Welcome! :toast:
[pretend to be a n00b=on]Jeff... what if I'm new to XS and I have a question...  :D
I can't post until I have an account :O
Who, and how, can I contact for help while I'm waiting for my account to be activated???[/n00b mode]
:D Easy sir! You can e-mail me... SRodman at mchsi dot com!
I'll be sure to help you out ASAP! :D
sticky?
Ewwwwwww! It's sticky! :D
Reason I started this thread is because I re-worded the original D²OL thread...

Your one-stop page for installing D²OL ;)

Nice!! he he he
Always nice to see something that you took on as your pet project get some attention! Thanks! :D
Well you did a fantastic job... very professionally done in my opinion. It deserves all the recognition it gets. :toast:
Okay...i set up the client on a laptop and entered the same email address used for my other nodes. But it's not showing up in the list. I could have sworn that it was there earlier today and that I had actually added it but I've checked my stats throughout the day and it still says 2 nodes, not 3 ;-0
grrrr...any suggestions? reinstall?
the MIA node is 113520
thx.

If not...
Did you install it as a service? If so... stop the service and kill all of the processes associated with it in the task manager (D2OL.exe, DockWin.exe or WinGrid.exe) then start it with the D2OL.exe in the install folder... That will put it in the task bar so you can see it temp. Right click on it and select "status". In the window that pops up select the Statistics button at the top... check the email address that is listed...
If it's wrong then just delete the node.prp file in the ...D2OL\res folder. Start it again with the D2OL.exe file so it runs in the taskbar. When it comes up if will ask you to register it again. :D
rodzilla, if your waking up as I go to bed thats just sad... hehe
Yea... they make me work :( Go sleep it off man!
What exactly is DSpy? Does it increase/decrease amount of candidates or something like that. I know it has something to do with Java.
I believe I am http://home.earthlink.net/~adventurevision/hot.gif
It's a replacement for the resource hungry GUI that D2OL uses.Quote:

Does anyone here run D2OL on a mac?? I have an older 9600 (I have so many old computers its insane!!) that currently is just used for homework. Does anyone know if its that much different or if its just the same??
I'm of no help with Macs... except Big Macs. ;) (yeah... it's sad since that really is my sense of humor trying to come out... ) ;)
Do the comp have to be connected to internet all the time when it folds? or can I just plugin internet like once a week for sending stats?
You can set your client to offline mode and if you want to upload you can just turn it to online mode. Right-mouse button on the client icon and declick online.Quote:

You will get results for the whole week. Make sure you put your Candidate queue size big enough (2000) in properties if you do this.Quote:

Yep, all your nodes show up in your stats. I have 27 nodes and they all add to my total. (only half of those are active btw... I wish all 27 were producing! )
I had to have my D2OL proggies off for some time today, about 3 hours while I was checking the harddrivers for errors and stuff, but now it's up running.
can you combine nodes? I have 2 nodes, and ones producing around 17 candidates a day(still setting up router, only on a P3 800) and one producing .73 candidates. Can I combine them, or no?
Does anyone know if there is a script/program like D2OL Daddy but with changable priorites?
Erm.. best explain that a bit clearer!
Im looking to change the priority of Dockwin.exe & Gridwin.exe from low to BelowNormal every time they open themselves..
Because this is my only PC i cant fully dedicate it to "conforming" cos i have to use it all the time as well, the problem i have is that everytime i use the PC it kicks them two out the way and they stop doing anything which is a right pain in the a**e cos i want to do as much as possible for the team (and the cause of course:D)!!! It was easy to set up with F@H but D2OL is very limited like that.
Anyone got any better suggestions than doing it via TM every 5mins? :stick:
[Edit] Just found this funky program, not had a play with it yet as im waaay too tired!
Looks like what im after, it could help us all out with rackin up them points too! :toast:
[Edit 2] Nope... It isn't a permanant solution... Still stuck... Any ideas?
I would just like your views on "Sneaker Netting" and running your client's on someone elses computer .
thanks
Peter :)
Officially... don't do it without permission.
Privately... If you can handle loosing your job or getting kicked out of school(or whatever will happen if you get caught), then go for it. ;) You can set the client to cache 2000 units which would probably be good for a week or two. I've never tried it with D2OL so I'm not sure what kind of storage you're looking at for 2000 units.
Seriously though... only do something like this if you can handle the consequences of getting caught. People have had thier lives ruined because of this sort of thing.
Thanks Jeff for your views. Actually I should have enlarged on what I was asking . I know the consequences , but for me I dont like people doing it . Running a D20L client to help humanity is a great thing , and it should be encouraged . For me I also like to be a bit competitive and when someone comes along and gets a mile in front of you because he or she has put a client on someone else's computer to get more score , and then gets in front , That was what I wanted to know of peoples views on in this forum . :)
Thanks
Peter :)
Ahh... I see.
Personally... I have it installed on two rigs that I made for people and they don't mind having it there at all. In the past I've installed DC programs(SETI@Home in particular) on people's rigs without asking first. I did it because of the competitive aspect without really thinking it through. Not too long after I did it, I decided not to do it like that anymore. Back in the SETI days, for me that was about 2 or 3 years ago now, not many people would agree to have that program run on thier computers. Now that I'm into the more "medical" projects... I've found that almost everyone will say "sure, you can put that on my system as long as it doesn't hurt anything".
I don't see anything wrong with networking yourself to be honest. If you fix and/or build computers for people and they don't mind helping you out, go for it. I think most of us here could volunteer our services for friends, family, and relatives and get a little kick in our output.
BTW, welcome to the forums! :toast: ;)
On sneaker Netting... It's a good thing if you have dial-up or no physical network.Quote:

Just to be clear (because of the way you asked the question... I don't want anyone to think sneaker netting is a bad thing) When someone is sneaker netting they are downloading a reserve of Candidates to crunch offline. So instead of uploading results every 6 hours... you will upload all of your results when you choose to. There is nothing wrong with it...
On installing it on other people’s hardware... It really all depends on how you do it. If you ask and they agree then by all means please do! It helps the team, your stats, and the project as a whole!
If you don't ask (or borging as we like to call it) then you have stepped into the realm of darkness! I would advise against it.
Hmmmmmmmm... I would advise against running D2OL at a higher priority...Quote:

A very important aspect of D2OL is that you can run it on a systems without affecting your performance. No one would use it if it slowed down your computer.
I am hooking up a few more computers, and I was just wondering if I should just use the same node or have a bunch of different ones.
That is totally up to you. If you want to add more just use the same e-mail address to register the new ones, log in here http://app.d2ol.com/memberServices/memberLogin.jsp , and at the bottom you will see a button for "Add node" It will bring up a window with nodes you can add. :D
I think you can, and in my case do, lose work running multiple computers on the same node ID. Over at the D2OL boards it was mentioned that if the different computers are all trying to upload/download at the same time... the work will be valid scientifically but you may lose some credit.
In my case I have 3 dual Xeons running seperate nodes on each of 4 instances of D2OL and I have 1 dual Xeon running the same node ID for all 4 instances of D2OL. This last machine is always at least 5 candidates behind the other 3 Xeon rigs every update. For the life of me I have not been able to figure it out.
After reading the D2OL boards and seeing this mentioned... I think I found out why. I'm going to be converting the one rig over to 4 seperate node IDs this weekend so I'll have some hard evidence either way next week.
Hi!
I've just downloaded the installer, registered the node, and joined the team. How do I now my progress on the assigned work?
You can check your stats here
http://stats.free-dc.org/new/projpage.php?proj=d2ol
here
http://tn-d2ol-stats.homeip.net/allteams
here
http://app.d2ol.com/stats/topTeams.jsp
or here!
http://d2ol.tastats.com/main.php
Or you could also use DSpy to keep track of them in real time.
http://homepages.opencominc.com/smichael/DSpy.exe
Exactly what I was looking for. Thanks!
Question: I'm new and didn't install it yet. But I'm planning to install Rodzilla's AgentInstallers. But what's the difference between Community and Personal installers?
I'd also like to know how you register and what are nodes? and does it support Linux?
Thx.
Community installers are for anyone to use who want to contribute to the team under the Community account "XtremeSystems_Community"Quote:

To register you need to install the Agent, get your node number, and go here http://app.d2ol.com/memberServices/createMember.jsp
My installers do not support Linux... They are Windows only.
The Official D2OL downloads page has an installer for Linux
http://www.d2ol.com/dOL/download_instructions.html
Under the personal installer, can I still set up my personal one and help XS?
EDIT: When I install it, is it the same as the original and ask for the email address?
It's not the "same" as the original... the installer creates it as a service and is all setup for Max output and other preferred settings. It also installs D2OL Daddy.Quote:

The personal installers are not registered so you can create a node under your own account. (Which is why it ask for an e-mail address)
hi :)
i finished my 2nd node so i wanna crunch with it under the same account.
but what shall i do?
ive installed the standard client on my workstation/maincomputer. (sig)
operating under the "socke" account ;)
what shall i do that my 2nd node operates under the "socke" account :) ?
thx
Log in here http://app.d2ol.com/memberServices/memberLogin.jsp and click add node... you should see any nodes you have registered.

And should i create a node under my account so that two PC's can both do work and get credit?
What's the XS team called?
Another Question? I did a search and didn't come up with anything. My question is...did anyone figure out if bandwidth was better for d2ol or pure mhz?
Thanks,
Whit...
Yes... after you create a node with the D2OL installer you need to create an account. After you make the account you will be able to add the nodes that you have created.Quote:

Apparently, I can't download the One-shot Installer. Is there any difference between that and the "original" installers?
I downloaded one just fine... check your url...

Thx for all the help. I finally downloaded it and am currently in the team.
Happy to be of Service! Drop us a line if you need anything else!
sry if this has already been asked but when i reboot my machine do i loose any work that isnt finished? cuz i had finished like 3 (lol) out of the 200 tasks i downloaded then i rebooted and it downloaded 3 more tasks to send it back up to 200 tasks completed went down to 0. did i loose those 3 tasks?
sry for the noobness :toast:
Nope, completed candidates are uploaded every 6hrs or upon a re-boot. The only work that gets lost is conformers. There are 20 conformers in a candidate and if you are on the 18th conformer when you reboot... you loose all 18. It's not a terribly big thing if you are running anything quicker than a 1.5GHz CPU... but if you are running a 500MHz CPU... you may want to wait for those two conformers to finish. ;)
(and don't worry... we were all D2OL noobs in the beginning!) :toast:
awsome! and i didnt quite get how it all fit together "conformers" "canidates" and the like n now i do! thanks alot :toast:
oh sry another question lol i have this loaded on my gaming rig and its the its rodzillas version so it runs as a service. im not quite sure but i think i see a slight slowdown in half life 2 what do i have to do to pause or stop the proggy while i game? in the services manager theres 2 services that i can pause X-d2ol and ddaddy. but in the task manager theres dockwin, d2ol and d2ol daddy can i just end task on all of these and not loose all my canidates that havent been uploaded? also if i shutdown a comp and i dont connect to the internet will it save my finished canidates to the HD, since they wont get a chance to upload on shutdown.
this is the last one i promise!
Thanks :toast:
Well. I dunno about this. But I'm planning to use D2OL on both my comp. Do I first run the Install on the other comp., register it, then click add node in my account? Or how do i add it?
yeah if u went to the site and registered with an email then when u load the client type that email in when it asks u and goto the site and log in u will then see a list of nodes that can be added (in this case just one the one u just loaded) hit add node n ur good to go.
You are correct!!! :up:Quote:

If GridWin.exe is running it will not stop until it finishes all 20 Conformers... unless you terminate the task in the task manager.
Every time your Agent finishes 20 conformers it will take the best candidate from that set and save it to your completed work queue... Every 6 hrs they will automatically be uploaded... if you restart the agent they will also be uploaded.
It's perfectly fine to restart without an internet connection... your results will be saved until they are uploaded... ie you hit your 6hr mark and have a network connection.
cool, thanks a ton rodzilla, im all set up n running just have to join the team tomorrow. currently running 4 nodes (only 1 24/7 :( ) but that will soon change with dual xeons on the way
thanks again :toast:

I have a set of these chips... I just need to start buying parts to finish it. Then I'll be making a run at Jeff! And running away from Serlv
sweet, maybe in a couple years ill catch up lol
I've only been at this for 101 days exactly... I registered on 10/10/04. So it’s possible to climb up the stats pretty hard and fast! You just gotta commit to it!
yea you just have to have the computing power!
hmm in that case u may have a lil competition on ur hands :p:Quote:

I could have two, but does anyone know how to install it in Linux?
theres an installer for it on the offical D2OL site. I haven't used it myself, since its too big for me to download (unless its at night) since I have dial up. The site has the instructions so that should help you out.
jjcom
If anybody on the team needs these files on CD, just PM me with your address and I can burn a copy and send it to you free of charge. I have a sleeve of 100 CDROMs that have been sitting here for ages and I've only used about 10 of them. :)Quote:

Yeah. I dunno if i can even get that high. If I leave this comp. on for a long time.... , maybe. And good job so far. Linux is complicated.
lol serlv i dono if ill be able to catch up to u ne time soon, im thinkin with the xeon rig i might be able to hit the top 25 in a couple weeks, but ill need more power to get up there with the big guns. :bows: btw i see u onyl have 3 nodes what u running? 3 xeon rigs?Quote:

How much does a Xeon rig cost? If I could, maybe i'll get one.
150 to 200 for mobo, 112 shipped for 2 x Xeon, bout $30-40 for two HS
plus whatever else you put in it
oh yeah, 60 -100 for beefy psu ( greater than 25 or 30 on 12V ), unless you have one around that meets that grade
lol, good maybe ill still have a chance then :DQuote:

Use DSpy. The whole point to running it as a service is so it's out of the way... and so it starts up when you boot and no one will mess with it.Quote:

Now go to the task manager and stop the Gridwin.exe (or Dockwin.exe) Do it for all of them if you used a multiple node installer (XS_D2OL1, XS_D2OL2 ect.)
Now... with the services stopped and the task stopped... go into the Service Manager and open up the properties for XS_D2OL1.
Go up and click on the Log On tab. Put a checkmark beside "allow service to interact with desktop".
Restart the service. It will now start in the system tray. Now if you need to stop it just close the sys tray icon.
jeez rod is there anything you dont know about this prog?
I still haven't figured out how to make it run on my toaster! :D
I made the installers... so i have to know it...
true, it would be fun if you could make it run on your toaster, i would make an Extreme toaster farm! they are cheaper than any computer worth buying!
hmm i bet u could get it to run on a cell phone. its writen in java so its possible, lol not that i would be able to figure out how to do it
Only the GUI is Java... the engine that does the docking is a windows app... I don't think it will run on a cell.
It will run on an iPaq... or XBox :D
Or a PS2, Gamecube... The possibilities are LIMITLESS!!
yeah, your right, theres Linux installers and Linux can run on an Xbox or gamecube, not sure about the PS2 but I wouldn't be surprised if it does...theres cell phones that run a Linux based OS thing aren't there...:D

1. Ran the community installer on His. Looks like it is working?
How do I tell if it is working well and keep track of what it is doing? (other than helping to keep the house warm this winter :D ).
2. Will repeat #1 on Hers soon, anything special I have to do, so they don't clobber/nullify/confuse each other, and how do I tell?
Thanks MikeE
u can keep track of ur progress when d2ol is installed as a service with this program.
