ABIT AS8 Modifications...ALL you need to know...56K/Wanring-photos...

Hi there everybody....... :)

Sorry that I don't have time to write a complete article about the mods of the AS8 mobo but let's start it here...... :)

Let's start with the Vdroop mod.........AS8 mobo when you pick - let's say - 1.4VCore , it gives you at IDLE 1.35Volts and at FULL load about 1.31Volts.......YES it has a VCore droop problem.......To solve this problem we must do the below mod.......

As we can see we solder one resistor of 1.8KOhms - BEST is 1.6KOhms - at leg 14 of this IC at the point showing on photo........In PARALLEL with the existing one.......and we are READY......With the 1.8KOhms we have a small droop at ONLY full load and not at IDLE........With a 1.6KOhms 1% resistor we are OK.......


EDIT : VDroop as it was BEFORE the mod........

EDIT 2 : we DO NOT UNSOLDER the existing resistor for the Vdroop mod........We just solder another one in PARALLEL with the existing one.......


VCore mod......

IF we want MORE VCore than the one that the mobo can provide as we can solder a 100KOhms trimmer at the spots in the photo below......We firstly trim it at it MAX resistance.......We solder one of it's side legs to ground and the middle one onto the spot in the photo........

VChip(VNorth) mod.......

We track this Winbond IC - near and left of the CPU's slot - and we solder a 50KOhms trimmer in PARALLEL with the existing resistor.......Best is to trim it up to 1.52Volts.......MAX 1.72Volts........BUT IF you go for HIGH fsb you might need to trim it up to 1.9Volts max......With 1.72Volts you could reach up to 360MHz+ fsb....... ;)

Vfsb mod......

By default it is at 1.21Volts.......The best I could get out of it was to trim it at 1.32Volts and no more....... ;)
Track this area close to Winbond IC left to Ram slots.....

There must be a 0Ohms resistor there - IF I remember well coz I was in a hurry that day so as to boot this mobo with my new toy and I didn't pay that much attention to it - PLEASE someone confirm this....... :D

EDIT 3 : It IS a 0Ohms resistor......

Solder a 1KOhms resistor at the spots showing into this photo........

Solder a 10KOhms trimmer in PARALLEL with the soldered resistor of 1KOhms......and trim it at its MAX resistance......

Trim as you wish but the best I got was at about 1.32Volts.....

VAGP mod...........

With this mod you can REALLY climb a bit higher at all confings : 1:1 , 5:4 , 3:2 ......... ;)

Trim it up to 1.95Volts if you wish.......... ;)

Solder a 50KOhms trimmer at those spots with in the photo below........

Trim it up to 1.95VAGP measuring it here.........

Measuring VAGP at the spot into the above photo , the real VAGP is about 2Volts.......When we trim it at 2Volts measuring at that spot , mobo will shut down from OVP........So just leave it MAX at 1.97 - 1.98Volts........If you encode a OVP VAGP problem , DON'T Panic......Just untrimm the VAGP trimmer with your rig shunted down - power off the PSU - and boot it up...... ;)


Vdimm mod isn't made coz I have my DDR Maximizer on it........ :D

VTT IS tracked by the mobo quit well I could say by a Winbond IC on the right of the RAM slots.......So NO NEED to mod the VTT........

Just try to glue a heat sink onto this tiny chip coz it provides up to 2A VTT.......It needs a heat sink.......like the photo below........ ;)

The SAME VTT chip is onto the MSI mobo too........ ;)

You could solder some 1500 - 3300uF/6.3V low esr electrolytic capacitors on the backside of the mobo if you wish for better VCore stability like the photo below........

You can glue some heat sinks ALL over the place if you'd like to.......

Solder ONTO those spots of the PCB....... ;)

You can solder a 1.8KOhms resistor AND a 22KOhms in PARALLEL with the 1.8KOhms so as to accive the "1.664" KOhms number... ;)

YES the Vdimm mod is IDENTICAL as the IC7-Max3 Mobo......You must remove the resistor AND the tiny SMD transistor to do so........Beware that afterwords you will NOT able to pick the 2.9 , 3 , 3.1 , 3.2 Voltages within the bios.....You HAVE to work with the 2.5 , 2.55 , 2.6 , 2.7 , 2.8 Voltages.......Trim the trimmer at 3.5Vdimm for the 2.8Vdimm within the bios.....PLUS you HAVE to mod your PSU at almost 3.75Volts to do so....... ;)

well, i can solder a 1.8k and a 22k toghether(total 23.8k, i cannot use a 50K trimmer settet @23.8k?) to the soldering points as show in picture, without removing the existing resistor, right?

hipro: Can you give us some clue on how the AGP/PCI lock works on this board over 300FSB?

I didn't have time to test it "deep".........But with a few tests I was able to accive about 370MHz out of it at 3:2 .....

S-Sandra got crazy with the x14 multi and shows the Rams at 266MHz BUT they are at 256MHz........NOT bad for 5:4 and ABIT.....!...... ;) :)

BEST is that we can bench(with LN2 or Cascades) at about 5600 to 6000MHz with NO PROBLEM at 5:4....EVEN with a P4 3.6GHz with the x18 multi.....ALSO I encode NO problem over the 300MHz limit......At 320MHz and 5:4 I didn't have any lock-ups as for the AGP/PCI......NO problem at all...... :D


SETTINGS for the 5:4 with BH-5 , BH-6 Ramchips.......

Vdimm = 3.35V
Vchip = 1.52V
Vfsb = 1.31V
VAGP = 1.95V(on choke - photo - )
N/B Strap CPU AS = PSB800
DRAM Ratio (CPU: DRAM) = 5:4
AGP/PCI = 76/38
PCI Latency = 64
Latencies(Cas) = 2 - 5 - 2 - 2
Delay Prior to Thermal = 32min
Game Accelerator = Street Racer
Refresh Cycle Time = Enhanced
Read Delay (tRD) = 6 clocks(for up to 320MHz) or 5 clocks(for up to 305MHz)
Read Delay Adjust (tRDA) = Enable
Command Per Clock (CPC) = Disable

Observations : AS8 doesn't really "like" the PAT = Enable and the CPC = Enable.....ONLY for lower frequencies ;)

For OVER 330MHz you may have to do the Vchip mod and trim it at 1.8 - 1.9Volts.....@ 370MHz+ ;)

IF you solder them in PARALLEL then here how it goes : 1.8K * 22K = 39.6K - and 1.8K + 22K = 23.8K........Now we get this : 39.6K / 23.8K = 1.6638KOhms...... ;)

When I bench with my friends cards , I always have the VAGP at 1.98Volts nomatter what VGA is it.......I've moded and benched with over 8 - 10 X800pro - X800 PE and I encode no problem at all.......But we have to be carefull about that..... ;)

Haven't tested more than 323MHz at 5:4 YET.......Up to there it was OK......OR you have to bench at 3:2..... ;)

NO - no - and NO again.......This is SERIES soldering.........In PARALLEL - the one with the other twisted together..........OR use a trimmer of 2KOhms 25 turns - like the ones into the photos - and trim it as you wish....... :D

no, a 2KOhm trimmer regulated @1.6KOhm....hipro told that the best was 1.662 if i'm rigth, or not hipro?

so ya'll are just turning the knob to adjust the resistance and measuring it with a multimeter until it gets to 1.66X??

Why not get a 1.65k directly?
Just because it's not in the standard series of resistors, they're not that hard to find.

Be sure to check resistance on the VR before you solder it to the board, it would also be a good idea to write down which way to turn it for higher or lower resistance.

There are resistors of 1% accuracy of - let's say - 1.83KOhms or 1.64KOhms , real accurate BUT hard to find them in stores......You can soldrer just a 1.8KOhms resistor for the Vdroop and you will be OK.........You'll encode about 0.01V - 0.015V droop and only at full load.....Not bad......Although soldering a trimmer of 2KOhms you can adjust it for accuracy...... ;)

I'm from Sweden, and they hae 1.65k in a local store.
I'm afraid I can't help if you're not living in Sweden.

As Hipro is saying, a 2k VR would be the second best thing to
go with. One additional alternative would be using two 3.3k resistors
in parallell, which equals to 1.65k. These should be easy to find as
they're a part of the standard series of resistances.

Remember, if you're unsure about this resistances, and how to meassure
them my advice is to go to a electronics repair shop or such. The soldering
points might look large and nice in the pictures, but ones you look at the real
board, they're really tiny!
This could definitly destroy both your mobo and/or CPU.

he could practice on "dead" boards. :) with some practice most mods arent that hard. :)

i have a big box full of death boards, when i must do a mod i search for a similar situation on one of these, and i try, if i don't find difficulties i will proceed to mod the good board!

Thats what I have been doing, as soldering is not the prob. However messuring the VR is as I have never heard of that being done. Only thing I would really need to know is where to point the tips of the meter so I can messure it.

you need a multimeter setted as ohmmeter...

The meter I have does Ohms, V DC, V AC and A DC amps.

ohms guy, but if you don't know how to use and you have neve done a mod befor is better that you realize what you are going to do...

it's not the fact, to learn to do mods you need practice, as i and jan said, try and learn on dead bords, and open a 3d specific to learn how to use multimeter and all other things...we cannot teach you from our homes :P

Ok to learn to do a mod you use a dead board. Ok fine but how would you get say a volt reading, ohm reading and such off of one. After all it shouldn't be to hard to tell someone how to check the VR or give them a link on how to do it :p:

In most cases you will connect a wire to the middle leg and one of the outer. Use your mulitmeter as Ohm-meter and measure between the pins so it reads max for that VR.
now solder it in.
Set the meter at a voltage range (the lowest possible will give the best accuracy) and point the red wire to the voltage measuring point with the black one to ground. That could be case, screw og somewhere else. I prefer black wires in molexes as you can leave it there and think no more about that one ;)

Some U P D A T E S in case that someone want to achieve more O/Cability............... ;)

You HAVE to REPLACE the Northbridge heatsink in case you feed your mobo with more VAGP and Vchip...........You can leave it as is BUT you'll gain MUCH more if you replace it............ ;)

I've replased it a few days ago and I 've pulled out 278MHz at 1:1 CPU:Ram with the BH-6 chips..........With the default heatsink I could pull out up to 271MHz CPU:Ram with my BH-6s............ ;)

I replaced it with a Swiftech heatsink and a DELTA 4 x 4cm fan 10000 rpms........ :D

The Swifty HAD to be changed a bit though so as to fit onto this mobo..........and here's how...........

After that I managed to bench 3D from 263MHz at 1:1 that I was before TO 268MHz 1:1 with the BH-6 now........... ;)

Only a little bit......With the IC7 I gained about 2 - 3 MHz more at 1:1 and same at 3:2 cooling the 875 chip with a Vapo-chill........ ;)

ah, my card blocks at 290 without mods(5:4), with agp 66/33, putting agp at 76/38 i can go a little bit highter???

I haven't tested a 6xx series yet .........

Try to put into bios at 5:4 the N/B Strap CPU as : PS800 and the CPC = Disable to see how it does...... ;)

already done this, i have modded mine yesterday evening :toast:

now, to reach hight fsb frequencies what are best settings??? my 3.0 reach 290*15@ 1,5v under my mach gt 404/410, but above this it doesn't bench even with 1,7 :(

You know, I really wish I had a clue how to mod. Nonetheless, that looks amazing.

Over 350fsb off a 865 chipset, wow. Puts most 925's to shame. What I don't understand is why mobo manufacturers don't just make the boards this way, instead of us having to mod them ;)

So what was this mobo's maximum fsb unmodded?

what I have here are 6 Rubycon 2200 uf 6.3v T0332 capacitors here.

will these work for the back capacitor mod?

also, what does the Vfsb mod do??

will the back capacitor mod work, without the 100nF to 1uF NO POLAR SMD caps ??cause theres no chance on earth of getting those in alaska.

Guys i have a strange problem.

With 540 on my as8 i had max screenshot 345fsb.
with 640 i can run at 299fsb 1mb super pi(27sec) but at 300fsb it freezes the whole setup when i am switching the fsb from guru. I tried this too --> http://www.cpuid.org/download/eist.zip with 14,15 multi and it did the same thing. I put 3:2 my memory too but nothing. I have done vdroop + vagp but i didn't gain anything except the stable vcore. Today i will do vchip and vfsb. any ideas for my problem? I dont think that my cpu has a limit at 300 fsb.

yes it was without vchip. Under my cascade of course.

Now i did the the vchip (it is little diffiult) and i trimm it to 1,8v , and i flashed with new bios but i again i hit a wall with my 640. At 299 i can run superpi 1mb at 300 it freezes....

Any ideas...

i think is a problem of compatibility with 6xx...try the old bios???

btw, the new bios is the 1.6???

Just as a heads up:
Game accelerator on *any* setting other than Auto hangs at POST
Anything higher than Enhanced on the Refresh Cycle time hangs at post
Everything is bascially on auto with the BIOS (RAM) settings

Anyone have any bright ideas before I scream at Abit on the phone today? <demanding they update their gdamn BIOS> :upset:

Just got done talking to the guys on DFI street. Its most definatly a BIOS issue. Newest one fixes this very problem :upset: God damnit Abit make me my :banana::banana::banana::banana:ing BIOS!

Two things you could try.

1. Under advanced chipset settings use: Auto-Auto-Auto-Disabled-Disabled
and then use N/B Strap 667 instead of 800. See if it posts and try to run Sandra again. This is the hidden way of enabling PAT on IS7 at least. Be advised: previous versions of CPUz recognised the mem dividers incorrectly.

2. On my IC7, Auto is very close to max performance, but not on the IS7 (which has the same chipset as AS8). Here you have a link to some previous testing done by me, with settings you can try:

There's a lot of more memory related things in that thread regarding PAT if you're interested.

Also, search for as8 by hipro and you'll find thread where he has written what kind of settings he's used to reach insane FSB speeds on the AS8.
