TEK-9 4.0 SLIM 9800GX2 ready

This one deserves a new thread as this container is a bit of a step in a diff direction for me. With the tek9 3.0 and the F1, it was all about getting the tuning right for the loads using diff combinations of mass/surface area respective to what I wanted each container to feel like with NO limits on size/ mass. My 3.0 gpu unit is an awesome unit and this unit is not meant to take it's place. It still very much has a place in my lineup, this new 4.0 Tek unit is my new UNVIERSAL SLIM.
The challenge was to make a new slim gpu unit that not only fits the new 9800GX2 dual pcb card PERFECTLY, but also fit the 3870x2 AND be completely backwards compatible with every other popular high end benching gpu in the past few years. Who wants a unit that will only work on a specific dual core gpu and nothing else right?
What started off as a custom project for just one card has now evolved into the most versatile LN2 GPU unit I could have ever made. :up:
PM for availability..I put together a quick mounting guide with some pics of the unit for the 9800GX2. Couldn't be easier :D

Start by insulating the unit after temp rpobe is installed. I use two layers of insulation tape. Frost king on the first and armaflex on the the second. This way the black foam doesnt trash the unit. The grey stuff comes off clean from the metal.

It was sized to fit two layers perfectly with no issues on gx2

Now that the unit is insualted, time to prep the card. First remove all the heatsink screws then remove this bracket via those bolts on either side of the connectors:

Unfold the card like a pink taco, and be sure to heat-sink the digital vreg chips on each PCB as well as the monitor output chip on other side of gpu.
Coat the usual areas around the core and center of the card front and back with protective coating of choice. I use brush on flexible conformal now.

Make one layer core gaskets and stick them directly on the card. Again, I like the grey frostking stuff because it doesn't trash the card when you pull it off.

Once bracket and screws on face are installed, ready to mount the unit. .

Elevate both PCB's of the card off of the work surface and mount the bracket side of the unit face down on the card

Now flip over the other PCB and bolt down back side with the thumbnuts.

After the back side is tightened down all the way, flip the card over and put the face screws in using the should spacers. These spacer will allow for you to take the screws out without having the remove the insulation and keep the hole lined up from the pad to the card

Now just add two layer square gaskets made of foam tape to both outersides of the gpu and it's party time with the fastest GPU on the planet :D

I've been checking this section hoping you'd post this. Your pot looks great, very versatile. Great work making it work for both sides of the pot with the added usability of using it just for a single gpu. I love your insulation methods too, I follow them to a T and it works great.

The cold creeps across the PCB :) Maybe some ice will form during benching, but if it does, its not an issue. Only melts once the rig is turned off :)

Vince- very nice unit :) Whats the temp swing like under full load, obviously theres twice as much heat being dumped.

Nah there is no issues, You can leave a tiny gap between the mem and unit if you want.

I think F1 will be around for awhile but you never know...:D
Havent seen any F1 clones yet, but I figured after CEBIT one or two might pop up.

It is based on same concept, but modifed for a unit with this size/mass and is designed better to cool from both sides.
Here is the final shipping Tek9 4.0 slim with new bracket. Units are finally ready and going out all this week and next :up: I want to see the top twenty in every 3dmark single card benchmark with GX2's ;)

Just came back from a liquid lunch at work so im feeling like sharing my findings.

Compared to traditional GPU pots, the internal design of the tek-9 series (4.0 slim included) lends itself to making better use of the full copper mass for cooling the GPU face which is located on only one side of the pot (or two if you count the GX2). Traditional pots tend to transfer heat only to (remember that it is heat removal) the other side(s) through the outer edges of the pot/GPU face where the walls of the pot join the face. Tek-9 on the other hand "short circuits" this transfer and hence has awesome heat pulling power due to its simple yet effective design.

i had to put more layers of armaflex cuz ya know.. down here in my country, just a few km from the equator.. things get a little bit sweaty at 90 to 95% humidity :D

and did i mention 35 degrees celcius in my room.

While you are installing the tek-9 4.0, you can definately pick up on some of the clever design features, like the height of the pot above the card edge is exactly two width of armaflex :)

I saw you unplugged the cable in the one photo. I would highly recommend not doing so. The connectors wheren't designed to be taken apart and could very well break when doing so. :up:

harley, actually one of the plugs unpopped itself when i was pulling off the stock cooler. I though i had broken the card until i found it actually snaps in/out like a normal plug. So i figured i might as well pull the other one off and it made working with the cards soooooo much easier installing the insulation, doing the mods, and fitting the pot. Afterwards i just snapped them back in and away i went.

if you've seen laptops pulled apart you'd notice those types of plugs

(well they look like them as i haven't got one of these GFX cards to confirm)

if that is the case they are ok to pull off then

they are "okey" to take apart, BUT the cable seems fragile as hell.. wouldnt recommend taking it on and off. I took it off myself to make it easier to insulate.

I have seen Frost King at both my local (Wheaton, IL) Home Depot and also my local Ace Hardware.

Out of curiosity, what are you using for brush on conformal coating?

Yes exactly...NVIDIA guys told me to avoid removing the connector as much as possible. Maybe ten times of connection/re-connecting it will wear it out.

Homedepot/lowes sell the frostking and the brush on conformal I use is made by MG chemicals and it is a urethane conformal coating.

I have to say after a little bit of testing that Quad-fire is decent for 2006 :D. He hit 31k with default card clocks at 5700mhz when testing platform/cpu with stock cards on air lol.
First row of containers are some 4.0 prototypes that are a little shorter than production version so the stadium seating effect going :D
Maybe next week sometime Andre will put up a nice quad ATI score or two.
