A quick 1st look: GA-G33M-DS2R, mATX P35 mobo (pic heavy)

Think it is probably the 1st mATX P35 available locally but I couldn't find much info on it on the www. Just got back and set it up for a quick 1st look,

Look like a very good HTPC board. The blu-ray/hd-dvd means its support HDCP right? interesting :)

I wouldn't worry much about vdimm selection. As long as it goes from 1.8 to 2.2, that's +0.4v, which is quite good. Vdimm pencil mods are real easy to find. So if you set your baseline up to say 2.0v, you've already now got selection up to 2.4v.

Slight increase to the Vcore, Vdimm, Vmch, Vfsb - 1.375v, +0.2, +0.2, +0.2 respectively, these are probably not optimised settings but for now, they suffice.

@xkon, fyi my locality is SG and I got this from the local GA distributor, they are already selling at the shops for the past week though.

According to the screen from MacClipper: it will fit perfectly, no obstructing capacitors in the pcie slot range!

Here's why I think the mobo can do much higher, by eliminating the CPU/RAM factors, going to 450FSB is really no problem. Sometimes I even forget I am dealing with a mATX board.

Yup, no mention of any specific video card needed, it's a standard 16x PCI-e (and 4x) slot. Seems pvhk has also picked up his own board too, looking forward to his findings.

What can we conclude after this quick test:
fsb@400 is now possible in the matx c2d world!
It's clearly an abit f-i90hd killer!
The main drawback is the lack of ratio fsb/ram 1:1!!! :(
You will be compelled to use some very good rams if you want to o/c!This is in particular true when using a c2d fsb800 (as described above)

So, the fatal1ty still have a little advantage over the gigabyte when it comes to o/c a c2d fsb800 (due to this fsb/ram limitation), til gigabyte gives us this damned ratio 1:1!

agree with u pvhk, the missing 1:1 ration still kills it for me, especially since i want to (ab)use a E2160 with it.
How certain is it that Gigaybte can implement 1:1 ratio in the next bios? Maybe i should buy it now and hope for a new bios, or is it possible that we wont see a 1:1 ratio?

It's at least conceivable that an E4300 BSEL-modded to 1066MHz FSB might give you access to the 2.5x/3.0x memory multipliers, no?

Given Gigabyte boards' previous reactions to the BSEL mods I'd imagine it's not nearly a sure thing--might not even POST at all--but it seems like it might be at least a reasonable possibility.

In any case, an impressive board, especially with the potential for future BIOS feature improvements.

But this is just curiosity talking for me at this point; my E4300 can't even take much more than 3GHz at 1.575v, no way it can make use of this board.

By default the 2.0 multiplier is set to "Not-Selectable," but Modbin lets you set change that BIOS default. Same thing with the "1066" option, though what that might do is less obvious.

As to whether any of this will override the default memory multiplier options, I can't say. Might be cool, though.

Argh, I have just returned the test loaner today so can anyone test if a modbin modded BIOS can make it run at 1:1. Looks like I may end up buying one in the end if 1:1 works out nicely.

a german user reported that with his BSEL-modded E4400 the board wouldnt post. After unmodding the CPU the board boots up okay.

Well, that was my experience with the GA-965GM-S2, so it doesn't surprise me. Gigabyte tech support didn't seem all that interested in addressing or changing the behavior either, so...

hmm interesting. if unlocking 2.00x and 2.66x both work, then it's not so bad. Otherwise, it could be that the g33's straps don't have the necessary dividers for running ram at say 533. Much like how later chipsets in the 478 days stopped supporting 100fsb because they removed the strap for it.

That said, it would mean that 333strap would indeed have a 1:1 for sure. However, the question is how to get bsel manipulation to work properly. Hmm..

W!ldGunM@n, who some may remember regarding the F-I90HD mod bios, also bought this DS2R board. he already took a look at the bios and says that theres are a couple more memory ratios hidden, plus a VDimm setting +0.7 Volt

Didn't see the +0.7v hidden setting but the full ATX mobos do have that so guess just have to be patient meanwhile. All I am asking is just the 1:1 divider... :D

Hmmm... I was considering an Abit F-I90HD mATX mobo, but now I'm at the very least intrigued with it...

A couple of questions, though:
1) What kind of price are we talking about? Since it's already on sale in Singapore, can any of you tell us its price? Preferably in USD or €. Oh, for the DS2R version, of course. I'm sick and tired of not having RAID-enabled mATX boards...
2) Were those tests performed with the onboard graphics or without? I'm building an HTPC with onboard graphics, so I'd need to know that... If they are not with the IGP enabled, can you show us the limits with the IGP enabled?
3) Are lower than 1:1 timings available?
4) Is there any HDMI and/or DVI interface?
5) Can anyone tell me the differences between the G33 and G35 chipsets? I'm totally lost on that, and I don't seem to be able to find ANY information about it... I am wondering about DX10 (not that much, it's still an IGP...) and video decoding (read: HD decoding), since right now only the G965 and X1250 chipsets support it (damn oh-so-appealing ConRoe945G-DVI ASRock mobo... lol)

$120 is a GREAT price! The F-I90HD is about that price right now (actually, maybe a little bit more, it goes from €105 to €115) here in Portugal, so this would mean a VERY inexpensive board... Very interesting, considering some 945G boards are still around €130, and only one G965 board is below that price point (by €5, from Foxxconn... :mad:)

So, if dividers under 1:1 won't be available, how does one actually use say 533MHz memory with an 1333MHz CPU? Or those actually require 667MHz memory to run? Anyway, the 1:1 divider is a HUGE drawback... How am I supposed to run a Celly (not happening, I'd go at least with an E21xx :p:) with 533MHz memory (also NOT happening, not with dirt cheap memory like we're seing these days)? It might not be likely, but it IS possible...

Doesn't sound like the g33 platform will support 533 much. It looks like the straps are designed to accomodate 667 at the lowest part. So if you have a 333strap cpu, the 1:1 divider may be available.

If someone is able to program strap selection, then we would be able to set 333strap and then choose 667 for ram, for effective 1:1.

It seems Celerons are history, along with 533MHz-FSB single-core Pentiums and the 805. It also seems just about ALL single core CPUs (that is, except the future 800MHz-FSB Cellys, but those are not retailing yet...) are "banned" from this motherboard... :eek2::eek2::eek2::eek2::eek2::eek2::eek2:

I knew Intel had dropped the support for Netburst CPUs on the Bearlake platform, but I honestly didn't think the manufacturers would do it too... Auch...

I guess that explains why the lower memory dividers don't show up... But 1:1 is still missing.

Well, as far I know (not much, btw... lol), Bearlake chipsets are more or less designed for 1333MHz-FSB and up CPUs (Penryn and future ones), so it does make some sense the minimum memory allowed should run at 667MHz. Those of you who have Asus boards who are ready for 1333MHZ FSB CPUs, just check the Asus Website about that: you NEED 667MHz (or faster) memory to run them...

1:1 with the 333 strap (and up, of course... :p:) sounds fine with me, let's just hope Gigabyte implements it...

The tests shown on this thread are a clear signal that, at least with 800 and 1066MHz FSB CPUs, the 1:1 is NOT available, even when the northbridge changes to the 333 strap.

However, different dividers are often available for different CPUs (and that's clearly the case in this particular board, 800 and 1066MHz FSB CPUs have different dividers available), which means the 1:1 divider might only be available with 1333MHz FSB CPUs, which is a MAJOR pain, one that it would be nice (understatement of the year? :rofl:) to correct. That would also explain why BSEL'ed E4xxx won't boot (the BIOS reads one kind of CPU, and then it requests a different standard strap...), but I'm just speculating on this point (BSEL'ed CPUs not booting).

[EDIT]Ok, I forgot something: have you noticed the 4x PCI-E slot on this board is open-ended? Can you say "mATX Crossfire"? Well, not really mATX, unless you happen to find a single-sloted Crossfire-enabled graphics card actually worth using in Crossfire mode (which means X1950Pro or above, and all of those are two-sloted boards...), but even if an extra slot is needed, that is a VERY sweet configuration... Do you imagine yourselves entering a LANParty with a DIY mini box with this board, two top-of-the-line Radeons and an OC'ed C2D or C2Q? I'd like to see the look on some guys' faces after being thrown around... Cool... [/EDIT]

pvhk lower your multi and max out the board.

As for editing the bios... the VDIMM is at the max it will go. Worse is the bios is a 1MB Award ROM, which the "latest" version of MODBIN6 is incapable of saving edits to. Unless you hope GigaByte is feeling generous, start looking at memory prices for PC2-8000. ;)

For the record, it is a 1:2 divider. You are saying 2:5 or 1:3 are selectable. pvhk it looks like you have it on AUTO running at 4:5? How did you accomplish that?

I see, but your chip is capable of at least 3.46GHz (as shown above) so I want to see if the board is able to do 494 x 7! :toast: The highest I have seen so far is 466MHz.

Tried modifying a CPU to identify itself as 1333FSB and seeing if the 1:1 memory option becomes available.

The P5K Deluxe doesn't offer you 1:1 until you reach 1333FSB so as to offer a minimum of DDR2-667, so could be worth a try...

From what I've read so far, it seems that this board doesn't respond kindly to being tricked with bsel manipulation. So unfortunately, it looks like 333strap cannot be realized unless you have a true processor.

This board cost around $245-250 in Singapore. Thus thats around USD160.

There are no HDMI/DVI outputs. Only the standard analog VGA.

I personally do not know the exact differences between G33 and G35 but based on this short article abt G35

I think the main difference is that G35 supports HDMI while G33 does not.

Btw, if you are going to use onboard graphics for your HTPC you are better off getting the 690G board. ATI is known to be much better for video playback.

USD160? Somewhere around the lines of current G965 cards from Asus (at least here in Portugal, that's the approximate price of the P5B-VM). Not that bad, considering it has all the bels, whisles and whatnots (only the kitchen sink missing, really... :p:).

That is still almost €30 more expensive than the F-I90HD, which is reaching the €100 mark (€110, actually, but its price has tanked in the last two months...), so it will be a tough call. Since anything over 4x333MHz is a little bit too extreme for me, that won't matter much on the OC front, but I'll have to double check on that.

Oh, ISS, I almost forgot. Thank you for the info. In the meanwhile, I downloaded the board's manual. I think there is an optional add-on card with DVI interface (ADD2 card, I think they call it; very common in Intel-based ASRock mATX mobos). At least that's what I think that was referring to...

Please take a look at the first image on this page, on Anandtech's today's article on the Bearlake architecture.

If I understand memory dividers correctly, what this image says is that 1:1 is available with both the 800 and 1066MHz FSB configurations, either with DDR2 or DDR3 memory on the G33 and P35 chipsets. Probably mobo manufacturers will add 1:1 in 1333MHz FSB configurations, depending of "market needs" :lol:.

What it also says is that Gigabyte might have some problems in this ares in this particular motherboard/chipset (since it seems the P35 mobo that Anandtech reviewed has 1:1 dividers) or they simply forgot that setting...

That is, unless of course I'm missing something or I've got something erribly wrong... :p:

dividers aren't dictated by memory at all. I see what hot_fifty is trying to say. Maybe at a low enough fsb, the board will switch to another strap, which has a different set of dividers.

That said, I know for a fact p35 has 1:1 in at least 266strap (of course 333 too). However, I can't say the same for g33 at the moment, although I wouldn't be surprised if it's just something gigabyte is working on

Totally agree on the first part.

I do have to add, though, that according to Anandtech, the G33 also has 1:1 in 266 and 333 straps. It seems that, for some odd reason, Gigabyte didn't implement it...

I agree with the 333strap part, but I'm not entirely sure about the 266strap. Even the p5k which uses the p35 doesn't have 1:1 in 266strap. Hence if spd programming only has 533, it won't even post. However, once you hit 293fsb, you get more dividers to choose from, which assumingly means that it can switch to the 333strap. That said, it makes sense what we're seeing with this g33 board. However, it seems that gigabyte didn't implement the same 333strap switch. And unfortunately, it looks like bsel manipulation to force 333strap won't work on this board.

we received an answer to the question bout dividers from Thomas Bohlken (GIGABYTE-Team germany) sayin that since the board is mATX and not meant for xtreme overclocking Gigaybte does not plan on adding more dividers.

So I guess that a mod bios is the only chance to get 1:1 in the near future...or i will just have to spend some more money on 500Mhz Ram :-(

if someone wants to fiddle with this idea, remove the microcode part of the bios and flash it. hopefully, it'll still boot and worst case good scenario, say unknown cpu. true worst case would be microcode mismatch and no post situation, and since gigabyte is now not socketed, it'd be more or less bricked

If I get the dividers correctly, leaving the setting on AUTO will use a 4:5 divider for CPU's with a default FSB of 200 (E21xx, E4xxx), or 266 (E6xxx) ?

So, with an E2160, which defaults to 9x200, the memory would run at 250Mhz (PC4000). To run it at 3Ghz, it would require a CPU FSB of 333, and 416Mhz memory.. that is not so bad, is it? Won't most PC6400 sticks run at this speed with a little vDimm bump?

I'm considering one of these, as they're only 114 euro here locally, and of course because it's mATX. I don't need killer speeds, 3Ghz is enough ;) So if that will work with PC6400, it doesn't sound so bad.

There are two dividers for 200MHz CPUs afaik. One is 3:5 which @266MHz FSB would require 886MHz Memory Frequence. Other one is 1:2 and a resulting 1066MHz Memory Frequency. So one should be fine with 3:5 and some slightly occable DDR2-800 up to 266MHz FSB. Not enough for me though :-(

Are those the two dividers you can choose other than AUTO? Ogling the screenshots so far it seems that AUTO implies 4:5 with a 1066Mhz CPU. What does AUTO do on a 200Mhz FSB CPU? Maybe I don't understand what AUTO means, to me it seems like it's just another divider, but perhaps I'm wrong.
