camouflage's first impressions of a godlike QX9650 week 39

:D The "god of overclockes" did listen to my prayers and sent me this beauty yesterday:

Could hardly believe it, but this chip boots 4GHz into WINDOWS at 1.168 volts and runs 32M stable at only 1.200 volts..........:shocked: :

:confused: I'm using "normal" cooling mate - You can buy my watercoolsystem parts for a hand full of $ everywhere...., no chiller, no subzero and this shot was made with closed window(we have -5°C at nite these days) at 20°C roomtemp (I think coretemp 95.4 reads the temps a bit too low.....:cool: ).

This is the exact same chip I have... L739A664
It's definately an interesting batch #. Eva has this chip as well and has had an awful OCing experience with it, I on the other hand am having a blast!

I've had it up to 4.6 @ 1.55v (load) stable enough to do some super pi and wprime runs, but it was nowhere near prime95 stable... this chip is capable of some amazing overclocks, but it's really hard to get prime stable.

I am currently testing at 4.15 (415x10) with 1.47v set in bios, but it drops to 1.4v under load. 2 hours into prime right now...

again, this batch (at least my chip) is capable of some amazing clocks, but stability on the other hand... :(

Same LZ39A664 here. No complaints here, except it needs some volts to scale under phase. I limit mine to 1.6v (1.58v reported) Victor Wang had one die recently but he had volts all the way up to 1.8v.

I wonder why intel isn't releasing these CPU's at a default clock of like 4GHz - it isn't even a problem on the standard cooler :D

so testing with prime:
4.1 - 1.45v
4.2 - 1.51v
4.3 - 1.57v
This is what I need to be prime stable...

I can however run at 4.4 @ 1.5v and do everything but prime. I can run all my programs and games without a hitch, but on prime, 2 cores fail immediately. I don't know how to interpret the behavior of this chip...

Those voltages are quite high. Is that after vdroop or before?

And also, just my 2c about prime: if its not prime stable, sooner or later you will find an application that bombs your cpu, and when you do, you will have the little devil poking at the back of your head saying "see its not stable muahaha". I have found those applications to be either encoders or rendering applications that load all cores nearly 100%. Games usually have mercy on your cpu.

:D I don't use aircooling - on water You can read my temps at the right down corner of my screens (red marked) - add ~5°C, coretemp 0.95.4 reads the temps of the QX a bit too low.

:D You can watch my cooling at post #33 above - the temps are not quite right - coretemp 0.95.4 reads a Tjunction of 100° C but the QX9650 has 105 so You have to add ~5°C, l@@k here:

it overclocks very good but i do need more voltage.

that is not totally accurate!...you can still have a successful run with P95 and fail in playing games and folding...P95 is NO guarantee that you are TRULY stable!

many failures like, BSOD or a freeze can be caused by memory issues, ie, timing or insufficient voltage.

i can tell you are a Prime 95 fanatic!;)

i hear ya. everyone deserves a good chip once in a while and i have had an un-usually long and bountiful string of un-lucky chips...hopefully that changes with E8500/E8600s. you just happened to get lucky with the right chip...nothing could be worse than spending a G on a CPU and getting a dud.

BTW, any idea of what max FSB is on air/water with your beast? i don't think i have seen any screens showing that particularly but may have missed it.

if so that is where your prime stable problems are .

hehe, I don't overclock ram, ever. for me its either the cpu or the motherboard, and it rarely is the motherboard. when you run small FFT, its either the CPU or the mosfets that are bombing, both of which mean I gotta turn it down a notch on the cpu. I never push my motherboard to high FSB levels, I am very conservative I just increase the FSB to open up the memory bandwidth a bit.

so you can see where my P95 fanaticism comes from. if its small fft stable, its stable :)

4GHz how many volts are needed for 8hr P95 stability and the temps?

I hope 4GHz sub 1.45V 24/7 solid is achievable. Worth the price then.

Well there's your luck made: it's all in the stock VID. ;)

Try and do a power consumption test idle/load at whatever speed/volts please. Also if 4GHz is that easy you may do the P95 3-4hr at those MHz, why not :D

You made a good observation about CoreTemps. People are using it whilst its reading lower than ambient with these new chips which is obviously wrong. I saw a review saying Wolfdale was 22C idle air with 25C ambient, LOL. :p:
It would be minimum 10C higher if even that.

hm, that is not true completely. I ran 8*443 for testing and it would pass an hour of small fft but would block at running half an hour of DotA :D

camouflage, man sub 10sec SPi with so little work :( , it really is you get what you pay for, of course there's a bit of luck there.
when you get sober after the new year-party give it more volts and test it a bit more for stability ;)

prime95 gets hotter than cpu tester. :)

anyways still a very nice cpu, i dont like mine.
I still try to find the 24/7 sweet spot, but i doubt i can get anything higher than 3,6ghz with acceptable temps. :(

Case TJ09 (fully stocked with fans), Cooler IFX-14 (with HR-10 cooler).

Room temp is ~24°C (maybe a bit higher).

CPU is @ stock means 333x9 (3ghz) 1,25V (drops to 1,20 under load, damn gigabyte board...)

my qx9650 is really bad, the cpu has a VID of 1,1375... i know other 9650s that have a VID of 1,050. :rofl:

i can get above 4ghz but that sucker burns (70°C + in core temp :ROTF: )

if it would be cooler in my room (20°C) im sure you would see quite a bit lower temps.

Yeah VID and starting voltage will decide what temps/oc/power you get in the end. Early ES guys had 1.1V stock volts and 1.0xx stock VID and were getting high clocks@low volts.

That 70C looks incorrect or its reading TJunction because by 64.5C Tcase (IHS) your core is automatically throttling and modulating 30-50% as a safe guard for damage. QX9650 is designed to only operate safely at a maximum of 64.5C before TCC kicks in and drops the clocks and the voltages down because its exceeded maximum safe temperature and PROCHOT gets asserted. Thats the limit before you get a damaged processor. ;) (see Intel QX9650 specs). Not sure what is happening with Core Temp there.

Also have you measured the VCC using a DMM when you set it in BIOS and after bootup?

my l739A732 has the same vid of 1.1375 but i dont know any other 9650 that has a lower vid than this?

what volts do u use for 4ghz?

under load the voltage is ~1,39-1,40V (bios 1,45 in windows idel 1,424)
But its only spi stable, i think would need another 0,2V to get it prime stabel but that means core temp nearly at 80°C. :p:

You have to remember that the Core temp is not Tcase temp. Coretemp is the hottest spot on the die while Tcase is measured on the center of the IHS. There is no way to measure tcase (apart from modifing your IHS).

Afaik Tjuncion temp is the temp where the cpu should beginn to throttle, i think the cpu will stat with throtteling when the temp reaches nearly 100°C (its not the whole cpu, just the hottest part that reaches this temp).

i haven't measured VCC with a DMM right now, first i need to know where to measure it. :D

I didn't know this. I was trying to find out what its reporting and it definitely looks like its reporting Tjunction, which is the hottest part of the core and is allowed up to 105℃ for QX9650. ;)

Tjunction temp is where the CPU will shut down.
~20℃ below Tjunction is where it'll begin skipping clock cycles and throttling (85℃).

I have a qx9650 with 1.125 VID.

I took it back to stock 3ghz and read 1.15v, under load 1.17v

But it takes 1.41v for 4.0, 1.43v for 4.1 and 4.7v for 4.2, 4.9 for 4.25ghz. each can run prime 2-3 hrs ft or blend. So not a low volt for 4.0 ghz, but seems to be scaling reasonably.

4.4ghz at 1.59 runs prime ok, but temps high so I dont do for long.

:D Thanks mate - more will come soon. Played too much with the DDR3 ref voltage and somthing killed my WinXP (SATA!) - hangs before startup screen appears, have to reinstall now:( .

Will use a bit more moderate timings in future, I found out a certain setting of sharp timings that passes SP32M fine even cause crashes when I use LAN for Internet. Browser shuts down or system hangs, so I think the MAXIMUS EXTREME is a bit weak on the LAN rail............:yepp:

The chip is easy to handle, but board & ram require a lot of work.;)

EDIT: Really unlucky circumstances - last nite we had -8°C here - would have been perfect ambient for my "ghetto cooling" experiments (open window)..........:(

is it your board, ram or cpu that's limiting you? if it's the cpu give it 1.5V and see what you'll get, it won't kill to try ;)

:cool: Think it's FSB limitted - can boot and run 1M 450 - 460 FSB multi 10 & 10.5 but no 32M - tried all possible volts & settings, will do some further tests with multi 11 & lower FSB soon.......;)
