Hello hello!

Normally I just throw myself into a project and it works out alright. Yes, I may have to change out a part--or five--once it is finished, but it triples as a learning experience and saves me from building an entirely new box while still quenching my thirst for finding the right components and routing cables and the like.

I honestly have no idea what to call this rig, because there are too many options, but they all rely on paint, and drilling rivets, and everything that I unfortunately do not have time for right now (sigh).

This was the worst part; taking the video cards apart. Well, one of them. Two of the three MCW60's I got from Micro Center look used (WTF). So I only took this one card apart. Man, that TIM would not let go. I thought I forgot a screw, and I was pulling and twisting gently, and then POP:

It's the best! And the height is perfect. It's about an inch below where I can safely lift the computers due to weight and arm-length limitations, and I can easily see the bottom and top without hunching over etc.

Only problem is idk what I'm going to use it for once I finish this computer haha.

Maybe I'll work on that xen/vmware dev/fileserver I keep selling parts out of and replacing and reselling from :shakes:

I am at an impasse with my water blocks for the GTX275s.

I bought three from the Micro Center I work at, and two of them are used.
Mutilated screw heads, dirty as hell; foul and worthless.
I have no idea when we will get new ones.
I would order them somewhere else but saving the 30 dollars or so on price and shipping is ideal.

So for now, I think I will just work on taking better pictures for your enjoyment :)

Basically, there isn't much modding going on to this. The case came with the black interior; there was a chance that it was bare metal! All the WC will be outside (at this point).

Great start, Wezly. Can't wait to see this setup in the Raven. And - about the orientation of the block on the board, all you can do is give it a shot and see how it goes. I've run my GTZ with "incorrect" orientation, and didn't see much change when I corrected it. Not something I'd be overly concerned with unless you aren't happy with your temps.

Temps are.... almost secondary to me...

This supreme doesn't have any reviews that I have found, and the only information on it says that "it shows a 2C improvement over previous models" due to the deeper channels.

So, it's a gamble.

Plus, Swiftech hasn't been sending XT's to Micro Center lately....

I was feeling cheap (despite the Classified and tri-sli XD) and I like the way the ghosts work, figured I'd give them a try.

The red ones are PERFECT with the LED. I was looking at my NB cooler, had a feeling the LED's were the same sizes as the holes in the Supreme, and tore it apart. Darn things were hot glued in; flaked right off! I was incredibly happy with the result.

What do you mean? It's reference design, and as far as I know there's only been one revision of the 275, so it is in fact p897.

If it isn't, then swiftech needs to revise their compatibility list (or I broke something on the cards :/ )

Yeah, I know where the board number is, and unfortunately all of my cards are p897 so your best bet is to contact swiftech and evga (or whoever made the cards, and your most absolute answer (should) come from nVidia if you can ask them) because they should have all the reference schematics (ha, schematics) or at least a physical example card.

Hey, does everyone know what I mean by that little square brackety-thing jawn that's held on by 8 screws around the GPU on nVidia cards?

Do I NEED that? I took it off the first card and now I'm wondering whether it provides some sort of structural or thermal stability.....

As you can see, it straddles the intel integrated backplate due to the recessed area, and the triangle feet jawns are the only things that touche the board. Because they are insulated, they can be flat and touch the board directly.

I picked up an extra at micro center just in case I get another 1366 board. It's perfect.

Micro Center gets shipments on Wednesdays and Fridays, it's an irregular shipment, there's FOUR at the store a state over, but it took them til last week to let me have them ship one in. I asked about it a while ago and they wouldn't do it (AND I WORK THERE). Then, I asked again last week, and now for whatever reason they'll "look into it."

ZIP-ties are trying to keep the tube from flattening. I knew those bends would be tough... oh well. More parts next time.

That dust-off/masking-tape is what I use to make sure that I actually have put the tubes in the right place, and there are no excessive blockages, or large amounts of dust (@_@)

Ok, this is the last single post I will do before there are replies, and I will edit it if I do any work in the next few days, but I do need help.

I have 12 Coolermaster R4's that I need to power. I have a secondary PSU (regular ATX 500W Coolmax) that I will power the pumps and fans from.

I have to do this because all of my fans/rads etc will be external. If someone has a better suggestion of how to power everything, I'm listening.

I do need a good fan controller though, either with 4 or 6 headers to accommodate all those fans, plus maybe one more 200mm for top exhaust. (I'll explain when I put the chimney together).

I guess no one is subscribed, or maybe it's because I produce less results than I ask for of other builds :p:

The question still stands:

I have 12 CoolerMaster R4's that I need to power and control on the radiators. 3 MCR420's. I'm thinking of joining them at a 45 degree angle to make a bit of a curve, stick it in the corner of the "L" on my desk, and exhaust the hot air through the top with a leftover CoolerMaster 200MM fan from my HAF932.


If there are any suggestions, I'd love to hear them :D

Maybe you could buy an adjustable power supply, like a meanwell S-150 that some places carry meant for TECs. It could double as a fan controller too, just turn voltage down.

Since it's not too much power, you could try hooking one of those laptop style power bricks up to a fan controller, but it has to be a 12V one.

When the morning is brighter (it's 3am here, I'm on my laptop next to my bed, fighting sleep) I will take more informative pictures.

I don't know if this will be considered a unit; it's more of a facility with the hardware I have :D

And actually, does anyone know what the amp draw on those fans is at startup compared to running? I'm talking max RPM of course. Easier to plan for the most...

Your fans are low speed, they pull maybe 2.5 amps combined? Probably less. The pumps pull less than 1A each. Hmmm so I suppose you'd need around 100W to be safe for startup or something.

The power supply on sidewinder isn't going to be helpful, because it only goes down to 13.5 :(

I didn't have any real problems with them so far, but I've heard that they crack and to "watch out" when I started this log.

You do have to take your time with them, like any compression fitting, or fitting in general. You could easily strip them in the blocks, whereas you would strip the block and/or the fitting with metal ones.

It's hard to describe...

They're difficult to unscrew sometimes. You may end up unscrewing the base when trying to release the cowl. I'd send you some if I had spares, but I think I need to order more!

I went for looks, they look good, they definitely work, but like anything new, they take some getting-used-to.

Well, I did some work on that pesky stretch of tube that flattened out regardless of how many red zip-ties I put on it. I was thinking of shaping it in hot water, and setting it in ice water. That whole plan involved my hands, and I don't really want to do that to them. Kinda important. Anyway.

I took the long way, and added an almost circular section of tubing. This is only a test, so the final piece will be trimmed a little shorter and wrapped in the tasty red springs.

i remember seeing a guy doing much tighter bends with his tubing by putting a fairly thick rope in the tubing, tying it into a loop, then boiling the tubing with rope in it for a bit, taking it out, letting it cool, then pulling the rope out yielding a tight bend with no kinks. you might want to give that a try to see if it helps your bend radius issues.

Just gotta get some 1/2" nylon rope...

Although, I do like the excessive amount of tubing. I bet it looks like crap though :shakes:

well its very nice, i like very much the curve of the tubing but it need some red antikink coils to match the other tubing parts.

I have a suggestion, I hope you can consider it, no commitment required. I must be honest, I'm not digging the tube routing right now (and deep down I think you might agree), please don't take that as harsh criticism. This is a very unique project and I have some ideas on aesthetics that might help. :)

2 of these (but they're expensive, bulky, and I have no experience with them): LINK

And some more barbs/clamps, etc.

Trust me, I thought of the koolance manifolds, many, many, manymanymanymanymany times.

I was told that parallel flow was not ideal with regards to pressure and flow and flowrate. Thinking about it, it makes sense that pressure and flow rate would be uneven between the three blocks, but thinking about it again, wouldn't the flow degrade in that scenario as well?

Whatever, it is something I must overcome. It would be a shame to waste all that tubing though. :[

I like the t-line and spacers :up:

The rads will be external, because there's no way I can put three MCR420s inside that case. I've seen one, and that took out the whole floor and that was too much hacking and such for my time and resource constraints.

I need to devise how to put them on 45 degree angles, power the fans, and attach the top exhaust fan. Also, I have been struggling with how to string them together with the increased radius that a single piece of tubing will need.

I originally liked the koolance manifolds, but did not want that many more points of failure. Six leak spots on the cards is better than 12 or more.

Since one other person thinks it's a good solution, and I trust them, I will look into that again more thoroughly in the morning.

Well, I was going to charge my camera, and post an update after I swapped out that clear tubing for some black with red coils, but then I "did a stupid."

I coiled the tube, secured the ends to the coil with masking tape, and dunked it in my hot distilled water. Realizing that the hot water would remove the adhesive and put it into the water and thereby the submerged tube, it would ultimately end up in my loop.

*sigh*

I will get more distilled water tomorrow, and look into a better container to heat the water in so I do not do that anymore.

I also need some 1" nylon rope so I can shape the bends properly. Sorry, Kibbler, as much as I like that idea, the money just isn't here, nor is the desire to have that many leaks to worry about.

Maybe another time, or when I do a rebuild :p:

The reason the money isn't here is because I just got 4 2tb Hitachi's from newegg for 139.99 each with free shipping. Weekend special = win.

I am still tempted to put them in this rig, but I know I need them for an external backup server. I should have gotten more so I had something to store VMs on. Maybe some 500's.

Oh well, sorry for everyone who is subscribed. I feel like this is a bait'n'switch. :(

That's why I went with tri-sli. If I do it now with 275's, decent, now former-middle-of-the-road cards, I can satisfy that urge to have way too many video cards, but not break the bank, and still have good performance.

So, Kibbler sparked my interest in those koolance manifolds again, so I bought some!

Those quick-disconnects are interesting.

I need to design a plate to cover the holes in the case, or drill new ones. haven't decided yet. I also need to find a backplate for the manifolds to attach to the top of the case.

Kibbler, I didn't think of suspending the one from the top, so credit to you for what is still to come.

Pressure valve is for brewing, not the computer :D

I just can't help thinking that the pressure will be greatest at the back, and therefor the flow will be less on the first card (the hottest).

I guess this is to late to respond to your project here, btw your build is coming along very nicely. But to other news I have just received a diagram from Bitspower about creating extensions for the MCW60s to allow easier tubing hook ups similar to how FC blocks are.

I have attached the pdf file to this post, hopefully this should help you out a bit or at least give you another idea. I am doing this to my 4870's in crossfire. I will have it completed this weekend. I can PM you pics if your interested in what the result may look like.

To me, that's a bit much. I am just worried about a new leak every time I introduce a new fitting or connector into my loop. That was the original reason I ditched the Koolance manifolds, despite the fact that they were the perfect solution.

I also considered a setup like the one you chose, and then I passed out when I put a similar list of parts in a shopping cart >.>

haha yeah, sadly it ran me about $120 in just fittings for both my cards >.<

But I figure hey the MCW60 will work on any new generation card coming out and its a one time fee for the fittings. sure beats spending $150 every card for a new FC block just for easier access for tubing when running multiple cards.

Really looking forward to seeing how this works, Wezly. Those Koolance splitters baffle my mind (I know, doesn't take much), so hope you explain how the work and how you set them up.

If im not mistaken those r the new acrylic sli connectors, which i dont recommend using as per your diagram. They're friction fit so theres nothing stopping them from loosening in that setup, unlike if theyre sandwiched between 2 blocks like theyre meant to be used. Also they would be more subject to gravity which in some cases could cause an uneven seal at the internal oring. Long story short dont think its a good idea, sorry.

Yeah I see what you mean. I got the diagram from Bitspower and figured since they are big name for special fittings for PC water cooling that they would have tested the idea and it would be safe. Unfortuantely I've already ordered the parts :(. I will test it before installing and see how it works out. If it doesnt work as planned and has the chance of the acrylic tube slipping and leaking then I will be at a big loss. I'm not sure if I can return those fittings to performance-pcs.. hmm

But Waterlogged had a decent alternative that I cant believe I didnt see it before. The Koolance Dual VID connectors may actually work when pairing with a 90 degree rotary fitting.

Today was a busy day.

Got breakfast with the King, hit Home Depot, got some goodies, took some pictures. That's where the problem is though; photobucket upload seems to be hmm... what's the word... WORTHLESS...

Then my friend and I racked the mead we are making for my 21st birthday. Taste-test says: LIQUID GOLD. We'll get the final result in May, and see if letting it age longer will pay off.

Ordered two EK Supreme HF - Gold's from PPCs because I am a sucker for snazzy stuff. That makes three blocks sitting around waiting for a hot CPU to call "home."

Wezly, my fittings and MCW60s came in yesterday. I went ahead and installed them to my loop. Currently I only have iPhone pics.. :( but its something. Here are the pictures per your request in the forum.

I did leak testing with all the fittings, prior to install. To my suprise it actually works very well. When I was leak testing, I figured since these arcrylic tubes are connected just by O rings there has to be some way of it leaking. So once I have every attached to a MCW60, I hooked up some spare tubing filled up about 2 cups of water and shook the hell out of the thing. Then I felt the fittings, NO leaking at all, every bit of water stayed within the tubing. So then I installed into my loop. Took a bit of time but everything went well. Once again no Leaks :).

If no one has actually worked with the new Dual card connectors from Bitspower the arcrylic tube takes a bit of force to get it stuck into the fitting, you really need to push it into the C03 fitting. Once its in both sides you need to pull with a little strength in order for the tube to pop off. It deffinitely stays between the two C03 fittings. This is more expensive than other alternatives. Such as the Koolance dual vid nozzels, or just using barbs. But it really does look pretty damn cool and shiny :)

Well it goes MCW60>C47>CLTAC(acrylic tube)>C47>C03(Female to Female G 1/4") then to my Single rotary 1/2" barb. For the end you can do it multiple different ways, replacing the rotary barb with other fittings that allow you to attach a fitting to go up and down.

You can flush a rad with tap water?

That's what I read after I dumped a WHOLE BUNCH of vinegar in there haha.

Then I used distilled like a mofo to clean the tap out.

I didn't bother with the second rad because the first was so clean and they came from Micro Center so they are probably the same batch.

So that is how I mounted the manifolds. I cut up a PCI bracket placeholder (after drilling the holes) and put screws through the bottom. You can pretty much see what I'm gonna do there, but if not, you will when it's done!

At this point, I realized that I no longer needed those ugly blue LED fans, but I was NOT going to remount 8 fans... not again.. no no no! So many stripped threads! The horror! That is the only issue I have with Swiftech rads... the mounting holes are like, crooked or not tapped properly, or don't line up in a square....

This is a solution to a problem before it was immediately in front of me. It was almost like I knew what I was doing...
