Nice performance but yet still no release date? Btw I'm still debating whethere I should grab 2 of these or stick with my stock cooler. Don't get me wrong, the stock cooler on HD4870 is still a good one, 51 idle at 40% fan speed ain't bad is it? I think if you put 2x90mm fan on the T-rad then what the noise level will be like. :rolleyes:
They need to release a T-rad2 Extreme - able to perfectly fit 2x120mm fans :D
btw you can fit 120mm fans on the HR-03 with stock clips
To be totally fair with the HR03-GT, they should have tested it with 2x92 and 1x120 as well ...
Yeah, HR-03 GT's a great performer when it's given enough airflow to dissipate the heat that it accumulates.
And how does it fare against Accelero S1?
^^was about to mention it too. this has nothing on Accelero S1.
IMO, the real test of any cooler is when the core is overclocked. I have seen in the past a Thermaltake DuOrb kick butt at stock speeds then then get completely overwhelmed when a moderate overclock is applied.
For all we know the T-Rad will get its butt kicked by an overclocked RV770. Not likely but still...
vGPU mod + 900+ MHz for core and then we can draw conclusions. :D

Not really. You see even on the new heatsinks for AMD / nvidia the only contact the mosfets make with the heatsinks is by touching the same metal parts as the memory - in fact, they're the farthest from the fin dissipation area.Quote:

I like XSAlliN's idea. he' thinking in the right direction. vrm area is a pain to cool. It can make or break a successful vga overclock. 3rd party cooling companies need to focus on vrm cooling. making dinky heatsinks with thermaltape for vrm area is not a solution.
I'd say the chances of that happening are low, but that's only because I've not yet seen an AIB with cards that feature Thermalright coolers. I've no idea what the future plans of Thermalright are, so that might change.....Quote:

It's not that difficult for a company like Thermalright, or even others with similar equipment. It's true that is also related to power consumption, since more power equals more heat. You go for a little OC and the card can take it and no the it's not the GPU whom fails it's the VRM, since the GPU is properly cooled and the VRM is not. About your last card the HD 3850, it's irrelevant since my last card was an HD 3870 and I didn't had problems with the VRM on that card.The problems come with current generations HD 4xxx where the VRM gets really HOT and we have no solution to properly cool it if we aim for an aftermarket cooling solution. The net is full complains about HD 4xxx crashing in games with intensive graphics and most blame it on driver, since some users have water cooling for their VGA which cools their cards down to 36*C in load so those guys don't expect to be a heat problem. Little to they know, that their GPU runs at 36*C in Load wile their VRM goes beyond 100*C. HD 4870 has a digital VRM and you can see his temperatures in LOAD and it fails beyond 120*C:

To develope a new product or coming up a new product combination have to take many aspects into consideration.
Although your idea might work, but it also bring new compavility issues.
In the limited spce in the chassise, size is the issue.
Furthermore, our HR-03GT and T-Rad2 is really good for modification.
As long as you have follow the on-line mannual to clean the chip thoroughly, the ramsinks will work great.

I remember someone 'gluing' his RAM sinks to the PCB with some nail polish and then he simply used normal TIM for the contact area with the chip. It helped quite a bit with lowering temperatures according to him. Although that was quite a while ago and I have no idea where I have to look up his posts.Quote:

Individual sinks aren't the optimal soloution, but I don't know why anyone uses those horrible aluminum ones when they can get the forged copper Enzotech ones, which also use some of the highest quality 3M thermal tape you can get.
The answer is quite simple, case they're not available in every country, yet I see they're full CU and might do better then the aluminum models. If they atached some piepes to that and cover the size of the VRM might do a great job. :)

That's not completely true, the higher fin density is offset by a decrease in thickness which probably makes it have a lower resistance than the HR-03. Although I don't think there is that much of a difference and Thermalright is probably the only one whom knows these kind of things for sure.Quote:

Main reason for the T-rad2 is the thin-ness. Making it suitable for higher performance fans on CF and SLI. Im totally down for it, TR hasn't let me down yet and as said dying to get 2 of these bad boys for my CF setup. Might not be for pure cooling might, but the fact that I know these can and will be much quieter and cooler than the stock fans at higher speeds which is thumbs up for me.

Truth be told 4850 is a fine example on how a cooler shouldn't be built,the card gets ridiculosly hot,mine hadn't had problems with stability @ stock clocks but when OC'ed it stopped @ ~670Mhz/1050 which was really low even after V-mod I couldn't hit more than 700/1080 but with the addition of a 120mm fan @ 1100RPM things got stable @ 780-1140,cooling the VRM is a tricky thing even with the fan the temp is hovering around 93 degrees :(
Also the fan get's really loud @ over 35% when it touches 80% the thing sounds like a vacuum cleaner.

Well, it might. At some point, when voltage regulation gets too hot it will behave unexpectedly (as the diodes reach their breakdown voltage easier at higher temperatures, and go into Geiger mode) and then it could overvolt or undervolt the card. So it could potentially fry it.Quote:

ok I woke up 3 this morning and I can't get back to sleep cause of the stupid bending issue. So end up I take the T-rad2 and card apart and reassemble it back I tried few different method. first I saw online installation guide is a bit different they use the hard ring on the frond size and soft on the back so I tried that way but there still a gap between the cooler and the card in the frint side. Then I end up putting both ring on the front side and finally it looks like it is level and a lot less bending of the card but I still have to add the stock X brace in the back side. As result it is few more degree less now. May be is because of I test it at mid night so room temp is so low about 12-14c. But any way at least now the cooler is tighten up and only slight bending. I am happy now.:rofl:
First I have 2 92 mm fan and during 3dmark06 the max temp it gets about 46c and idol is about 37c and room temp is about 12c to 14cQuote:

What fans were you useing on that accelero s1 and was it a rev 2?
Your memio temps seem pretty high for an accelero aswell.
Also I'm curious as to why you only tested it at high on 1280x1000 since thats not much for a 4870 to handle.
that's just the summary of some different configs , I've just tested my own reference sapphire hd4870. I've tested @ 1280x1024 bc , since it's the default setting, we're all able to compare different settings with the same tests ;) . Regarding the resolution , indeed .. This video card it's the 1680x1050 queen, possibly with aa-af ;)
Keep in mind that the first results were posted 1 month ago and it was hotter than now , with an ambient temperature higher than now . You should expect a couple of degrees lower than that .

The point is it wouldn't unless it was doubled in size and with the way the hr-03gt is built there's be no vreg area airflow getting through and the cards wouldn't do so well.

thanks for the info so here we go. I tried about 15mins and the room temp is about 31c now so hot in the bay area. The GPU itself is ok to me but the RAM and voltage seem a bit high. So I stopped the test and see attach below picture worth thousand words.Quote:

so now the time is 23:23 I am in Bay area, CA. Room temp is about 22c and here is the result it is really similar to noon time which room temp is 32c. So no idea why this behavior happening I thought it support to be a little cooler but seem like everything is the same... BTW GPUZ 0.2.8 is out

mr2sw i have getting similar temps as you are on the core and the memory. i just haven't been so lucky with the vrms. im guessing the vrms that it is reading from are the 3 next to the vitec chip. i covered the pulse and vitec chips along with the 3 vrms next to the vitec and the 2 next to the pulse chips but after covering those with the supplied t rad sinks i saw no difference in vrm temperature. im getting about 60-65 idle and they are always above 100 in load. they usually get up to around 115 and stop about there. maybe there is something im doing wrong? im gonna try to get a fan to blow across the card and see what it does.
I'm about to send back my T-Rad2 because of the same issues...it can't cool the VRMs well enough to keep the card from crashing.
can any one please please post stock cooler's VRMs for about 5 to 20mins Ati tool test? OR some other after market cooler. So we can compare? Thanks,
well i think the supplied vrm sinks don't fit the chips properly. if i look very closely at mine i think i see a small gap between the chip and the sink and i have the best mount possible. what im thinking about doing is getting the rubber thermal mount from the ram on my 3870 stock heatsink and folding it in half and putting a metal bracket across the top and screwing it down into the holes. that should get a good mount on the vrms and should cool it well.

just bought this cooler this weekend and installed with great success. jumped my stable oc from 640 to 745 with 10 degree drop in idle and 20 in loads.
The stock sinks that come with the cooler are aluminum. they're horrible. if you want to cool the vr's you need a copper sink.

80 degrees celcius isn't bad that's what they have been recently with most cards just hasn't gotten bad enough to be to hot till 4870 etc.
People have been reporting 100-120 with TRad2 lately which begs me the ? why no one is decideing to use the stock ram/mosfet cooling plate? to keep them nice and cool view the airflow and large surface area.

right now in my current situation i can't work with the way it is. i have only looked at the vrm temps when playing lost planet and grid. on lost planet i have seen the vrms go up to 115C in about 1 minute. imagine if i was playing for a long period of time. and in grid the gpu load isn't even 100% because i got v sync on but the vrms still get to 100-105.

The red stock cooling plate for the card is 1 piece, I don't see how it could be to thick to fit under the Trad2
I did try Thermaltake (ugh, but it was available locally) solid copper ramsinks on the VRMs...with those on they were hitting 95c in Assassin's Creed and Crysis and higher on RTHDRIBL/Atitool/Furmark.
A week of those temps killed my card...it won't game for more than two hours at it's stock speed of 795/1100 now. So I don't recommend stressing the cards to heavily if you're running this cooler until something is worked out to cool these VRMs.
I just said screw it and I'm exchanging my 4870 for 4850 Crossfire :P
I bet those won't need a cooling system so complex it doesn't exist :shakes:
I did not try the bottom half of the stock cooler, but after trying to take it apart and almost ruining the screws because I didn't have a screwdriver small/flat enough, I decided better not.
They are nearly as hot as 4870's, I know I have two in 4850s crossfire and most certainly they are hotter than a single 4870. My two Duorbs hit 70c with my 4850's oced to 700/1150. I'm gonna swap one Duorb out for a Gx815 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...7009&Tpk=gx815 due to fan noise on the other two Duorbs I tried, but 70c in crossfire is not bad at all, and the one Duorb I'm keeping is silent. To be fair I do have a thermaltake armor case (with 250mm side fan remove), but it has a True in it with 2x120mm 70cf and 63cf fans mounted on the cooler, plus a 120mm 73CF intake and exit fans ,and two more 92mm 43CF fans, plus a 120mm PSU fan. Try these If you need more air flow, they can handle 4870s in crossfire no sweat. http://www.pctoys.com/840556087687.html they are slimmer than the original ACx2 coolers and can be used with regular crossfire bridges, plus are silent as hell. I tried a DuOrb on my 4870 and ALL the temps went through the roof, so that quickly went back to the shop. Seemed like a cheaply built cooler as well, not trying to knock your setup just my opinion. I am tempted by the Twin Turbo and V Power, but if I do use aftermarket on these cards it will probably be a set of Zalman VF900s I already own from my old X1900 CF setup. Honestly I think this T-Rad2 would probably be perfect for a 4850 but after being told to piss off my Thermalright's tech support just for asking some basic questions I think I will tell them to piss off by not buying the products...I sent the T-Rad2 back to Heatsink Factory yesterday anyways.Quote:

If you didn't like the Duorb and it's only slightly better than the stock cooler on high(but it's small enough for crossfire and quieter than the stock cooler) you will hate the VF900 it performs worse than the Duorb and is louder. These cards just run hot.Quote:

DuoOrb's don't have enough surface area to dissipate a 4870's heat.
i had the vf900 on my 3870. it cooled the gpu fine but its so small that the vrms would get screwed without proper cooling.
Wow thanks for the heads-up. Guess I'll have to scrap that plan. The VF900s I have owned were def. quieter than the DuOrb I tried, but it seems like some of those are noisier than others.Quote:
