Samsung F1 320GB HDD test!

hartware.de (which claimed the first specs of R700 a few days ago) had the opportunity to perform the first test of the upcoming 320GB HDD from the Samsung SpinPoint F1 series which uses 334GB parts.

According to their test the new lill F1 beats every competition hands down with quiet a gap.

read (avg): 90,47MB/s
read (min): 56,67MB/s
read (max): 113,87MB/s

write (avg): 89,19MB/s
write (min): 56,75MB/s
write (max): 110,80MB/s

ms (read): 13,14
ms (write): 6,08

Who cares about a drive w/ just one of the platters? Seriously, we already know how it is going to perform based on the 1TB drives.

According to ur logic no one would care about hd3870xt, 9800gx2, 9800gt(x) and so on cause we already know how they will perform -.-

320GB seems kinda low...
I think I'll get two 640GB'ers and RAID0 them. A pair should be able to cater my needs for speed and capacity until SSDs become sensible.

humm which would be better only for windows partition keeping a good balance between price and performance?

2 x raptor 74 giga in raid0

access time seems to be a bit lower than WD drive, right?

I have been waiting for this drive for a long time. Already have a Samsung T166 320Gb drive for storage, but want this new one for a game drive. I can then use my 74Gb Raptor as my Windows drive.

Vista is happy as well - 5.9 score, but this isn't astonishing. What is astonishing is 32-35MB/s copying files from partition to partition on the same drive :shocked:

Bad analogy (not surprising who it is coming from).

Those do not scale LINEARLLY.

Adding platters to a drive doesn't improve performance, just adds space. The drive only reads from one platter at a time, and therefore the platter transfer rates are virtually identical.


Therefore, if you know how one of the 334GB/platter drives performs, you know how the whole series using those platters will perform.

So if u wanna get these speeds get the 320, 640 or 1TB version.

Stop hating guys. This is good stuff, I knew about the 1TB drives and it's reviews, but it's still good to see the 320GB review too.

Being single platter has it's advantages, usually more reliable, and it's shame that Samsung did not make this a 10,000RPM HDD to compete in what used to be the Raptor's territory(the Raptor is becoming somewhat obsolete now due to better technology..obviously as 72000RPM's catch up in performance).

To bad they didn't compare it to the 7200.11.

And from my test I can conclude TechReprot is right :)
250GB/platter drive can't sustain 107MB/s read transfer rates @7200RPM, besides scores showed in first post are perfect match for what I'm getting with my drive :)

I would do this now, but unfortunately my main RIG is awaiting new CPU from RMA :( (I bought 9600BE and it was faulty)
It's over 1 week now since I'm without it ...
When I was first testing this drive in DiskSpeed utility it gave me ~108MB/s at the beginning of disk...

I've also googled now looking for some definite answer but what I found was only more questions. No definite answer!:confused:

i know but on various forums people that own the 750GB version and the 1TB version compaired read and write speeds and found out that the 750s are all slower then the 1TBs.

Also samsungs own site doesnt say that all F1s use the 334GB platters but say something like upto 334GB platters

I guess it's just the 334GB platters + a good controller + well configured firmware.

4x F1 @ 10% + iop341 = 500MB/s easy and half the ms

will definetely get 4 of these..

I'm gonna say the reason they have so much wasted space is because they have a high plater failure rate and use the partially bad platters and just disable all of the bad sectors. This way they can sell potentially junk platters and increase profits. Kind of like with the video cards with disabled quads.

Very bad analogy especially as he calls the 3870 an hd3870xt lol.

Its nice to see that they are moving to single platters which should have some kind of performance gain compared multi-platter, pretty small i guess.

However i want to know how does this drive compare to Raptor and all drive reviews should have a Rapor as reference point so we know how far the 7200rpm drives have developed.

IF 500GB and 750GB'ers are indeed 334GB/platter then these would be ideal (if priced right) as short stroked drive is naturally faster compared to full stroked drive.

if all the F1 drives have the 334GB platters then why are they coming with a 250, 320, 500, 640, 750 and 1TB model?

further i have actualy seen benches of the 1TB and 750GB model on a dutch forum and the gap is considerable (all users had the same gap).

Further tech report nowhere has any info or proof on that all F1 HDs use the same platters its simply a conclusion that they themselves made.

HAve you actualy read the pdf file urselves. i guess not cause then you would know that the pdf file talks only about the 1TB HD and not the entire f1 lineup.
The entire document they talk about THIS HD. and they keep compairing the F1 1TB to other 500GB HDs. Further in the key features bit they list the specs of the 1TB disc.

That document does have the name F1 Datasheet wich implies that its a docu about the F1 lineup but instead its just about the 1TB disc.



Dont get me wrong this entire confusion about 250 and 334GB platters has happened on many forums and many people thought that all the F1 HDs use these new platters but they dont and samsung doesnt want to inform people properly about it.

SImple logic
just compaire benches between the 750 and 1TB version and you will notice a considerable gap. further compaire the prices of the 1TB and 750GB HD.
That huge price diffrence (overhere the 1tb costs 195 and the 750 costs 105 euro). So if both the 1TB and 750GB use the same 3x334 platters then how can it be that the 1TB is almost twice as expensive.

Few months ago i also saw the impressive 1TB scores and wanted to buy one.
Then i found a few forums were people were discussing the diffrent scores between the 750 and 1TB and the opinion on all those forums were that the 750GB musst use lower density platters.

maybe im wrong but up until now every review ive read showed that they dont perform the same. and i also havent seen a single word from Samsung about claiming that they use the same platters. the entire samsung site is vague about it and only talks in half assed terms like UP TO.

It's doubtful a manufacture, in a pdf specifically referring to the 334GB platers, would list a family of drives in a table and show the same performance specifications to be the same across the line if the drives were not the same.

Either wat really means nothing to me. Don't have time myself to waste in a thread that in reality means very little.

in the PDF they DONT talk about the F1 lineup they purely talk about the F1 1TB.

i used to work as one of the administrative leads at a legal/complaint department of a big company. and such stupid lil words are key when it comes to legal matters.
Them using the word MAX. cause mean everyting. it can mean it uses 334GB platters wich at max have a usable sapce of 334GB per platter (or less) or that it uses at max 334GB platters and possible also smaller.

Depending to wich site you go the entire lineup says it.
and like XS janus said its just their way to keep everything legal.

And most likely its simply a piece of data that was copied to the data of every HD.

To feck it all up even more:
Most likely Samsung will this year come with the F2 wich will offer 1.5TB and more.

Just to confirm: the 750GB model uses 3 250gb platters and the 1TB model uses 3 x 334gb....

I specifically skipped the 750GB because of this...

I think it's time the HD companies should start disclosing platter size in specs AND on retail boxes, instead of making users run around Googling (or guessing) what it is. I mean the 5000KS is a great example - in the retail space, there's pretty much no way to tell if you're getting hosed with the 4 platter vs. the 3 platter.

No reason we should be playing this guessing game bull:banana::banana::banana::banana:. I think this is why having a totally separate SKU and model, the 6400AAKS is great for WD. I'm just amazed Samsung isn't doing the same though.

So:

1: Faster read / write / copy times
2: Quieter
3: Boot times roughly the same

Reliability, power, heat, peformance. Fewer platters means fewer heads that can crash. Fewer heads and actuator arms means less weight/power to move them, less heat from less power, and the possibility* for marginally better seek time. Higher density platters yield higher transfer rates.

* not always the case for whatever reason.

Got 2 of these puppies in hand now. I can confirm they are pretty quick, and the seek times are not as bad as some have reported....

That, my friends, is right up there with 2 Raptors :D

Heres the proof:

2x 150Gb raptor 42GB partition 16k stripe ICH9R:

Conclusion:

Higher transfer rates than the Raptors; slightly worse (but excellent for 7200rpm drives) access time and typical SATA II ICH9R reported burst rates vs. SATA I ...

These drives are also very quiet in operation, even in full seek / virus scan mode....perfect for a HTPC or a recording studio rig....

Observation: RAID 0 transfer rates are well down on single drive performance so this might be another ICH9R capping issue.... i'm going to retest RAID 0 on a Jmicron onboard and a PCIE 4x Adaptec...

I have doubts whether it beats raptor in real world applications. If you spend your time copying files all day, the STR is nice I guess.

I got mine for £51 each here

I'm not saying that they will beat the Raptors with outright performance, but, for 7200rpm drives, these are pretty damn good and have exactly the same performance as the 1TB F1's...

I'd say from testing these and the 1TB versions that the 640GB version will have very similar performance as well ......

I tested RAID 0 with an onboard Jmicron controller and was getting 130mb/s max and then tested with an Adaptec 1430 pcie 4x and was getting 200mb/s max but it would not let me select RAID array size..... it was max size only. I think i smell incompatibility with my Adaptec :( I swapped out the F1's for a pair of WD 120GB's and could select RAID size straight away so I guess the 320GB F1's have issues with the Adaptec 1430SA...

Well, matrix raid is a feature of Intel :) That is why you create 2 slices in raid 0 - one for system and 2nd for data. System slice will always be faster because it uses outer edge of your drives.

But the Adaptec card would not let me cut up the samsung F1's .. while other drives were ok. The select size area was greyed out...

Can't get confirmed stock in the UK atm. Even so, with 320GB vs the 334GB platters on test here i'm certain the results will be very similar to what i've posted for the F1's... :)

Yep, the models with 334GB platters are:

1TB --> HD103UJ
320GB --> HD322HJ

It seems logical and that's exactly what I thought... Until... New WD 320 and 640 drives turned up. Why is there such a big difference in access times between the two? I suppose this only confirms that it's best to bench specific drives and do not draw conclusions for the whole family based on a specific drive performance.

Indeed I have. Unfortunately the most recent firmware for my card was released way back in june '07 so no Adaptec 200mb/s plus OS partitions for me any time soon :shakes:
