ooh yes this does sound interesting! unfortunately I've not done anything ghetto myself...
I've done a couple, dunno how ghetto they are but they aren't, what I would call, bourgeoise mods. I'll post some when I get around to it later today.
Well, I did a ghetto mod for my sister.....
I called it Ghetto-a-PC (pronounced GET-HER), she needed a PC real quick so I did this:
System spec's:
Socket 370 1000Mhz PIII Toluando (or whatever that series is called)
ASUS TUV4X Mobo (excellent mobo for PIII's, btw)
An old ATI card
512MB RAM like 168 Pin I think...
20GB ATA HD
350W PSU
LITE-ON DVD Burner
Case: some card board box's :)
Misc: Zip-ties and Duck tape (no screws...;))

Here it is on her desk :)
hehe, it lasted for a month or so until the mobo died on me  now she's got a more modern dell that I fixed up.....
I can't help but laugh, it was fun   :ROTF:
Smee, that's überghetto! Was your sister happy with it? :p:
Nothing that I ever post will be as ghetto as smee's creation but here's some stuff anyways:
Here's a computer that I made 2 years ago. It was designed to lay flat on surfaces but when I got a new computer, it was demoted to a standing secondary computer on my desk.
http://i182.photobucket.com/albums/x.../Ghetto1-1.jpg
The harddrive is being held up using an aluminium frame which is taped to the case wall and held up using the white foam stuff. As said, it's supposed to lay flat on the table so I had to make a few modifications.
http://i182.photobucket.com/albums/x...ip/Ghetto2.jpg
The PSU is held up by the tiny little piece of wood in one of the corners - can't wait to wake up in the middle of the night from the sound of my PSU destroying the rest of my computer.
http://i182.photobucket.com/albums/x...ip/Ghetto4.jpg
A view from the front, standing on its side on my desk.
http://i182.photobucket.com/albums/x...ip/Ghetto5.jpg
And lastly, the stickers that can be found on the front.
http://i182.photobucket.com/albums/x...ip/Ghetto6.jpg
It should also be noted that the lower optical drive is in an aluminum bracket system whilst the top one is once again fastened using tape and the frame around the hole to the outside.
Another ghetto mod is the GPU cooler which I made a thread about:

inCore
haha awesome posts so far keep them going.
love the cardboard box pc :P
reminds me of my dads friend who built a pc around a 2by4 piece of wood
rubber bands work great to hold fans over top of ram.
That wooden case has the potential of being a real tight project i think.
Thanks boqonx. I put some serious work into it around 2 years ago but the deadline approached (was a school project) faster than I hoped and I couldn't do some stuff that I would have wanted to do.
For example, the cables are just thrown in there and it's impossible to remove the graphics card right now, without removing 9 long screws as well as more than a meter's length of glue. Things like that were hard to solve under time pressure and considering that I was 16 and that it was my first computer build ever (I had only had crap such as HP and Compaq before), it came out pretty decent.
@inCore: I love the CCFL or whatever it is (bubbles?) thats just thrown in there. not attached to anything or even straight haha!
http://i26.photobucket.com/albums/c1.../PIC_00272.jpg
Here is one I did along time ago to my old x800xl.
Here is my ghetto mod. It was quite unnecessary, but did it anyway...
(I love the CRT for seeming endless precision) this is a 17 inch monitor, weighing in at 65 pounds (according to shipping)
I hope the text in photo is ledgible, I don't want to type it out. :)
http://i227.photobucket.com/albums/d...00HsinkNet.jpg
the inspection sticker underneath the heatsink is now thermal paste, remove the screw from heatsink, and sticker should be like new to read...
I added this after the bi-yearly cleaning that takes the house fire appeance off of the plastics inside, and for those thinking this 50 dollar monitor is getting cheapskated, I paid 540 dollars (without shipping) in 1999...
Long Live The CRT (especially late 1998 and newer, with the pci power standard)
Lol, what about using an aircompressor for blowing away all the dirt in there? :P
Well this is mine, I call it a custom airflow redirection system. Its some paper taped together, and taped to my Freezer 7 / 80mm case fan for more airflow :p:
http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y23...9/DSC00388.jpg
Not bad for 10 mins work! Lowered temps around 1c idle and 3c load, so quite pleased! When I was making it, the paper was held in place just by the suction alone, which made it much easier and worked well as a proof of concept
Not sure if its the best way to introduce myself to the forum but hey, at 17 I can't throw around the little money I have so you just have to have sympathy!
Not extreme ghetto but i strapped a socket A hs to my 7900GS and it did wonders. load temps down from 60C+ to just touching 50 :D
http://i195.photobucket.com/albums/z.../P1010002s.jpg
uh, isnt the gts 512mb the g92?
Yes it is.
These 2 fans on the 8800 GTX dropped temps by 10 deg C..Used Loctite grey silicon to "glue" them on..Easy to remove as well when needed.
The Intel feeds -The stock fan is still there and connected as per normal.Riva`d to 100% as well..
The 80mm fan exhausts or extracts the heat from the cooler fins..
What you could also try using with slightly less effeciency is a thermaltake pci slot fan mounted under the grafix card..I had that for a while but ultimately not as good as this setup..
Let us know your results..
Hahahahaha anyone who knew me back when I posted a lot would know. If you look through the threads I started, you'll see my various failed ghetto mods.
here my ''ghetto modded'' Ultra :) .. ok just a temporary solution to find out, how this kind of ''air diffuser'' can help to lower case internal temperature
and BTW, must say, this really helps, if gotta full air cooled, and mid range
overclocked system inside such ''ill-ventilated'' case like Antec p182 (sorry didn't mean to hurt any Antec owners :) )
but if like to keep Antec stock tri-cool fans @ low- or mid rpm level to avoid of ''vacuum-cleaner'' like noize coming from (under) your desk :)
Good idea !
Take it one step further which will produce awesome results..use a pci extractor fan under the Ultra BUT seal it to the ultra ..This way it gets extracted AND shoved outside of the case.
Remember that any substance likes the path of least resistance..So you have to help it change direction and that is where the fan comes in.
being from the third world i take pride in xtreme overclocking using sticky tape, wires, pliers and zip ties at every oppotunity :D
like these zip ties as holddowns and wire ties for 'sink mounting
http://www.flytek.effectivehosting.c.../ghettogpu.jpg
this sticky tape as moisture exclusion :p:
http://flytek.effectivehosting.co.za.../underside.JPG
camping gas stove for brasing
http://www.flytek.effectivehosting.c...50/burning.jpg
polystyrene frozen fish packing box as insulation

and
http://flytek.effectivehosting.co.za.../ice/bench.jpg
and my current 24/7 rig...ln2 block with 5volt 120mm fan for cooling.
cpu is celeron 420 at 100% overclock on stock volts.
block is held down only by its own weight :shakes:
http://flytek.effectivehosting.co.za/pics/block.jpg
and lastly my partner and i bench as...team ghetto ;)
edit: ooops...nearly forgot our ghetto vmods
haha mate class well played especially like own wait holddown :P
This thread is LEGEND:up:
Hey CD !!
Flytek, awesome stuff you messing with bud...
remember guys try not to quote pics.
Also will be doing a little modding for cooling myself soon so expect pictures soon ish.
I saw quite a few box rigs at a lan this weekend... lol I love seeing them.
Btw, i love that ultra idea i43...
And is the intel stock cooler fan good for anything? Cause i might want to start messing a round with it and putting it on :banana::banana::banana:.
i once ziptied a P4 heatsink onto a 7900gt. it died, and i have no pics, not my favorite memory
WHAT THE HELL !!!!! WTF are you doing with your hardware, I feel sorry for those NEW hardware, DAM.
lol i think i have most of you beat for ghetto mods lol this was great. this was a couple of years ago in the middle of winter time cold as can be and had the ac in the window lol. got good temps as i can remember seeing in bios -10c to -13c. ill just let the pics do the talkin got good results. got a world record out of it:D
http://valid.x86-secret.com/show_oc?id=121318 that was one night testing it
http://valid.x86-secret.com/show_oc?id=124434 this was when i took the world record had my winter jacket on with door closed
edit: just remembered i was runnin just water and the fluid they gave me then the temps shot up and computer shut off i was like wtf. i froze the pump and res solid. lol nutin a hair dryer cant fix. believe it or not it fired back up and worked. pure anti freeze that time.
p4 511 2.8ghz
asus p5p800 se
evga 7800gs agp
geil ddr1 500
aspire 500w
kingwin aquastar pump finally died not to long ago after some left over dry ice from a bench session
old 1988 ac with no thermostat on the condenser and on high and a few pieces of cardboard about a 1/4 inch of ice was on the pipes and condenser
Card board computer gets my vote!
yes the cardboard box is very ghetto more than ever lol
Haha thanks guys for all the feedback and encouragement for my cardboard box...   :ROTF: :ROTF: :p:  :D
So, about a month and a half later (after I built it), I was just putting in a new video card, turned it on, and got nothing, I smelt a small puff of smoke, and figured that a capacitor had popped..... so, bye bye ghetto box... :D :D
So we got a free dell from a friend, and I fixed it up for her.....
We had a nice little funeral for the the box though.... :yepp: :p: :p: :D
Not quite as ghetto as the cardboard case, probably more doublewide, trailer park, then ghetto.
http://www.xtremesystems.org/forums/...d.php?t=185282
+1 for the cardboard box PC being the most ghetto.
I have two to add to the thread (links are to how-to's).
1. After getting completely fed up with the CCMOS1 jumper on my IP35-E, I went ahead and made an external switch for it. It wouldn't have been so bad if the ancient steel case had some room to put it where I wanted...but noo, it has to sit in the middle of nowhere and look like crap. To wit:
http://i269.photobucket.com/albums/j...eInstalled.jpg
Hey, at least it looks ok on the outside. :)
http://i269.photobucket.com/albums/j...nstOutside.jpg
2. The aptly named Cool Whip mod. From the pics, it's pretty self-explanatory. Works great for down-firing HS's like my Big Typhoon.
http://www.myalbumbank.com/albums/us...oddedPanel.jpg
Like the clear CMOS switch, it doesn't look too bad on the outside. :p:
http://www.myalbumbank.com/albums/us...lSidePanel.jpg
After seeing the cardboard box PC, it's not as ghetto as you can get, but it's close! :ROTF:
Oh man. The box I could deal with (done that myself) but the COOL WHIP MOD!!? HAHAHA! Love it! A little bondo and paint and it would look custom :ROTF:
Here is my cardboard duct for my old gameserver...
http://www.goinglimp.com/gallery/d/24-1/cooling4.jpg
If you look closely, you can see a craptastic heatsink on the TNT2 PCI card down low, being held on by some oddball screws with motherboard mounts. I still have that card, what a beast.
Ghetto minicube to run a projector from a tiny cupboard, projector gets mounted some time this week. Even the smallest mATX cases I could find were too long to fit + power cable.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v6...Picture2-1.jpg
Hehehe...you guys know those stock intel cpu coolers?:banana::banana::banana:ty for a cpu right? Damn nice for a northbridge cooler though! :D
Also, I have this 80mm fan that blows air like theres no tomorrow. I put that on top of my cpu's waterblock blowing air onto the side. 1c temp difference.
I plan to ghetto mod my 8800 gts sometime soon so I can hit 900 core...
some years ago my XP 1700+ asked for more cooling... :yepp:
http://i31.photobucket.com/albums/c3...etona026wc.jpg
geforce 2 MX to... :yepp:
http://i31.photobucket.com/albums/c3...etona010wf.jpg
ahaha looks even more ghetto b/c of all the dust ... nice work
Around 8 years ago I became the proud owner of a new Athlon Thunderbird 1Ghz, I managed to clock this to 1.52Ghz on air. It would boot into Win98se though it wasn't stable at those clocks, (limited by the FSB of the KT7) but It was run daily at 1.437Ghz. These are the images of my "ghetto mod" cooling solutions for both the AMD and the overclocked GeForce 3. :)
http://www.propergander.org.uk/NotContent/1.jpg
http://www.propergander.org.uk/NotContent/3.jpg
http://www.propergander.org.uk/NotContent/4.jpg
That same KT7 RAID mobo and the very same processor is now in my garage, it has been running more or less 24x7 for over five years as a file server. It is still overclocked, but now at a more leisurely 1.1GHz, and with the original pencil mod that I made they day the chip was bought.
OO OOO OO can i show off ghetto mods!
OK up first we have probably my most ghetto mod...
HD rubber mounted (using thick mouse pad squares and double sided stickey tape) hd cooling (old 478 heatsink, put some white generic TIM and put it on there) and HD silencing (carpet padding) ALL IN ONE!!!!
http://teamlosi.andrevas.net/pics/DSCF0073.JPG
Next we have my good ole 6600gt AGP... i loved the thing i volt modded it and had it ocd 24/7 @ 626/1272 (not pictured is the backplate i made do to the card bending)
http://teamlosi.andrevas.net/pics/co...d/P3110015.JPG
Next up is the wifi card that was "propritary" to asus motherboards... turns out its USB and 3.3v
http://teamlosi.andrevas.net/pics/P2220031.JPG
Next is a 10gb maxtor hd that i put an acrylic top on... still works to this day :D
http://teamlosi.andrevas.net/pics/comp/HD/P6190117.JPG
This is from Back in the day when i ust to use an old 10gb laptop hd as my servers main drive.... complete with super quality rubber band suspension, and little mouse pad feet in case of a fall :p
http://teamlosi.andrevas.net/pics/comp/lappy2.jpg
Back to modding gfx cards.... 8800gts 640 with a 92mm fan on it....
http://teamlosi.andrevas.net/pics/ne...0/PC150160.JPG
I have done more ghetto stuff but these are the better ones... http://teamlosi.andrevas.net/pics/smiliey/mexican.gif
@nd4spdbh, little mouse pad feet FTW!!!!! :D  :rofl:
"just in case of fall", haha that got me good!!!! :D :D :D :D
I'm thinking of doing the same thing with my had..... as ghetto as it is. :D
Thermalright HR-05 SLI on a HIS X1300 PCI-Ex1 v.card :D
o yeah, & ram-sinks for the uber-insane-high-clocked v.ram
This is the best thread ever. Its really cool to se how ingenious you guys are. I havent got anything to show yet, but i´m sure I will :)
This thread becomes more epic each day.
nd4spdbh, nice foot (on the pic with the acrylic HDD) :p:
This thread is the only place in the world where people get praised for having more dust. :D
lol..reading this thread is the best time i've ever had running small fft's...the cardboard box and duct tape with optional dust is by far the most ghetto mod i've ever seen:up:
Wow that cardbox box is by far the winner... wonder what could be the next thing around that area...
I've made a kind of air duct to my fathers computer with a soda can... it's so ghetto i've cutted myself twice, it's not even sanded.
awesome thread. I wish I took pics of my old antec, which shocked a couple friends when I took the sidepanel off (behind mobo tray) to reveal a couple 'high density threaded anti-vibrational elasticated sound insulation pads'.... aka a couple old socks to stop the bloody panel from resonating.
There's a bunch of blu-tak and electronic tape jobs running around my case, but nothing worth a photo. The emergency HDD mouse feet and rubber suspension by nd4spdbh gets my vote though!
Can't believe I haven't seen this hugely entertaining thread before. Incredibly clever stuff! Smee, that cardboard pc is/was (so sad) the ghetto-bomb.
edit: ok, my meager twist tie & tape contribution
http://i253.photobucket.com/albums/h.../tapefan-1.jpg
oh you want ghetto mod ? just look at this
a 17 years old boy from Cyprus made one stock Q intel 775 cooler into a chipset pot :)
if you don't understand the Creek Language just focus at the pic's and use google translate ;)
http://www.outofspecs.gr/forum/showthread.php?t=1683
The Greek Way of benching..:D
Some seriously horrifically ghetto mods here :D keep it up!
One of my creations:
http://img518.imageshack.us/img518/9691/shuttle1iu9.jpg
Do you travel a lot conzymaher? ;)
Not sure if this is ghetto as such, but I'm trying to decide how to make my window(s) on my P182.

http://i182.photobucket.com/albums/x...boardside2.jpg

The hole at the bottom is where the dual radiator will be after I get my watercooling set up some time soon.
not so much ghetto heh but that fits in the description of the first post :
http://www.hostingpics.net/pics/1063888800_GT_mod.jpg
http://www.hostingpics.net/pics/1900..._GT_mod_wb.jpg
ram sinks are from a cutted NB sink of a dead mb, stuck with AS adhesive, 80 fan for mosfets and other rams and wb is CPU wb 1A-SL2 with homemade mount
btw, awesome thread this is :D
Love the mount!!!
thanks :D
Another ghetto something of mine :D
http://img134.imageshack.us/img134/6143/cimg6230aa8.jpg
Thats on my 8800GT, temps in low 30's Idle and 42c Load.
Very quiet I might add.
Unfortunately I don't have pics of any of the ghetto mods I've done in the past :(
Radiator shrouds of out cardboard.
Waterblocks held down with zipties.
Geforce 2 GTS w/ a Thermaltake Volcano 7+ heatsink glued to the core.
 thread
an experiment i did with a socket 462 setup ->
1st pic - case made of string, paperclips and 1 rubber band (i made a "case" like this for our flat computer, my flatmates loved it)
2nd pic - a heatsink glued onto the back of the motherboard with speedfan recording the temperature difference when i dropped the heatsink onto the pool of glue (42-38) and then when i turned on the fan (38-36)
3rd pic - a small cardboard box i made, sealed on the inside with varnish, then glued to the back of the motherboard, with speedfan recording the temperature drop when i filled it with water :ROTF:
and then the temp starts to creep back up on the last graph as the water warms up
ugh i must post this... http://www.xtremesystems.org/forums/...d.php?t=112725
The way i used it & builded & ripped ... blowed up after 19 hours cooling 40 liters of water glykol mix... pushed temps on -9 c' ambient were +16 c'
well have good laugh on it :D
this thread is awesome
a few years back i had a ghetto box too :D
i used an old maxtor hdd box, put in a couple of
hard drives, cd rom, and some of fans, the mobo
was sitting on top because the box was too small
ps. i still have the box but the mobo is dead
You guys haven't something this horrifying :)...

http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y23...C_0007copy.jpg
http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y23...C_0008copy.jpg
The mobo is sitting on a netgear box... It does a darn good job of keeping my mobo off the ground :)
This is only a temporary solution as I am modding my Antec 900 as I am making it wire management friendly :)
Edit: Oh I forgot. It has been running 3 days straight. Quite coolly too I might add.
Smee wins ghetto of the month, for real

Maybe I need to put better insulation? DI cooled gpu, water cooled mem and pcb :D . Card worked 100% good after that
lol @ the hanging pc....
Some really creative people here :D My favorites are without a dooubt Cardbox pc, conzymaher's PC (you named it already? i dont know the english word for that :/), and hanging rubberband HDD
Keep em' comming!
