{Review} ~ D.F.I LANPARTY UT 790FX-M2R ~ "Unleashing The Beast"

With all of the bad Publicity abroad on the "NET" with AMD/ATI lately the "New" offerings from AMD have been cast into a Dark & Dismal place but, for those of us that keep the Torch Burning for AMD we see a very promising Future with great things to come so lets have a look at what the "New" D.F.I LANPARTY UT 790FX-M2R has to offer show casing the "New" AMD/ATI Spider Platform shall we?:D

I have decided to Focus in on the the Graphics and Ram Bandwidth Performance Attributes of this "New" Platform due to the Errata 298 Issues surrounding AMD "Phenom" Native Quad Core Processors so in lieu of the Phenom I have selected AMD's Flag Ship Dual Core Processor the AMD Athalon X2 6400+ Black Edition for the review along with 2gb ~Cell Shock~ (PC2 8000) 4-4-4-12 and two of the "New" POWERCOLOR AX3850 HD 3850 to run in CrossFire on the New "Blistering" D.F.I LanParty UT 790FX-M2R/

I will also be using "2gb" OCZ FLEX XLC (PC2 9200) for Testing as well for those of us that need lower Voltage High Performance Ram that scales exceptionally well to be used in conjunction with the Phenom Processors this is a most viable option for those using Quad Core Processors that are limited by Vdimm with the IMC in the Phenom Processor:clap:

Lets have a closer Look at what this new Radical platform holds for Gamers! First off the Gaming in Cross Fire is absolutely Lucid and the Graphics of the New ATI HD 3850's is nothing less than stellar in Imagery and performance! And contrary to all the latest Intel Hype AMD by far is still the better Gaming Platform even compared to my D.F.I Lanparty UT P35-T2R Q6600 @ 3.55ghz it wipes it up on the battle field:up:

First lets start with a Little ~Cell Shock~ (PC2 8000) 4-4-4-12 action to get things Kicked off:D Let me just add for the Record these examples are just very slightly and I mean very slightly just barely scratching the surface of the Raw Power and Potential of this Kick Ass new D.F.I board! If I were to have a processor that would have more overclocking Headroom "My God" I shudder to think of what this board could achieve in Overclocking records:eek: "NO JOKE" this is one Bad Mutha F@cka:worship:

No Tweaking what so ever just primary timings and some voltage adjustment was used so far:clap:

Now some OCZ FLEX XLC (PC2 9200) results Witness the Raw Memory Performance and exceptionally Low Latency of this New D.F.I board in action! Once again just to clarify things I want to show the Raw Un-tweaked Power of this Board and there is no crazy voltage being used:up:

Take Note: as to how well the 2 X HD 3850's Scale in Cross Fire with the CPU / RAM Overclock

EDIT: For those of you with Phenom or soon to be buying one and this awesome Motherboard the OCX FLEX XLC (PC2 9200) 5-5-5-18 is a great set of Ram scales exceptionally well and as you can see it does almost as well as the Cell Shock 4-4-4-12 in terms of latency and not once has it ever been over 2.21Vdimm in Bios during testing!

Here are some more Examples of what you can expect in terms of Ram Performance on this Board. Unfortunately 3540mhz is pushing the envelope with this chip:( The screen shots are merely suicide runs nothing more:D Like I said if I possessed a Processor with Exception Overclocking Headroom say maybe another 300mhz worth I could really make this board dance a jig:toast:

Outside of Motherboardpro.com where I got mine from I am unaware of anyone selling them in the states let alone Europe:( I have actually spoken with Sean @ D.F.I inc San Jose , CA on the Phone and he said they do not expect anymore until after the New Year.

Great review, haven't totally decided yet, but looks like the one. Here's a little bit better price.

For those that are getting this Motherboard and will be using Dual Core on it I urge you to stay away from 12/11/07 Official Bios Unless you have a Phenom!

what have been the NB and SB temperatures on this thing?... wondering if it is necessary to WC it? and why does newegg list this thing as AM2 only... its an AM2/AM2+ board....

The Tempretures are really good on this board .....In 76F Ambient PWM/Idle = 34 PWM / Load 42c NB/Idle = 36c NB / Load 44c

Some OGG Encoding Results.......AMD 6400+ @3.2ghz & 3.5ghz vs Q6600 @2.40ghz & 3.55GHZ on D.F.I LanParty UT P35-T2R :eek:
As you can see even the outdated old Technology from AMD is still a major contender in allot of instances OGG & FLAC Encoding being only a couple and it takes quite a bit of Megahertz from the Rival Intel to show any substantial lead and even then we are not talking but a few seconds difference;)

Bro Esau, this OGG bench looks interesting, but could you please elaborate a bit methodology and results?

No Particular Method:D Justt a side by side comparison on AMD Dual Core CPU against Intel Quad Core CPU at same clock rates all settings are the same in Windows/Winamp for tests:)

Major problem with this mobo and 12/11/2007 (I presume that's American way of saying it's from December eleven)

This is the story:
Vista 64, X2 5000+ (rev F3.)

With all four DIMM's populated (4x1GB@800 MHz) Vista crashes or BSOD failed blaming the ATI Catalyst drv!!

I've tried BallistiX PC2-6400 EPP (effectively DDR2-1000 sticks), and Kingmax DDR2-1066 sticks! Same story :(
Important notice: it makes no difference if it is single 3870 or CF 3870!

This is the major one and we need ASAP new BIOS!!

With Phenom ES 9700 I'm getting constant "C1" errors with all of mentioned sticks + Corsair Dominator DDR2-1066. Even with just one stick populated!
This behavior makes this awesome mobo Lamborghini with just two tiers!

I stated earlier in the thread that users that are Running Dual Core CPU should avoid 12/11/07 Bios as its Buggy as Hell and Unless you have "Phenom" use the 11/22/07 Bios:up: I have made R-Gone aware of issues surrounding this Bios which he has passed on to Taiwan;)

Whooops you have a PHENOM:D Go Back to 11/22/07 Bios anyways I myself Told RGone that Random C1 Errors amoungst other problems were the let Down and Bummer with the 12/11/07 Bios

The New Beta Version of AMD Overdrive seems to be allot more receptive on 11/22/07 Bios then the Previous versions no hard lock just opening it up at least...................SO FAR!!!!

Yea man I'm getting around to all of it please be patient there is a learning curve with all of the settings in Bios and it is a New Architecture and all;)

Why what was the matter with the Intel Fanboys choking on some numbers for a change? They act like AMD is good for nothing and I just proved that aint so! Anybody that anybody that Encodes Music just about always does it in OGG or FLAC that is if you like and appreciate the Best Sound Quality.

Just to let you know AMD does not take advantage of High FSB like Intel does and it Means "MOOT" other than to say I have 500 FSB DUDE!....LOL

What's really annoying about this mobo is that distinctive buzzing sound coming from the coils around memory slots!

It really hurts seeing ultra modern 7-phase Digital PWM on the one side of the mobo, and non-sealed coils from the Jurassic age, by the DIMM's! :(

I don't have that issue with the Buzzing noise and the first board did not have it either.

I've flashed BIOS 11/22/2007, and now all of my 4 GB are working fine, with CF working properly as well as LAN...

I just hope that DFI will ASAP launch new revision that will fix BIOS from December.

Personally the 12/11/07 Bios is a Alpha Bios "Not" Official and they had no business putting it up under that pretense.

Also the New AMD Overdrive Beta does not work properly with 11/22/07 Bios because of the Bios its self.

Mine did the same thing, and I RMA'd it back to DFI. They did not seem surprised at all that I was sending it back for this issue. Hopefully the new one they send me will be fixed. :(

Just passed 10hrs Prime 95 3350MHZ @ those settings lets see if Under Volting is the trick to success with this board:D

Hey just a thought how good is your PSU? The 6000+'s like to have plenty of juice...Sometimes when you dont have enuff Vcore or when the PSU is maxed under load// High Overclock it can cause wierd sounds through the system board/Chokes..It can even Emit this dredded freqency/EMI through the sound card...Sometimes this Higher EMI is what you hear coming from the Chokes/Coils..Chokes that sqeel/Vibrate more from being stressed can be transmitted when there isnt enuff juice for the core. Thuse making the Vcore or power signal dirty under stress/High Oc. When the chokes work more becuase the CPU is eating all the Avaliable power.The lowest Vcore setting for the Overclock sometimes is not good in this case or on a 6000+..

Also Make shure all Spread spectrums are DISABLED. S/spectums will try to reduce power when enabled and create the very issue.This can happen on almost any board...My M2N32 would do this if i did not run enuff vcore through the 6000+, But my 5600+ was fine with the same Vcore !..Its apower consumption thing with the 125watt chips..Remeber thats @3.0ghz...When you Oc it to 3.5ghz it gets worse when slightly undervolted for the Given freqency.

I could be wrong but this is what ive seen after running 3x6000+"s and 2x5600+'s on this mobo :D They are power hungry chips and even when a 750+PSU is used it can still do this...The harder the CPU works with lower Vcore the more likely you will hear the sounds in Chokes and sometimes in your audio signals from the Extra EMI being produced from the Chokes/coils.

Got hosed by Tiger Direct with supposed 2 day shipping:mad: and will be getting the HIS HD 3870 Tomorrow:)
But on a very Bright note: the 12/21/07 Beta Bios Release is really turning out to be quite a impressive bios showing great promise in many respects:cool:

Been away for awhile. Been waiting to see what AMD was doing to do.

OK. This is my question. I brought a 5600+ and a set of Buffalo Firestixs 2 x 1 gb DDR2 pc8000). I am in need of a new motherboard. I want to go with a 790 chipset so I don't have to change again if I decide to get a Black Edition Quad.

Will I be happy with this Board? My last DFI UT 939 SLI-D started to act weid before it took the Opti x2 (forgot the number it was the 1.8 that I was able to oc to 3.0 range) out along with itself.

I sold the OCZ memory and brought what I have now. Can I get a second set of the firestixs and still be able to get a good oc?

I don't need multi video so this would be overkill. Just something to run x10 with Vista. My last card as a XFX 7950. Will a singe nvida 8xxx still run on this board or would it really not make a differnce with a crossfire based video.

Shoukd I wait for a Biostar Tforce 770 board?

Hey guys, new to the forums. Just built my very first rig using this board with a 5000+ black edition and a Diamond HD3870.

I just got it up and running 5 or 6 hours ago, and the only issue I see at this point is an occasional random reboot. I've got 2 GB Crucial Ballistix 1066 MHz (in preparation for faster, more stable Phenoms)that are rated @ 2.2 V, but of course K8 only supports 800 MHz, which is fine. However, the 800 MHz Ballistix are rated @ 2.2 V as well, and BIOS was automatically setting VDRAM at 1.96 V(according to JEDEC spec for 800 MHz memory I'm assuming).

I went ahead and bumped up the voltage to 2.21 V hoping to get rid of the reboot issue. I also found it odd that "random" rebooting always occured while I was in Norton Internet Security. Could Norton be the issue, or is that just coincidence?

By the way, I had some issues with some squealing too, turned out the CPU heatsink and fan just needed the most gentle nudge. :up:

Damn reading this thread makes me want to buy this board for my 6400. It's currently in a gigabyte GA M59sli, and I don't run sli.

Well, I have the wife's computer up and running on this board and a x2 5000be. It seems pretty solid to me so far. There are a :banana::banana::banana::banana:-ton of options in the bios (which is really nice). I really haven't had time to tweak it out as much as I want to, but it seems like this board is an o/cers dream.

I got my Phenom 9600 BE on it's way right now (supposed to get to me on Monday) for my rig so I'll probably have a better idea of what this board is capable of then I'm sure.

Note: got two of these boards just in case you were wondering...one for me, one for her computer.

I am working on some benches with the single HD 3870 and will post up soon:)

But check out the Bandwidth on the top pic ....whoa ........:eek: if I could only have a worthy Processor for this board :worship: considering the Vdimm was at 2.16v I would have to say thats pretty damn good for 7ns 5-5-5-11 -19:up:
