Building a Sossaman rig?

After searching through some internet webshops and ebay i found kinda interesting deals on sossaman goods:

Mobo: $19 => 13Eur + shippings (serously wtf, new mobo with $19 buy now price)

Still tho i have two Quad builds coming up already :rofl:

Build#2: Dual Dualcore
2x Opteron 265, Iwill DK8S2, 2GB DDR1 ECC, bla bla bla

Yea 16th cores wouldn't be bad if i get those Sossaman stuffs with good price :D

What does this rig draw at load? This might be a serious replacement for the P4 2.26 that I have for a server right now :eek:

2.0GHz Sossamans TDP is 32W :P
Which means the whole systems draw from mains under 130W, of course depending how many HDDs u have.

I checked new prices for mobos shipping costs to finland via USPS: Oringinaly $75 via DHL. $37 via USPS :D

Too bad man, the shipping kills it off at 53 USD + 25 more per item.
I would have liked to build a farm of maybe 5-10 of them... maybe someone in the US can help me out? :D

Edit: I'll call that store first thing tomorrow morning and see how many they got. Will let you guys know :)

After checking some sossaman datasheets and old threads i found these out :)

Id recommend the 266FSB mod for Xeon LV 1.667GHz.
10x266=2660Mhz
And 200FSB mod for Xeon LV 2.0GHz
12x200=2400Mhz

Because 266mod would take the 2.0s freq almoust 3.2GHz which is impossible for Yonah cpu. (fastest seen 2.950GHz)

Count me in for a cheap board !

i was looking into these rigs like 2 weeks ago, the boards have onboard gfx but i found this adapter if you wanted to use the pcie-x8 slot and run a low end x16 card. i only say low end cause i dont know if power to the card would be an issue, like if the board can supply enough to the card thru the adapter to run a good gfx card. i was thinkin of this cause you could use you could run it as a media box to watch movies and music off.

If you are using a rackmount chassis which would lay horizontally, you could simply place a piece of metal with thermal adhesive paste on cpu die.

That looks like a good solution to me as well, it's the cheapest way to go and some old P3 heatsinks would do the job just fine.

Good thing is than it doesn't matter which heatsinks u use with 32W TDP cpus :D

1) The board ONLY uses DDR2-400(PC2-3200) ECC REG memory..ONLY!!!!
2) Only the HS from OEMXS work..ONLY!!!!!!
There were two different mounts used for these chips.
Intel chose one, everyone else used another.
Intel's version is a socket 604/771 hole parrern in the MB BUT you can't use any of the regular 604/771 HS for it.
Now here's the good part:
OEMXS is 19 miles from my house.
I have bought these from them twice.
First time I had them shipped, they charged me $25.00 to ship the two heatsinks.
Second time I went and picked up 8 of them and they cost me $10.00 each and just the time and gasoline to drive 38 miles..:up:
3)I know the guy at the motherboard place a little.
I'm sure I can get him to send me a "bunch" of the boards at one time and save some shipping.
4) Who in Europe is going to send US in the US some of the 2000 sossamans at that wonderfull price?:D

Those HS will work also, smaller than the others but pure copper.

The standard boxes I use cost €5,25 to have them shipped if they weigh less than .5kg. That should be possible. 10 CPUs will fit in there. I think $50/pair would be doable. Let me check what it costs to get 10 shipped to my home.

EDIT: They're out of stock. Lucky me, I got 4 of them :D

If someone needs a pair of these, I am willing to trade them for a board and a pair of sinks :p:

Please guys, let me verify that this German shop truly does have a bunch of these CPUs, if they only have like 2 or 3 you already overbooked them and this whole thing isn't gonna work. The CPUs are normally hard to find, and the mobos aren't worth squat without a source for CPUs.
Mem etc. ain't the problem, but we need to secure cheap CPU source before going all crazy.

How tall are those oemxs heatsinks? I have a 2U rackmount case in the garage that I have yet to wedge anything into, and space still in the rack.

Either way, if someone can arrange me some cheap CPUs in the states, I'm in.

App 2 inches tall..all aluminum, BUT you should have fans on them so add another 25mm unless that case is set up with the sideways mounted fans to blow thru the HS..
One of those tiny chipset fans is nice also on the NB and SB..

Ok cheapest registered ecc 512mb pc2-3200R sticks from corsair costs 14€... 2 of them and we're ready to crunch.

The case is set up for front to back airflow with three fans, so I think that should be enough. If not, I can mount some ductwork over the CPUs. a 2-inch heat sink should fit fine, so I think I'll be in business should the opportunity to get some CPUs present itself. :)

Heck, I'm willing to put together two or three of these things to upgrade some of my ancient servers.

Now, if I can just straighten out why some of my BSD machines will run WCG units, and some won't...

He's gonna look more closely and report back with the exact number in a while. :D

So what do you want to do? Should I order all of them and try to get an even better price, then distribute them within Europe/get someone (aka Jaco :D ) to send a bunch to the US guys?

Or do you want to order yourself? In that case I'll "just" take 10 CPUs or so for myself.. :wasntme:

Correct, be carefull guys.. MOST of the heatsinks that say they are for sossaman are the little tiny ones for the supermicro and tyan boards not the socket 771 spacing like the Intel boards.

I tried the mod to 200FSB(from 166) with the 1667's and it didn't work for me..maybe I did something wrong..:shrug:

If there's no other way of getting them, yes, you may have a pair of mine. The problem is that if I'm going to sell you the pair of chips, I am not making the profit I was hoping for, thus making the system an aweful lot more expensive than I wanted. I was hoping to break even.

I will keep at least one of the sets. If you manage to get another set, I will sell my second with a (large :D) profit set to raise some funds for the mobo and the heatsinks. Otherwise I'll have them sitting on the shelf till I get more money.

I again found out the hard way. Some "special" dynatron HS I bought won't work, so $50 later I have two small chunks of copper that won't work.

TBH, Sammy.2 is not online. I'm still waiting for some HS's from someone who won't be named ;) I doubt it thou. Sammy barley uses 1gb of ram with all 4 cores loaded on WCG. Not sure why, but it does.

Remember these little guys are not x64 compatible. So 4gb of memory is pointless. I'm running Server 2k3 Enterprise, IIRC you need Enterprise to even have windblows recognize 4gb of memory. (Don't quote me on that, Standard may work, 4gb in 32bit os)

So would 2 x 512MB sticks do the job? Or would 2GB be wizer. IIRC the Intel board needs Dual sticks.

Ram is cheap. I'd stick to 2gb for these guys. That's all Sammy.2 has, and i'm sure it will run 4x WCG fine.

For $54 flat, those ARK eATX cases look nice for people with neat roommates. Also will be very useful for any dual-CPU build. I'd say to Dave and other dual-processor fanatics; stock up! They're cheap!

Yes there cheap, cheapest you can get in the UK is £62 plus shipping, $125 + $24 :( Main reason why I went ATX and hacked the hell outta it

Ouch. Typical server chassis ship for $20-30 USD, and it's already the cheapest listed server chassis. For guys like Dave or DD_TUNG, a dozen would be win.
