Hopefully, I'll be adding a few more machines soon, but we'll see how things go.
Cheers for that femfolder!! guess ill have to get a presler then. :D
B_S I agree, it's much easier for borging than any others thanks to the service install, i have already attacked my parents rig hehe.

I just joined the team today,i am running a x2 3800 cpu and 2gig pc4000 mem
i can only run one instance of the program as i have a problem with my second core being real weak it fails dual prime but will pass single, my machine runs 24/7 so it should help some.
Thank you for joining Bloody_Sorcerer and walt466  :toast:
Not sure if I already welcomed melymel2789... umm who's counting ;) Happy FolPing :toast:
@ walt466: your sig image: that is link to Haltech's stats ? Carefull with that ;) You'll be added automagically here after you've finished first WU. Then you could ad own ID&stats- based sig from there. Patience ;) (remember [img][/img] also with your sig])
Im trying to run a console and a gui at the same time, i set console to machine 1 and gui to machine 2, when i run them both end up as machine 1 and the console log shows that i am a anounmos user and no team even tho i set it in the config file. both are working fine i just need to resolve this before the console finishes its work.
Did you put the -local switches... you find a guide at my sig ;)
yes, i used your guide to help me set it upQuote:

so you should open console with -configonly -local -switch, to put name, team and cpu ID info for that client. Hope this solves probs :)
