Latest boinc version thread

Last updated: 2-10-08

Figured we might as well have a thread to bump up every time there's a new Boinc version.

Notes: I've listed everything by version and sometimes the same version isn't compiled for all platforms, so just look further down the list if you don't see your OS. Also, if there isn't an unstable version listed for a certain OS that means the latest version has probably been considered stable and is in the recommended catagory.

Latest Unstable/Alpha/Beta:
- 5.10.41(Feb. 7th 2008):
--> Windows X86
--> Windows X86_64
--> Mac OSX GUI
--> Mac OSX Command-line

- 6.1.0(Aug. 29th 2007): This was apparently compiled for demonstration and is no where near complete in terms of V6's intended features, although it does seem to work stable enough for numerous members.

--> Windows X86_64
--> Mac OSX GUI
--> Mac OSX Command-line

- 6.1.8(Aug. 29th 2007): Not really sure what's new with this.
--> Windows X86

Latest Recommended/Stable:
- 5.10.30(Nov. 13th 2007):
--> Windows X86
--> Windows X86_64

- 5.10.34(Jan. 8th 2008):
--> Mac OSX GUI
--> Mac OSX Command-line

- 5.10.28(Oct. 31th 2007):
--> Linux X86
--> Linux X86_64

WCG Version:
- 5.10.30(Nov. 26th 2007): At the moment this seems to be the latest version, although I'm not quite sure how the WCG versions differ from the standard Berkeley releases, it does seem to be a slightly larger installer. Addy mentioned something about the included option to remove the UD agent during installation and perhaps some visual differences, other than that I have no clue how much they differ.

All Versions:
An archive of all previous and current versions are kept by Berkeley at here or here.
There's also a download page that just has the latest unstable and recommended versions here.

Since the Linux clients don't appear to be updated very often, it would be possible to compile your own instead. These links should help how to compile, how to obtain the source code with svn, and the tags directory. I'd suggest checking out a version from the tags directory, that way you create from a known version number(it may mess with projects by having a rogue/invalid version) and don't try any compiler optimizations(they'll only inflate the benchmark, which we don't want).

Just installed it. Liked the new setup screen and the new icon. It won't let me to connect. It kept saying Connection Failed. Weird, but I switched back to the stable version.

Nothing..If you shut down boinc, then upgrade it will overwrite and start where you left off..UNLESS you installed as a service.
I'd suggest version 5.10.13 for windows machines.

Hmmm, I wouldn't think having it installed as a service would make a difference when upgrading :confused:

But like Dave said, it should pick up right where it left of when you shutdown before upgrading, since it'll only overwrite the executable/binary files.

Yea, it does..found that out the hard way when I upped Meshmesh machine from 5.4.11 to 5.10.13 a few weeks ago.

Well, I just went from 5.10.13 to 6.1.0 with no problem, both service installs. Just shutdown boinc and installed right over it, seems to be fine and kept all the previous work. Perhaps Dave's difficulties were due to such a a large jump in version, who knows. Either way it would be a good idea to backup the folder first.

As for is it worth upgrading? I honestly can't say, unless you like keeping up to date with the latest version.

All I see is improved Vista compatibility , but i'm using WinXP

5.10.13 used to be recommended, isn't it? Now it's not even on their site anymore ?

Speaking of recomended, had a long back and forth with the WCG people on versions and the discrepancies between them.
I think I have them talked into recomending that people move from 5.8.16 to the 5.10.13 or better versions.:up:

If you are happy with 5.10.13, then there's no reason to switch.:) I don't think you will see any major improvement in daily production with 5.10.20.

5.10.20 had in been on the site for awhile as a beta. That's usually a sign that it would move to recommended status.

Well, I'm happy with version 6 because I dont get network timeouts and other issue all the other x64 installers had. Now, I have noticed on version 6 it only likes vista and not xp... I couldnt get it to connect to host on xp but installed without any probs on vista:shrug:

Been getting good daily point production with 6.1.0, even on a 32-bit OS. The 32-bit CPU benchmarks are not that impressive, at least on my system. But daily production has gone up a little. Have not had any problems.

6.1.0 is not on the main BOINC download site because it was created for presentation purchases only at some workshop that BOINC holds in Geneva. But it runs fine. No problems with errors, etc.

The date for the official V6 release has not been announced yet. It will feature a new graphics generating program. And you will be able to install it only as a service. BOINC will be eliminating the single and multi-user options.

I had some very annoying problems over the last few days with 5.10.20 on X64 Vista. BOINC would run fine, and all the connections were fine. But when I would turn my computer on and off (like turning it off at night and turning it on in the morning) all my tasks would suddenly be 100%.
Of course that's not possible so they would all account for errors on the WCG site.

VERY VERY VERY ANNOYING.

I've switched to 6.1 X64 now, I hope it solves the problem.

Running 5.10.20

XP64 Blows away XP32...Same settings, OC etc...XP32 =84C/Hr XP64=108C/Hr...

Every observation helps! There is indeed a big difference in XP32/XP64. My VISTA X64 quad got 25~30% higher benchmarks in BOINC over my XP32 quad. Another good reason to install VISTA on both of them..

Note: 5.10.20 on XP32 (the other quad) works fine..

Ack, I was going to mention that earlier today when I noticed it... I get distracted too easily :)

It looks like it's mostly just fixes on the 5.10 code, while they've been doing quite a bit of work on the main trunk code in comparison. I'll update the first post in a little bit.

Oops, looks like they put up a 5.10.21a tag 3 hours later on the source repository. Dunno if the download was updated with any changes they may have made or what's the difference with it, since there are no additions to the checkin_notes.

You may want to try re-benching tomorrow. Sometimes I get really low benchmarks right after installing a new client.

I still use 5.10.13 64-bit version with all my crunchers running on x64 OS. Never had any problems, so I've never felt any need to change.

i found out that the 5.10.13 installed in the programs files folder while 5.10.20 installed in the program files (x86). so i was thinking the 5.10.20 will take fully advantage of the 64 bits. Thats why i upgraded.

I've been running 6.1 and its been the best so far for my lappy on vista x86 and my main desktop on vista x64.

If anyone is having issues thats on vista I suggest running 6.1:)

Geez, it looks like there's already a new version(5.10.22) coming out with a few more fixes. It was tagged just two hours ago, so it should show up on the site sometime this afternoon I'd imagine.

Yep, its on the WCG download page now - has a WCG skin whilst installing, offers to delete the UD agent if you have it installed, and some pretty slides in simple view - but not sure what the other fixes are.

Installed fine over 5.10.20, and the bench went up a tad.

Ah, so I see they released 5.10.22 under the wcg boinc alias instead of the normal format, no wonder I wasn't seeing it. I've been running 6.1 on one of my machines just fine since it came out. Although it did have a spurt of errors a week ago, so I suspended the project for a while and seems to be working fine since resuming.

I keep having boinc losing the clients with 5.10.20 and its screwing up my production (not to mention pi$$ing me off :) )

vista said it wouldn't respond (like immediately) so I get it all closed out and try to repair it. still same thing. so I go and reinstall 5.10.20 and it goes right on but gives me errors. :(
so I restart (again) and still does the same thing. I downloaded the 5.10.24 and installed it, WOOT it took right off and back up and running! I hope it works good. I lost my copy of 5.10.13 so I need to look around for it.

im using 5.10.20 and it gave me a little boost in average on my comp.
even the benchmarks went little up. dont tried 5.10.24 though...

in few days i plan switching from ultimate32 to bussines64.
I was reading some thread about good PPD on ultimate64, but i have access only to bussiness64.

Shame is, my parrents got moved to another flat till they finish the house, so my home server+gateway+other folders are down till... dunno, i have to find place for them.

Grabbed 5.10.24 on Friday night and since then I have been completely stable with no drop outs (compared to the 5.10.20 dropping out every 24 hours)...I have left the machine running this week while I am working out of State again...so will see how it performs without me on it :)

I've been running 5.10.28 on two highly overclocked machines for about 24 hours now. One has XP Pro the other Vista Ultimate. No hangs, disconnects, or any other problems so far.

I still have 5.10.13 on a couple of other computers. I'll switch them over to 5.10.28 in another day or so if the two with it already on them continue to run trouble free.

5.10.20 was nothing but trouble for me. I don't know why it was ever "the recommended version"....

I cant really answer your question but at the same time I can tell you that every time you run a new benchmark it will change and be different on both.. That is common with boinc. :shrug:
Also boinc re-benchmarks like every 10 days or something like that.

Those results are so close that I don't think you'll see any real difference in point production. Also, as someone indicated, you will get different results each time you run the CPU benchmark.

Whetstone measures floating point operations. Dhrystone measures integer, or general processor performance. The name Dhrystone is a play on words. It has no floating point operations, hence it is "dry".

Whetstone measures floating point operations. Dhrystone measures integer, or general processor performance. The name Dhrystone is a play on words. It has no floating point operations, hence it is "dry".

I think I'm gonna' stick with 5.10.28 (for now - til problems show up) and then I'll try 6.1. I don't seem to have any problem with 5.10.20 on a p4ht (i disabled ht though, i gotta use it for programs not optimized for ht).

After an unexpected Vista reinstall I am looking for the right one to install. Upside, I got to try out this matrix raid setup with my 3 raptors - kind of cool.

The latest WCG recommended version available only via the WCG site is 5.10.30 and is not Beta as the version currently is at the Boinc Download site.

This specially compiled WCG version again has a slighly larger installer which includes automatic removal of the UD client, WCG decals and fixes for some Vista issues.

Just an FYI. 5.10.30 has replaced 5.10.28 as the recommended version for Windows and Mac users.

Sometime in the near future, we should see 6.0.XX. This will be different than the 6.1.0 developers version that some here are using. It will have a new graphics engine and will be available as a service installation only. A service install runs all the time, even when no one is logged in. It requires an administrative password to set up. If you don't have a password, just go to Control Panel ---> User Accounts, and create one.

Aww that sucks. I rather run all my systems without a password. 5.10.30 it'll be then :shakes:

The password is need only for installation. All my computers are using the service install which seems to have fewer issues.

A service install acts pretty much like the single-user install. You can still access the BOINC Manager via the system tray, etc. There are three main differences:

- BOINC runs all the time (even when no one is logged in).

- BOINC is listed in the Start menu of the installing user, but not other users.

- The 'Show graphics' command in the BOINC manager will not work for any user. The BOINC screensaver will only show textual information.

The loss of the screensaver graphics is no big deal for me. The screensaver was just wasting cycles, as far as I'm concerned.

Because of the type or research we're/they're doing every result must have a host tied to it for traceability. If you were able to delete hosts they'd end up with work in the database that was crunched by ... nobody. If nobody crunched it, it can't possibly be valid and must be the result of a system error or malicious entry.
It would be nice to be able to hide old host names, though the filter settings in your devices list do serve that purpose.
