10K is a pancake now, 15K is more like it ;)
2k5 is very little cpu dependant as the percantage results i posted show. it almost constantly scales with around 75% compared to a single solution. that means a single card that pulls 5600 would pull 10000 if you add another card in sli that is clocked at the same speed.
so if you have a system with a 6800 card that scores 8500 im sure you would get 15K if you add another card with the same clockspeeds to the system. :D
and with nf4 we hopefully get some small performence boosts, 90nm a64s are also slightly faster at the same clockspeed compared to their 130nm parts and oc slightly higher, and the fx55 on 130nm seems to also oc a little higher than the fx53. so 15K is def the next thing everybody will be looking for :D
here, shows pretty nicely how cpu dependant doom3 is and how gpu dependant 2005 is. looks like 2005 is indeed 99% gpu dependant :)

double the power for such a small boost in halo, doom3 is the most gpu intensive game so far so the boost is bigger but other games, including halo youll get around a third more fps for double the gpu power. Most expensive looks like the 6800U and FX55 option but I think a better system for gaming and some benching would be to spend on two 6800GT's ( assuming they do overclock in this setup ) and an AMD 4000+. The saved money can be spent on trying to get two really good sticks of RAM and lots of Kleenex for al lthe exciting times :)

They just need the right drivers to perform just as well as SLI.
Not that you would want to: all of the SLI results coming on 3dmark05 right now are from Nvidia and so issues such as heat, OC-ability, and long term life of the cards themselves ($500 - $1000 investment) are still unresolved.

I wouldnt believe that for more than one reason:
- If you have a 6800 ultra AGP now, another 6800 Ultra is illogical because dual AGP doesnt exist
- An nforce4 mobo upgrade, ddr2 ram and a pcie 6800 ultra will never cost as much as a top of the line X800 XT PE
- Because of the high cost of building SLI technology and supporting it with drivers for such a small segment of the market, ATI will introduce a price cut on its X800s long before Nvidia will be able to make SLI affordable

Its also a fundemental technology issue if Graphics Cards companies just keep introducing newer drivers to get the true 2x performance from dual PCIe instead of enhancing the architecture.
Basically, if ATI cant answer to SLI, they'll have to bring out the R520 sooner than Nvidia's next chip and will also start producing more power efficient and small cores (65nm anyone :p: ) to compete.
All in all, even future consoles wont consider SLI (part of the reason for Xbox 2 ATI linkup) and over the long run, it just isnt feasible to have to upgrade two cards instead of one when they become obsolete.

I still wonder how ATi will hold its own in the high-end enthusiast market if all the cash-laden folks start wanting/getting SLI rigs.
It will be interesting to see how this rivalry unfolds. If ATi has to become the cheap solution (just to compete) it will be a great time for "thrifty" people like me, but I kind of doubt that will happen. ATi is probably working on something that should at least allow them to compete with nVidia's SLI (maybe?).
EDIT: Grayson Carlyle, that's probably a pretty cost-effective solution, but what about the people that want to have the best hardware all the time? Those people, however small a minority they might be, WILL have to replace both cards at once to remain on top.

Its interesting to see that you suggested phase change right off the bat for cooling purposes as 90% of the Vid Card market does not have access to or doesn't have the expertise to use those cooling methods. Most of us just use air - which will be a really big issue with Nvidia catering to greater numbers. I imagine some exotic pre-installed air cooling system will come with manufacturers selling two bundled Nvidia cards in the same box (its inevitable) for $450-500 for the 6600 GTs and $1000 to 1200 for the 6800 Ultra/GTs.
You're very wrong there. ATI cards have always had the ability to run two cards in the same system, just not with the same performance maximization as SLI. I'm actually planning on two X700XTs in my PCIe system :cool: . Its actually the kind of difference between single and dual channel ram - fundementally speaking. Dual channel works at full capacity 1 Gig with maximum memory bandwith while single channel at 1 gig works slower but still runs at whatever default speed both rams are on (be it PC-3200 or PC2-5400).Quote:

Maybe ati can do dual core, if amd can then so can ati. The core would be rectangular with one heatsink/fan with two chips inside. another option is ati go 32 pipes to beat two of nvidia's 16 pipe cards

Perkam, all you're doing is speculating. Stick to the facts. The fact is that nv has SLI. Fact is that ATi has nothing that comes close. Maybe they will later, maybe they won't. Nobody knows that for sure. And certainly not you.
If ATi makes a 32 pipe card, so will nvidia. And they will put that 32 pipe card in SLI again. Result: Nv wins. If ATI makes a 512 pipe card, nv will do the same and put that in SLI. Guess who's keeping the advantage?
They will not make a dual core card because the last time they've tried (rage fury maxx anyone) it sucked so hard ATi won't make that mistake again.
NVidia has been developping SLI for more than 2 years, if ATi starts tomorrow they still have a long way to go. ATi has to do something, and fast, but for now the future is green.
Didn't Nvidia get a big part of their sli technology from 3dfx when they bought them out or w/e happened? Tha'd give them an even bigger boost. I think ATI will do it eventually, they will have to to compete. I don't think it would take them 2 years, but when they do get it out, it won't be close to effecient as nvidia's.
Please remember, that already ATIs R300 and R360 are scalable for multi-chip solutions (e.g. for professional simulator market). So ATI needs not to start from zero.Quote:

yes, the 6800s need two slots for their stock cooler, but for extreme sli cooling thats great as it means the mainboard has to be designed to have 21/2 if not 3 slots room, wich means more than enough froom for a block with tubes on the side.Quote:

and dont forget, you dont need to insulate the block in between both cards to all sides! if the back of the block touches the back odf the lower card thats just fine, you just need a thin layer so it wont short the back of the card, thats all :) so the lower card will even get cooled from both sides :D
and perkam, i have to agree with andy, you sound like an ati fanboy. theres no reason to believe ati has something to compete with sli, yet you are 100% sure they do. thats not objective, thats dreaming.
and yes, newegg has pciE ported 5900s, so? you seem to not even know that not all pciE cards can run in sli! you need an sli interface on the pcb and sli logic with an extra frame buffer inside the gpu! only the 6800 and 6600 series offer this feature. you seem to pretend to be well informed but you actually lack some very low basics of this topic.
and we are treating everybody nice here on xs as long as they are nice to us as well and dont post some weird claims, some of wich are 100% wrong and then criticize people who question their credibility.
Just becuase a card is pci express, does not mean it can run in sli, only the 6800's have that technology built in. There is a place on the card where the bridge chip will go, no other cards have this, if this were true you could just take any x800 or ati card and use nvidia's technology if the drivers supported it. the room between the two cards is limited by the bridge pcb.
if you look at the nf4 sli and the tumwater sli boards you can see that the room between both pciE graphics slots is around 3cm. the cards are stuck in the middle of the graphics slots, so its around 3.5cm between the pcb of both cards.

I dunno, I think you'll beable to put a phase changer on it without having to do anything fancy, but I think they could have designed it better or something. Stock wise I'm saying there's not much room for many of the stock coolers, and they will get bad airflow. Not to mention, sucking up some heat thats coming off the back of the other card.
true, the heat comming from the back of the lower card must be a lot!
the air above the lower card is probably at least 10C hotter than the normal case air, wich is around 30-40C in most cases. so we are talking about 40C+ hot air to "cool" the upper card. i guess its not a coincidence that nvidia launches sli in winter ;) :lol:

3dfx SLI solution had put the 3df cards generations ahead of the competition, as 3dfx was going out of buisness some of the vodoo5 6000's got out and some people ran benchmarks on them they performed just as good as the ati/nvidia cards, save the fact they didnt have the same pixel shaders, did about a year after the release of it. It doesnt matter if ATI knew about Nvidias SLI solution, Nvidia purchased the rights from 3dfx and if ati wanted to have something similar they would have to come up with something 100% different or else get many lawsuits filed against them.

Why does it need an answer? SLI has been around forever and its not really an issue to start with.
Those who want to pair two $300 cards together to beat a $600 card will do so, those who want to run a $600 card and sell it later on for $250-300 then buy a new $600 card that will beat the 2x $300 cards will do so..
Dont get me wrong, I like the idea of SLI, but there really isnt much to argue about..
ATI would have to worry about it, because there will be no way they can be the fastest (single card yes but overall no) if they have nothing to compete with it. If someone wants a complete top of the line system and money is no issue, there wouldn't be a reason to buy an ati card.

It is really TOO HARD for you people to believe that ATI, being just as competitive as Nvidia, to have a response to SLI, which in my view is a desperate attempt to gain 1-2 % more market share compared to the 10% it lost to ATI last year.

As for SLI, time will tell how feasible it remains but keep this in mind - Nvidia is on an architectural path of doom since it might ultimately be shipping SLI II or something utilizing three cards instead of two but using old technology. My concern is with the greater good of the consumer who wants the newest in graphics technology - not more of the same.
A good way of selling out those overstocked Video Cards laying around in inventory. :p:
ok im dont argueing but to clarify nvidias current SLI is NOT the same as SLI made by 3dfx SLI that 3dfx had alternated a line on the screen ot be rendered by each video card. Nvidias new SLI renders differnt parts of the scene with each video card, its all new and revamped we will have to wait for it to get public before we really see what happens
actually thats exactly how the current sli works as per its launch documents - an alternating line for each video card - not very different from 3dfx. Its the only efficient way to run SLI but its also the oldest.
I heard awhile back, maybe a month, not much more, that one card renderd the bottom of the screen and one renderd the top.
And of course if ati releases the r520 nvidia nvidia will release something to compete but thats because nvidia was already working on that, as that is a standard thing to do, be working on your next chipset. Nvidia is making something completely new, well... somewhat new, but you get my point. And I don't think there will be a sli 2 with 3 videocards or something, that just dosn't seem very practical to me. Specially since after awhile it's going to be cpu limited if it keeps at that rate.

If it is not SLi you do not get any performance increase at all , so you obviously thought this was an SLi card.

and 3dfx was going down anyways, the voodoo5 series would have cost at least as much as a geforce2 ultra, but the geforce2 ultra was a lot faster in almost all benches and was released just 6 months after the voodoo5 series should have been released afaik

Im not even concerned that much about being "xtremely" right any more as I am sure I will be wrong about a lot of things during my stay here at Xtreme Systems - but that doesnt mean I will be wrong about everything - which happens to be the attitude of the ppl in this thread.

Perkham, my apologies if it seemed to you that I beat down on some of your statements because you were new, that was not my intention. However we have had people come in here before with both either nvidia or ATI on the brain, they've said things typical of nvnews or rage3d ( which is not bad as such ) but not xtremesystems. Then they have left.
People at xtremesystems tend to like what's fastest, not what the label says. We may have favourites, mine being nvidia, which may make is more combative when someobody turns up saying things, but only if those things are avoiding reality, and reality to us is speed.

So I bought an Ati 9800 Pro recently for gaming, macci moves from Intel to AMD and back again, as does OPPAINTER etc etc.
Saaya, others and I were being maybe a bit noisy because we are excited by SLi and what it will take it to perform even faster, it does not matter if it is ATI or nvidia as it offers a big jump.
Big jumps in performance are fairly wide spread and much to be admired, I can think of Intel 875./P4, Ati 9700 onwards, AMD64, cascades for the cooling and now the latest Ati XT800 and to some extent the 6800 series. So we like these things when they appear.
So when Sli is being talked about not to have one good word about it and use dubious statements to try and stick to your ground was what got my goat ( as we say in England, hope that translates well ).
Having said all that, if you wish to stick around ( and not totally hacked off with XS people like me ) then I offer my hand out and say more than happy to start off again on the right foot.
If you need any tips on overclocking nvidia just ask ( joke :) )

I myself believe that, perhaps, my bias (yes I know I have one) towards ATI was blinding me to the techonological marvel that SLI has a potential of becoming (there I said it) and that Nvidia may have gotten ATI by surprise. Certainly, I was wrong to have thought I could force my beliefs onto others in the above manner. But then again, you guys came on me like the entire Newyork Giants Defensive line - to tell you the truth , I was a bit out of my league because of that.

When the 480 comes out.... Nvidia will release something as well.. and then it will have an option for SLI. Unless ATI comes out with something that will always be twice the performance of Nvidia.... then I can understand why perkam would think SLI is illogical. But ATI has never released anything that is twice the performance of an equally marketed Nvidia card... so SLI is indeed a welcome innovation IMO. It gives Nvidia users the ability to run state of the art of technology equal to any competitors out there... while also giving the ability to run that same technology twice as better. (I don't care about buying one now.. and then when my card is obsolete... buy another one. It's called trading.. and I do it all the time... although it can drain your wallet).
As far as I know ATI do not see SLI as a route for desktop machines
you will certainly see dual core make its ways but SLI will in the main
stay as Nvidia and they spent 2.5 years on the drivers anyway.
I'd be surprised if ATI were to go down the SLI route i'd think the pro's of going dual core would be more to ATI benefit as its sounds like the work to bring that to fruitation is well under way.
this sli seems like extreme edition of intel if you cant be the #1 then do something unexpectable and cost lot at least you can be #1 this is what i think

Lets be careful when we say 2x the performance because not only is it exactly so (more like 1.7 - yes im being picky about this because you're paying Exactly 2x the price :eek: )...It also doesnt mean twice the techonological innovation - as it used to. For example, the X800 Pro/6800 GT is twice the performance of the 9800 XT/5900 Ultra -> Thats makes sense to me as twice the performance because it also means a new generation of cards using brand new technology (Gddr3, etc).Quote:

I've always been biased towards ATI, ever since the whole NV3x and R3xx series were in competition. You get used to accepting that one company is just plain better than the other after 2.5 years of it. The new cards have leveled the field, yet I still feel obligated to side with ATI.
SLI, for all I'm concerned, could remain an nVidia only thing forever and it wouldn't matter. The only people that will use SLI are people doing heavy duty graphics rendering like computers processing weather satellite information and such, or the high end benchmarkers who could care less that they pay 2x and only get 1.7x performance. To me, even if ATI had the same thing, where you could get 1.7x performance, it wouldn't matter. 1 $500 video card is surely fast enough for all the games, and unless you're trying to set 3dmark WRs, there's no point in owning SLI anyhow.
I can understand how it gets under people's skin all the back and forth comparing single cards, but SLI is a luxury akin to phase change cooling, one luxury that a huge percentage of the population doesn't have, can't afford and doesn't think is remotely necessary. But, for those that throw money down on dual cascades, etc. etc., let them have their fun. I'm glad someone has something like SLI working, just to further open the envelope of technology, and push the limits of computing. Eventually stuff like SLI will be a standard, and it has to begin somewhere. :)
So for the fanboys, put aside your bias, because it's not like you're going to use SLI anyways, even if you are an nVidia fan. ;)
I can understand how it is ridiculous for high end cards, but I think SLI's biggest advantage is in the mainstream sector. When you got a slower card and the newest game needs a bit more power to run at quality settings, then you just run out and get another one of your card at a much cheaper price then your first one (cause this is a while after you got your first card). Then you get the raw performance of a more expensive model for less $$. Sure for high end cards it's crazy expenisve, but for those with, say a 6600 standard, it could be very nice indeed, because now you have almost the performance of a 6800GT, and since the purchases aren't at the same time, much less cost.
Now if you're going to buy both card at the same time, then it's crazy unless you're going for WR. But if you've got the money, then SLI is a good thing.

In addition, its not too far off to believe the above because now that SLI IS OUT, both companies will be working harder to try to outgun each other for at least the next 18 months and so ATI has a couple of options but one of desperate ones would be to try to outperform two 6600s/6800s with perhaps a X750XT or X850XT or something with stock maxed out (no OC ability) and huge temperature issues - again that would be a desperate measure if and only if IT HASNT PREPARED for SLI.

Right now a X800XT and those like it preform very similar to the GeForce FX 6800 Ultra. I don't see ATi releasing a X750 and X850 cards since I THINK that ATi already has plans for those model numbers.
O'yeah and Perkam. We all mess up sometimes...once i read a post at 1in the morning and thought that XS was BS...and got a little...angery at who posted..I made sure to appolgise the next day and now no feuds.
perkam, i think you are an ati fanboy, isn't it sorta obvious nvidia is king with sli?...cus otherwise, i have no idea wat the heck your talking about :P
i don't wanna sound rude or anything, anyways, sli is an excellent option to upgrading i think, i mean, take for example if sli was something ati did back in the days of the 9500pro..man that would just rock! imagine how much money you could save...getting two 9500pro...man
course its now, but sli still kicks majorly

Actually, I agree - That WOULD rock but then you could get a 9800 pro with 256-bit interface for 1.5x the price with 1.5x the performance not be prone to the downsides of SLI and its two card burdenQuote:
