Gigabyte GA-MA790FXT-UD5P Thread

I got my new Giabyte board a couple of days ago, sadly I have no CPU yet and no one has AM3 Cpu´s in stock in Sweden yet. So only pictures for now.

Layout looks nice and clean, dual slot spacing between Pci-e slots.

790X vs 790FX, what do you think? (UD4P vs UD5P)
If I'm aiming at hitting the highest NB freq I can to make better use of DDR3. 2x16 Crossfire doesnt matter here

The board looks quite good, but havnt ordered yet because nobody has the new chips in stock

If the IMC's are the same DDR3 or DDR2 sderiously wont have any effect on your NB.

My UD5P should arrive tomorrow or the day after, same with my G.Skill DDR3-1600. The soonest I think I can get my CPU is thursday from shopblt.com, they show in stock on wednesday.

Truly a pity the 940 BE and 920 don't can't work in AM3 boards.

Would have increased AMD marketshare abit.

I think that it's not true. Check this. It can't be true becuse the reference clock is the source of the CPU, NB, HT, and RAM clocks. So if you raise the referece clock all of these will raise with it lineary.

By the way where is you mobo? :D

I'd guess thats the "Gigabyte Sata2" chip responsible for the additional sata connectors. Iirc its a Jmicron chip.

yah well according to those bios options ctrl + F1 has not been tabbed, More options show up in bios for memory when you do that on the GX board..

On a side note I now know how to get the HT up on my board.....they omit the fact that SB volts are tied into HT.....

Well, my board showed up today. Too bad I have no AM3 CPU and no solid idea of when I will have an AM3 CPU. Nothing worse than having a mobo that you can't test to see if it is good or not. Oh well, I can blame my compulsive hardware purchasing.

I have to say, I really really like esata backplane... super easy to connect bare HDD's for formatting or cloning with the molex to dual sata power adapter. Nifty.

I got my CPU today! An 720BE Stepping CACZC AC 0904DPDW, will post back upp this weekend when I get my new rig up and running!

Out of like twenty orders in the last month, none of which I gave a crap about in the least as far as delivery time goes, 19 showed up the next day.

I ordered my 720BE yesterday. Guess which single order out of 20 decided to take two days therefore not coming until monday on the first weekend I've had off in two months...

thanks im trying to scramble for some AA batts for my cam and i cant go back out for now i have my son in the bath, im gonna take pic of the bios hopefully when he comes out.

Memory options in particualr is what I need to see.

Then I need to see the same memory page on the asus if its not to troublesome for you.

Woot 17,500 mhz option I wonder what we need to use for cooling to get that high ;)

I here you! I missed my CPU by 2 hours (post office was closed) and hade to wait an extra day to, and it sucked - big time!

Other thougts:
Board and CPU runs fine, BUT don´t try to install win with USB keyboard. I recomend everyone how buys this board to update to F4D bios before installing windows. F4d fixes USB keboard issue and some other stuff, including DDR3 voltage tabel over 2,2V :D

My A-Data Viesta EE didi not work ón this board, borked 3 Vista installs. If my kit is dying or if my board does not like them, remains to be seen. Crucial Ballistix work great. And 1600Mhz divider is also solid so far. Good Work Gigabyte!

Also it's good to see that this board give +1.4V on IMC/L3! I hope GA will implement this option in BIOS for old 790FX-DQ6 as well.
2.3V+ for CPU is more than enough :D

VCORE was/is stock @ 1,325 NB vid was raised to 11. Currently repairing my Vista install as I was a bit to optimistic earlier tonight ;)

Figured I'd bump this with an update... got the 720BE in today, as usual I experience a brand new tiny irritating hardware issue that I've never seen the likes of before.

I build a minimum of 15-20 systems a month at work, from value box to high end workstation, and rarely do I experience a setup/install that does not have at least one minor and annoying quirk.

The BIOS = Overall nice, with a dash of annoy

With default bios settings, computer enters bios properly with my Microsoft sidewinder X6 (semi-fugly but lovable) keyboard. I can enter BIOS option "MB Intelligent Tweaker", but have no control over any fields, and BIOS is unresponsive (completely locked, escape does not work), upon reset BIOS restarts succesfully but still experiences same issue. If "Support USB Keyboard" is enabled, then F10 and Save settings, BIOS will fail to restart. Stuck at blank cursor screen, completely unresponsive. BIOS is trashed. Must be CMOS'd. After clean BIOS restart with MS keyboard replaced by Legacy POS Dell keyboard, BIOS functions perfectly and I have access to all options. This keyboard worked with my Biostar 790GX, and MS makes solid peripherals IMO, so suspicion of blame falls heavily on Gigabyte ATM.

So in summary, if I want to OC I have to switch keyboards. :rolleyes:

I am looking at it in a good way, at least the thing is up and running solid overall. A stable clean running system is worth putting up with some type of wonky BIOS bug.

Anyways, it's late so no real OC but initial impressions are good. Have my G.Skill running rated speed at DDR3-1600, and stable with stock volt OC to 3.2; I will do some further tweaking tomorrow night. It'll be interesting to see what this $155 chip will do.

Strange... msimax has some problem with DDR3-1600 setup. Here you can read about that.

Hmm. Haven't run memtest yet (just installed windows about an hour ago), but I seem very stable.

I haven't tried to go over DDR3-1600 yet, so have not experienced the same problem he has (yet, hopefully never). I'll be doing an initial OC tomorrow night so I may be able to give some more input then.

I did the same I ordered some 3x2g gskills, that had rave reviews, etc they worked for everyone that bought them. They are not the fastest, they are not the tightest timings. I can cherry pick the 2 best sticks + because I ordered a 3 channel kit they will have better resale value.

I need something stable however to conduct tests. I rarely find the highest binned ram stable enough for 24/7 use. They are for benching and benching only. I returned my d9's becasue of this.

I will pick up a good 3x1 gig set for benching down the line, as it is pointless for me to spend alot of loot on a set of memory that sits on a shelf for the majority of its life save hardcore amphetamine
filled benching sessions.

I feel exactly the same as you as far as ram sticks go. I've had the same experiences... in fact the reason I purchased these was so I could have a cheap n'easy "guaranteed to work" set to start out with. Now I can purchase an exotic kit for benching when a good deal pops up and not have to worry about compatibility or stability.

I've had really good luck with cheap ram giving me stability combined with good mild OC and/or slightly tighter timings.

720 BE doing 3.4 semi-table @ 1.375vcore and 3.6 stable @ 1.45vcore w/NB & SB bump. Did quick 20min OCCT on each. I'll run 1hour later on when I am eating dinner. Multi only OC, all other settings running default besides manual set mem to 1600

Nothing amazing yet but very satisfactory.

So far very stable CPU voltage on this board, slightly under but no discernable vdroop at this voltage/load.

Do let us know if the NB clocking actually works. I've read numerous accounts of it not working etc refusing to boot.

That is the bp on the UD4P as I can't be bothered to take the UD5P out of the case again, but it's identical.

I've run into the NB clock problem as well, anything except stock value = no post with both bios versions, F3 and F4.

This is my first post on here and I would like to say hi to everyone. I belive I might get on the AMD wagon with this board. It is one of the best looking board and It has almost every feature that I am after. Although I have not found any extensive reviews on this board, I am hoping to see EP45 series performance in AMD line with this board. To those who has this board, Has anybody tried the AMD overdrive with it? and what are the max stable OCing performance you have achieved with AM3 chips? Thanks

I got to 3,8hhz within a few hours of first touching a amd system since the s939 days with my 720BE on air, I bet I can push it further once I get used to the (for me) unusual world of Phenom oc'ing, biggest issue with clocking is NB speed, currently on the UD5P all it leads to is crashes / no post.
Also there is not much software to oc in windows, the AMD software doesn't recognize the cpu (no surprise as the software has not been updated in ages) and Gigabytes Easytune lacks a lot of options.
Ram can be a bit tricky to clock, the IMC seems to favor tight timings over high clocks as 1333 6-5-5 was hassle free but anything above 1700 takes a lot of patience to get it working regardless of timings.
I'm sure most of the issues can be fixed though with bios updates though.

Thanks for the pic. Is it solid enough on your opinion? I'm planning to buy and GA-MA790FX-UD5P, the AM2+ version of the mobo and I'm using now my stock back plate for the IFX, cause I don't like IFX-10. :) So, will it be strong enough to take the IFX with 2-3 fans? I think it looks good but can't gauge the thickness of the plate. The material should be aluminum, am I right?

My Zerotherm is rather heavy as well and the board doesn't bend or fall apart, so it's strong enough for big coolers.
Just don't ship it with UPS while a big heatsink is installed:p:

Yes, it's alu and certainly thick enough to hold a Thermalright in place.

naokaji you can use AMD Overdrive with your setup, just download version 2.1.4 :)

2.1.5 doesn't work on Gigabyte for some reason and AMD is working on fixing this in version 2.1.6 ;)

NB Waterblock

Which waterblock will work with this mobo?
I have MA790X-UD4 and it's got the same NB heatsink as the UD5P.
I have the DD MPC Universal and I've been using it on ASUS boards fine, but cannot use it anymore on Gigabyte due to different mountin hole locations.:shakes:

It's 2.1.5_2385, the latest, not working with Gigabyte, but 0218 works fine.

K, thx a lot. Prolly it wouldnt have mattered a lot but I dont know what kind of screws my IFX-14 back plate use. But if the standard back plate doesnt work for the EK supreme it's nice to know that I could replace it with the IFX-14 back plate:cool:

yeah, i can confirm that combination works ;p

its just very fiddly to install, i was pulling my hair out for a while.

and the BIOS still feels pretty flakey to me, although i havent tried tweaking much. only changed the multiplier to 16x on the X3 720, and will probably leave it like that until theres a new BIOS.

I only use the IFX-14 back plate though;) Not the IFX-10, nor the IFX-14. I use this back plate for my EK Supreme block:cool:

Keenan, could you please give me a screen shot of your bios overclock settings?

Also, what banks are your DIMMs in? I see two blue banks, near the cpu socket and two white banks further away. Which banks did you put your modules in?

The motherboard manual says to put both in either the two white, or the two blue, but my previous experience with GIGABYTE Mobos, the manual had it backwards.

I know I am either using the wrong banks, or I am overvolting the wrong setting, because my NB will not go higher than 2200, using a 720BE with DDR3 1600.

On my M3A78-T (AM2+ / 720BE), I can set the NB to 2800.

* Multiplier = 19.5
* Bus Speed = 200
* Motherboard = Gigabyte GA-MA790FXT-UD5P
* Memory Speed and Timings = 2 x 1GB 1333Mhz DDR3 @ 8-8-8-18
* NB Frequency = 2.8Ghz
* HT Frequency = 2.6Ghz

Voltages

* NB voltage control = +0.1V
* SB/HT volatge control = +0.1V
* NB/PCIe/PLL voltage control = +0.1V
* DDR VTT voltage control = Normal
* CPU NB VID control = +0.250V
* CPU VID control = +0.250V

I use the 2 blue banks, when I first used them and saw my memory was running at 64bit I thought, how is this possible, but then I saw the setting for ganged and unganged

I take it you dont need any info on what that means..?
