Phenom II X3-720BE List Capable to running 4 cores or not

Guys, after testing several Phenom II X3-720BE, i found that not all version/batch of this CPU can do 4 cores. So, i started to make this list to share which batch can and which batch can't.

Motherboard using GIGABYTE MA790GP-UD4H

List of batch

* 0904 BPAW ------> can't boot at all when ACC Enable, show F2 in debug card

* 0904 BPMW-------> Boot OK, detect as Phenom X4 and then stop, debug card shown 83 code.

*0849CPAW --------> Boot OK, and act normal like Phenom X4.

Share your experience here !

Benny that would suggest that they appear to know about the issues and have put a stop to it? At least if you go by the date codes.

They already know about it that's why not all Phenom II X3 can do 4 cores. If they don't know about it all Phenom II X3 will be capable to run 4 cores.

Update from 4 pcs BPAW 0904 i tested, only one can works 4 cores :D... no now is not stepping problem.. it's your luck !!!

That would seem to be the right way of doing it for AMD.

Use faulty cores and put some good ones in the mix to spice things up and boost sales. :up:

Same symptom with my first 0904 BPAW batch

Sounds like AMD was disabling crippled/non working cores on some cpus to sell as X3s

this is a very good idea. i'm looking at picking up a x3 720 to unlock the 4th core, and would love it if more people posted their results. also, which motherboards are required for this 'hack?'

got my 720 in yesterday, so far i am unable to load windows with 4th core enabled. its a 0904 CPMW. doesnt seem like an out of this world clocker either, so far i am unable to get it stable over 3.3ghz in windows. it is my first phenom though, so i might be missing something.

this was done on a asus m3a79 - t deluxe

0904bpmw + dfi 790fxb, enable to unlock the 4th core but can't get it prime stable, 3d stable thou.... :(

Try lowering your OC :-P Or raising vcore. The forth core is obviously a weaker core.

have tried that @ 3.0GHz sir, but still once i click on start (prime95 or occt), i'll get a system lock up. i think i already gave up on getting it prime stable. :p:

I ordered in a Phenom II X3 720 from Newegg on 2/26/2009 and got in a 0851 FPMW stepping and can enable ACC on the MSI DKA790GX Platinum motherboard with BIOS v1.6. If I set ACC to 'per core' I can see four cores, but in Windows it only shows up having three... Frustrated!

I tried my Phenom X3 720 on the Asus M4A78T-e and it was a no go no matter what setting.

If I'm remembering correctly the last three numbers in the serial number (or last row on the chip) represent how close to the center of the silicon disc the chip was made, and previously people correlated OCs with how low that number was. I'm wondering if people could post this number in additon to the standard week and batch to see if it correlates with ability to unlock the fourth core. However it's not just as simple as that. When AMD has too many X4s and too few X3s they will simply rebrand X4s as X3s. When all the single core Opteron 939 goodness was going on that's what had happened. AMD had rebranded superior cores they couldn't sell at superior prices as something lower.

There's also another possible outcome. AMD has too few X4s and too many X3s. All they can do there is to try to enhance the manufacturing process, but in the meantime the X3 price drops and/or the X4 price goes up.

And what does all that mean for people who are trying to get a bargain and pay an X3 price and get an X4 product? It's either down to a lot of research about steppings, weeks and other numbers (see the excellent thread Chew* made), or it's just pure luck.

I'm not sure what you were trying to get at, I think most of us knew that there is only two possibilities (and its probably a combination of these possibilities) one is AMD is binning chips to increase profits (ie all cores are good, but to have a diverse product lineup they disable some of the quad cores), and the other is that the yield of quad cores is weak and many have a defunct core and are sold as tri-cores, the question is what is going to correlate with success when unlocking cores which is what I was trying to get at, and I only know of three possible indicators - the week the chip was made, the stepping and those last three numbers, so far people have been posting the week and batch numbers but not the last three numbers.

can i ask a favor from all 0904bpmw users - to do a prime test with 8-4096k & w/o run fft in place? i'll get system lock up rite away after i click d start button but i can survive prime test with 8-512k, run fft in place (usually known as small fft a.k.a cpu test) bout 40 mins with mine. thanks in advance. :up:

I've tried two 0904BPMW and one 0904CPCW. They all lock up my system immediately when I tried to run OCCT.:shrug:

it's becoz that's a blend test i supposed. try to run p95 w/ 8-512k, run fft in place then i'm pretty sure u can last for sometimes. :)

But then my system is not really stable. I don't want some rigged test that will give me a fake result. I want blind test for my system stability.:yepp:

You see my sig below. This system setup is OCCT, Linkpak and Prime 95 torture test stable for 24 hours, and I expect the same from AMD.

well, if stability is d main concern, d 4th core shouldn't be unlocked. take it as it is - tri-core. one will appreciate d oc offered by phII more if he/she was with agena b4. :D

Turn down the Multi to 5 or 6 and then test again. If the same error occurs, it's probably defect.

The disabled core can be any of the four. It could be any of the core designations in Task Manager eg. ("CPU 0/1/2/3") once it is enabled.

i think one of d 4 cores need to be set diff value of acc. :)

what i'll do is set acc 0% to all core, prime (small fft test) w/ stock clock & voltage by runnin 4 instances of orthos (w/ each instance assigned to one particular cpu) or i need to run only one instance of orthos only??? d crippled core would be d one which fail d test. :yepp:

Since you are interested in finding what core, if any, is unstable you, of course, need to run 4 stress test threads each with affinity to a single core. The one that (likely) fails is the crippled core, this core number is the same as in bios, as long as your bios counts them as 0, 1, 2 and 3.

The thing I don't get is why do you even care about the number of the crippled core?

ok, just found out my core 1 is actually d crippled core. no matter what value i set in acc didn't help. :shakes:

now almost all asus boards have a modded bios to unlock the 4th core. this works with any cpu batch or not?

No, there aren't much batches, which work fine. I know only the Batch EPMW and the Batch CPAW, all other batches I heard about don't work

GIGABYTE F3O is more old than official F3, so you put older BIOS version actually.

Folks, I've got my 720BE and a MSI DKA790GX board today. (can't wait to finish @ work already :D)

My question is, what can happen if the 4th core fails to unlock?
Can I revert back to only 3 cores and continue from where I left off? :)

Sounds like its possible, though I feel like I've read somewhere that I may end up with a crippled/non-functional CPU, is that right?

dunno, but it seems strange...if you try to activate 4th core through acc in bios settings and it fails, i think cpu should run as a x3 normally ;)

I've had no problem reverting back to 3 core, just disable ACC and re-boot. The bios may notify you that the 'CPU has changed', just accept the change and off you go. Worst case, clear CMOS. In my experience and from all I've read the switch to 4 core is in no way permanent :)

I found that i have 4 core even if I put ACC on Auto or Disabled.:yepp:
The only problem I have is that I can not see temperature independently on each core and Overdriver does not recognize my CPU.

I'm having an issue with my unlocked 720BE on GA-MA790GP-UD4H.
It's been Prime95-64bit and OCCT stable at 3.6ghz (15x240), but I'm getting sound corruption under Vista 32 and 64 with both SB X-Fi and Realtek HD. With SB X-Fi, I don't hear sound 95% of time, but with Realtek, I do have sound, but randomly corrupted. Also, display seemed slightly corrupted under Vista 32. I have the latest Forceware driver install from nVidia.
I've tried all sorts of settings in the Bios, running FSB at defalut 200mhz, lowering NB and HT to default, and increasing voltage to CPU NB vid, SB and NB voltage.
If I don't unlock the 4th core, then everything is fine. Any thoughts?

I think your fourth core is producing strang things. If all works fine with three cores, it must be the fourth core.

Have you also tested prime Large FFTs? Many X3 @ x4 work fine with small FFTs, but they don't succed in Large FFTs.

So, after i activated the core 4, I was very happy, I made some money economy. Now require to processor to be stable in 3.6 GHz would be too much. Looks good sense to use in 3.4 GHz with default voltage+0.005V.:up:

I have activated the 4th core using DFI JR 790GX board. The only issue is that lastest official BIOS will not work, have to flash to lastest beta BIOS to get the 4th core up.

Running 3.4GHz at 1.35V.

My CPU's batch is 0851 FPAW.
Otherwise seems to be a nice clocker, just not with the boxed cooler eehh.

0904BPAW on M4A78T-E, sometimes it will post with 4th core, most of the times it will not, so far it's only appeared twice to me and unable to prime

3.2Ghz 1.344v, stock volts -w- stock aluminum cooler. (Not much of an o/c for this site, I know :D

It works whether I install Vista with the 4th core unlocked, or unlock it after. I hear some folks cannot get the 4th core to appear in Task Manager even though it shows in BIOS or CPUz. Works without issues at full core speed. Some folks report unstable even running 4th core under 1GHz. I have run ORTHOS for six hours and Prime95 for six hours without errors at stock 2.8GHz (haven't run it at current o/c yet).
Umm.. lessee. I have run a few benches: Cinebench R10 and POVRay. Benchmarks are in line with Anandtechs PhenomII X4 920 at stock speeds. So, I guess I'm good to go with this little guy!!
Some pics below: I'm using Vista32. Vista 64 (which I do not have) shows better results with Cinebench R10.

NOTE: I haven't yet found an app that accurately monitors the core temps. I've tried the following:

Sorry, I don't run Prime. I use OCCT's Intelburntest instead. Cause I have face issues in the pass where the comp is prime stable but crashes in games.

what kinda test you ran before? imo if you pass blendtest, then basically you'll have no problem w/ anything. i mite be wrong thou. :)

Nope, not really. Try running both small and large test as the same time. Its even harder to pass compared to blend.

But I realise Prime does not stress CPU as hard as AMD's own testing utility (it test Integers and check registers as well) but Prime doesn't.

Check out Intel Burn Test, read that Intel use it to test their own CPU and it stresses CPU even more than Prime. Now OCCT includes this test in their software and you no longer need to run from command prompt.

It seems the latest 720's are finally locked up. I've tried four 904EPMW with 0044, 0108, 0234, and 0348. I was able to unlock two of them, but BSOD when starting Windows. Two couldn't be unlock at all (Bios keeps resetting to default).

p.s. all on M4A79 with modded bios.

I haven't ran OCCT yet, but NB is completely stock. I will play with it later.

Phenom II x3 720 0904EPMW works with 4 cores (prime-checked only 10 minutes by now).

The mb has problems finding my 8800 gt @ POST with ACC enabled.
Works with integrated graphics without problems.
