Asus Striker Extreme vDroop Mod

To make things easier I thought I'd edit the first post and put the mods there so it's easier to find.
These pencil vmods should work on the Asus Striker Extreme and the P5N32-E SLI.
I've done the vDroop mod on my own board so I know it works perfectly.

One important tip. If you decide to get rid of the mod you can erase it with an eraser but MAKE SURE you do not accidentally rub the pencil lead onto the stuff around the modded resistor.

Tip 2: Do NOT solder or use a conductive ink pen on the resistors!!!! The point is to REDUCE the resistance not get rid of it altogether.

i remember seeing one...i thought kunaak had one in a p5n32-e thread???....maybe the one i saw was for p5n-e now that i think about it.

Its supposed to prevent the voltage from sagging as low. Sometimes your voltage is stable but the droop voltage is not. So if you get rid of the droop u don't have to set the normal voltage as high to compensate for the droop.

Also the extra voltage causes more heat and well u get the picture.

I can't assure you that this one work 100% because my board died before I could test it but persivore help'd me with it and he knows his stuff so I assume that it works. The vcore mod works 100% though.

Woot thanks a ton for this mod. Hmm i dunno if i have the soldering skills to do that tho. I think i might practice a bit or wait for something easier. Trying 2 c if there's a pencil mod if not then i guess i have no choice.

I did about 3 strokes where the green line is with a 4B pencil and now there is 0 droop.

You sure the green line is drawn correct...? Is it supposed to be in the same place as NiCKE^ soldering mod pics above? If so the green line is on the wrong row. It looks like it should be on the row right next to the chip. Please clarify.

I'm 100% sure it is where i put the green line. The spot that is soldered in NiCKE^'s pics is just an empty space.

NiCKE^'s board is a P5N32-E SLI and they're the same so yes it'll work.

Anyone has tested this vmod ?
I want to do it but want to have certain about doing it the right way

Like i said i've done it already and its working for the Striker Extreme.

Some1 still has 2 test it for the p5n32-e. On the other hand if u look at the pics they're the exact same so it should b fine.

This should be the vCore mod.

Its pretty much where NICKE^ has it up there cept you can pencil it if you want to.

Just to double check. Make sure its the resistor connected to the 4th leg from the left on the bottom of the chip.

I personally don't really need a vCore mod cuz my board already gives me more voltage than what i put in the bios.

I think I need this mod as well. Vcore in Asus Probe II is 1,48 but when running orthos it drops to 1,44.

Can you show where on the motherboard this needs to be done. It seems like it's close to the memory slots or am I wrong? Perhaps you can make a larger picture of the motherboard as a whole and point out where it is. Will save a lot of time searching! :)

i did this pencil mod..

on load.. the vcore jump by 0.02 instead thr i have use lesser vcore now. probably going to rub off some extra carbon and hope to rectify it

Thinking of using my trusty conductive pen (CW2200MTP) to do this mod, havn't used since the old days when connecting L1 bridges on my old AMD cpu ;)

Do you see any issues using a fine point conductive pen vs pencil ?

do not use conductive ink, it will just create a bridge with no (or very very little) resistance, shorting the circuit and probably killing something

I assume you used the 4B cuz it's harder led with more graphite making it more conductive then say a 2B or HB ?

Yea I've heard you can use different pencils but i used a 4b.

The only difference would probably be the number of strokes.

If you wanna be exact u can use a multimeter and test how much resistance you've taken off.

And yea like pyro said the point is to take away SOME resistance NOT ALL so the circuit pen is a no no.

I don't remember the initial resistance but you're supposed to take 100k off the vdroop and 50k for the vcore.

after a few tries of rubbing excess pencil or applying more, i manage to get it almost 0 or 0.01 droop which is stable for me att.

BTW I noticed in another thread you said you were setting like 1.5x to get something like 1.4x in bios.

If that's the case use the vCore mod and it'll get you the voltage you put in the bios.

vDroop is only for the voltage fluctuation between load and not load.

Based on your calculations, how many passes did you make and what model of pencil did you use ?

n00b qtion:

What makes de vcore mod and vdroop mod? :D

Vcore mod is so that the voltages you set in bios are closer to the actual voltage the board puts out (and you can increase beyond bios voltage limitations)

Vdroop is to eliminate or reduce the amount of voltage difference seen on most asus boards (:slapass: ) between load and idle.

oh...yes i've noticed .02v droop typical between load and idle....(no pencil mod)
as for when i put pencil on the vdroop resistor (or whatever that thing is) i couldnt get the same oc at the vcore i had before????

what does the pencil mod for vcore actually do? shunt more v's to core ? i dont know?

i currently can get more v's than i need because cpu heat is the limiting factor for me atm (without the p mod)....but i thought that a droop mod might lower the actual volts required to set the vcore at .....0.01 to .02 volts isnt going to help me with my coretemps...
although i'm sure pmods would be helpful to many who have bad droop and or need more vcore.

That's a given, however it's informative to know how many passes others are doing to successfully complete the mod.

Im a noob

I just bought the pencil 2B to make this mod. I have marked several lines over those two resistors and nothing changes. I still have 1.45000 in BIOS and 1.42 in windows. 1.42 in idle.

Im a suppose keep marking them or draw around them or do something that Im not doing?

I recommend using the 4B pencil and follow the instructions left in previous posts by others that have successfully completed the mod.

Well, I dont think I can get teh 4B pencil right now. Although, I kept trying, my Vcore voltage was raising to 1.44v, still going down to 1.42v sometimes while doing 3 mins orthos. Decided to turn off the pc and keep marking, now it will stay in 1.42v. Gonna try couple more times.

BTW, is the vCore resistor suppose to have more marks than the vdroop resistor or the other way? or should I just mark both the same?

Im tired now. Couldnt get my BIOS voltage (1.45), sometimes after I mark the resistors it will show 1.44 but it would go down to 1.42 every 3 mins for like 10 seconds.
I think I will be getting that 4B pencil. I also heard that 8B pencil is the best for pencil mods. Which one should I get?

Also, I have a question, Am I suppose to make the pencil marks really dark? I mean applying some strength to the resistor so the pencil mark will be really dark.

You better be using a multimeter to measure those voltages or else you might as well just throw those readings out the window. BIOS readings are total crap.

A multimeter is like $20 and is really easy to use. Stick the black end in the black molex wire and touch the red end to the vcore reading point.

Also I have some questions regarding the vdroop mod.

1) Do I have to make a darker mark on either the vcore or the vdroop? or it doesnt matter?
2) How dark or strong do I have to make the marks on the resistors? Do I need to apply some kind of strenght?

Finally, what is the initial resistance of the vcore and vdroop resistors? this questions never got answered.

You can't go by how dark the line is or anything like that, you have to use a multi-meter to measure what change you made penciling if you don't want to seriously risk killing your board. Get a meter and you can answer almost all of your questions. The black probe/lead on ther meter needs to be grounded, then you use the red probe/lead to check whatever your measuing.

A molex connector has 2 grounds, a 12v line, and a 5v line. Red = 5v, black = ground, and yellow=12v. When measuring voltage, you need to ground the black end and then use the red end to find the voltage. What this does is find the potential difference (aka voltage) from whatever you're touching to the ground. It's very practicle to stick the black end of the multimeter into the black female molex connector to ground it. Then you just need to worry about the other end making contact.

To measure resistance, you need to turn the system off and disconnect power. For the vdroop mod, just measure the original resistance (its 129.5k ohms on the P5N-E) and take it down in 10k ohm steps until you dont have vdroop anymore (smaller incriments as you get closer to near 0 vdroop). Don't worry about how hard or soft to make the marks...just make marks until you get your desired resistance. For vcore, just measure the original resistance and take it down in small incriments until you get your desired vcore raise.

It usually helps a lot to have the system out of a case.

Well, I'm not Kobalt, but I'll still answer you that question. The resistance will go down because that's the only possible consequence. What you do when penciling a line next to the resistor (or whatever part) is creating a resistance in parallel. The rule for parallel resistance is that the total resistance can never exceed the resistance of the smaller (in value, not in size) resistor. That's to say for example, when connecting a 10 Ohm and a 10000 Ohm resistor in parallel, you'll always get a total resistance lower than 10 Ohm. To be exact, it'd be around 9.99 Ohm in the example.

BTW, the formula is:

R(parallel)= (R1 * R2) / (R1 + R2)

Increasing the resistance is only possible when adding a resistor in series. In practice this would mean cutting the trace and reconnecting it with a resistor.

Well i was gone for the weekend so i couldn't really answer your questions. But it seems like you're pretty much set now.

One thing I do have to mention though is that having a lower B pencil does two things. First its less conductive so you need more and second is that it tends to be less sticky so it falls off as soon as you rub it on the resistor. This is cuz the surface of the resistor isn't exactly ideal for marking on.

I definitely suggest using the multimeter but just to give you an idea, when i drew on the resistor it pretty much looked covered with dark pencil lead.

Even when I do like 10 marks, the resistors look shiny but they dont seem to get fixed. I can mark them 10 more times but they would not get fixed neither. I think I will have to get the multimeter just to make sure im not messing up anything.

I doubt it...I took my resistor down from 130k to 9.75k and I still get .02vdroop (although it is down from .07vdroop).

yea...i give up. If this was for my computer it would be going straight back to Asucks. Its for a friend so I don't care that much although im kind of a perfectionist.

yea i know wut u mean. I couldn't get my buddy's e4300 to run over 3.3ghz and i was so pissed off. I was so adamant that it would hit 3.6 but it was running too hot to get there. In the end I just left it at 3.3ghz.

BTW slim you might wanna try taking off the vCore mod and leaving the vdroop. If you say they're affecting each other then stick with the vdroop cuz you can always just enter a higher voltage into the bios instead of a vcore mod.

Hi guys , i have a P5N32E SLI , i measured Vcore and saw that real Vcore is just below 0.02v than Vcore was set in Bios. Ex : I set 1.425v in Bios and real Vcore is 1.40v in DMM

And i have no Vdroop at all. I dont care what monitoring in Asus Probe.
So i wonder how do you guys know real Vcore ?

What is an acceptable amount of VDroop in you minds?

Also is having a negative VDroop bad? As in voltage goes up under load

Anyways I had a VDroop between 0.06 & 0.07 Volts so that seemed pretty stupid. I did the VDroop Mod & reversed teh problem so i was actually gaining 0.02V under load. So I rubbed some off & now I'm getting 0.02 VDroop atm.

The reason i ask about the negative VDroop is because it would seem like a good thing to me if i can run VCore at 3.5 V which is stable until I run stress stuff. But the CPU takes up to 1.425 before temp becomes a prob.

I have a tiny bit of negative vdroop depending on what voltage I'm at. There's nothing wrong with negative vdroop as long as its not ridiculously high.

Before I was requiring 1.425V in bios to get 1.38V in probe II

Tried the vcore mod 1st expecting if I reduced the resistence I would get a closer vcore to what was set in the bios - the exact opposite occured when i reduced the ohms with multimeter and 4B. So I used ethanol to get it off.

I then tried the vdroop mod, as the 1.38V would drop to 1.36 with 100% load.

Dropped the resistence 100, (which was 3 strokes with 4B) and amazingly, now I can lower the bios vcore to 1.3825, probe shows 1.38 and it stays at 1.38 on 100% load. Managed to drop about 5C off the processor by reducing the vcore. Which I will now use to hopefully squeeze a few more hundred Mhz out before idling at 43C again and load to 50-51C.

Hmmmm seems like there's something wrong with the Vcore mod. There are a few ppl who tried it who said it didn't work. If that's the case then I'm gonna take it off the site. For that mod I followed what Nicke put on that post but it seems like its in question.

I'm gonna take it off for now and review the mod again.

That mod doesn't seem that useful though since we got more than enough voltage settings to fry your cpu's anyway.

Yeah. I've been monitoring my temps for the past month. To get a stable overclock of 3375Mhz on my E6600 I needed these setting (Orthos >12hrs)

SPP - MCP 200
Unlinked
FSB 1500
DDR 875 4-3-3-9 RRD 5 RC 18 WR 6 WTR 8 RFC 38

Vcore 1.425 ( Probe II measured 1.38)
Mem 2.075 (2.13)
1.2V 1.3 (1.36)
NB 1.4 (1.44)
SB 1.55 (1.58)
CPU VTT 1.4 (1.34)

With the Vmod Dropping the resistence down at 10 at a time, the Vcore setting in the bios and probe actually decreased further so at settings 1.425 and with 50 off the resistence the computer was unstable and when got to windows probe measured it at 1.28V (well below the setting of 1.425)

I removed the vmod with ethanol, and tried the vdroop - which I didnt really think I needed. It was about 0.02 which I thought wasnt too bad.

Dropped 100 off the resistence, and found when the vcore in the bios was 1.425 that was actually delivered in probeII. So I dropped the bios setting to 1.39 which I had found was the previous stable settings. And it came out at 1.39 in probe II also. The 0.02 vdroop had also resolved.
I dropped it to vcore to 1.36 then - and found it was still stable with orthos for >12hrs.

I have since reduced
1.2V from 1.3 to 1.2
NB from 1.4 to 1.35
SB from 1.55 to 1.5
and CPU VTT to auto

Also tightened the subtimings from the great guide on this site called
680i ram timing guide - And it now runs stable, and 5C cooler.

I also got my memory read above the 10000MB/sec for the 1st time :))

Tonight I am going to attempt increasing up to FSB of 400x4 (1600) as previously I have never got a stable system at 3600Mhz and to get it stable I was scared that I needed too high vcore and idle temps were in high 40's with stress gettings close to 60C

I also monitor with the striker optional themistors bluetac'ed in place

1 ram heatsink temp (OPT1) 37C
2 NB heatsink temp (OPT2) 43C
3 Middle HDD in raid) (OPT3) 27C

Core temp currently is 39C with ambient temp 23C (idle)
In probeII Mobo temp 31C
CPU temp 27C

Anyone know a way of better cooling the northbridge - or does that elaborate copper heat pipe have to entirely come off?

The only real way to get that NB cooler is putting a fan on it and even that doesn't help that much.

If you really want to cool it the best way is 2 take that entire heat pipe system off and slap on a thermalright hr-05. That would mean that you'd have 2 get something 4 the mosfets and south bridge though. You could try cutting the heat pipe and reusing the southbridge and mosfet coolers while only changing the NB.

Cheers, I may give it a go when I build up the courage. Maybe once the board is past its warranty phase. 43C on the NB is ok though would you think?

Currently have 4x 120mm sidefans in a stacker 830 blowing inwards onto the motherboard. 1x 120mm blowing in from the top 3 5.25" bays across the ram and into the zalman 9700 NT, with that exhausting into another 120mm fan out the back of the case, with another 120mm at the top of the case blowing out. The 3-in-1 hdd rack with 4 hdds (3x 400gb in raid0 and 1x raptor 10000k) fan blowing out the front bottom.

I think the airflow is pretty good....tried to watch some smoke from a candle move though the case and it flows through so fast I cant keep track of it...but appears to be no dead spots.

For the time beeing i have all that area insulated for cascade use, so that is a pain in the ass to remove to put a read point .
But if there is no other choice :)

Drill a whole in the mainboard-tray, remove the case backside and read from for example a vcore cap on the boards backside (the caps are THT, so there are contacts on the backside). ;)

I did a little test reading the vcore off of the coils. Mind you the multimeter i used wasn't top of the line so i'm not 100% sure of the accuracy but the asus probe reading seemed pretty off.

The vcore in probe was about .05 less than what i got off the coils.

I had to lower my CPU VTT from 1.55v to 1.5 and vCore from 1.5625 to 1.475 in the bios. Temps have dropped by about 4-5c.

it looks like asus boards have very similar voltage circuit or is it just me thinking it? excuse my ignorance i have no idea about electronics , just i noticed my board have a similar design

Can someone please confirm where to read vcore with a mm on the board please? Is it at any of the two points on the green line in the picture?

Vcore is read at any of the legs on the coils which surround the socket.

I plan on having a professional help me mod this board but I want to make sure I do this correctly. I am not very happy with my Q6600 G0 overclocking abilities and would like to fix this board permanently. As far as soldering on this board, from what I understand I need two VR Pots, one at 50k to ground and the other at 100k to be soldered at two points on the vdroop?

Just need to clarify a few things... the vdroop mod works 100% but the Vcore mod is still under question?

How exactly do I make my board more Quad Core friendly? I understand that the eVGA A1 board is the only one that is truely free from this plagued performance?

I have a P5N32-E SLI fyi, i don't want to buy another board, I love this one.

I'm not sure how much performance you are looking for but I'm running prime at 3.6 on my quad. The Striker is a way better board than the Evga, it's really the dang 680i chipset that doesn't like the quads.

Heres a good thread with bios settings. You should at least be able to get 3.6 stable, granted I was running 3.8 on my IP35-Pro but I figure 200mhz for another 8800GTX is worth it to me.

PS1. I observed that when you select 1.6 voltage in Striker extreme bios it is in fact at 1.54 ... this is the problem that pencil methid should solve?
PS2. I observed an anomaly in Vista with q6600, at 3Ghz the processor in idle pendulate between 0-5% and at 3.25 it pendulate between 0-1% rarely 2%. And the performance improvement is massive comparing with a e6600 when you overl:banana::banana::banana::banana: in same percentage . One thing is sure, it worth having a poerfull cooling system cause this CPU has alot of potential.
For today and near future - 12 month - it is verry powerful for the money .

This mod is to fix vdroop. Vdroop is when you're voltage is at lets say 1.45 and it drops to 1.40 at load.

This is supposed to compensate between the differences in voltage at load and idle.

I'm getting a Striker Extreme too and I'm going to overclock my Q6600.

I'm also want to try this mod.

To get it straight:

- I need a B4 Pencil
- Use the multi-meter to test the voltage
- With that pencil, draw about 3 lines on top of the 2 resistors
- Done

1) Is that correct?

2) And the image in the startpost if from a Asus P5K, has the Striker Extreme the same locations of the resistors?

3) Both mods working on the Striker Extreme?

I haven't tried it myself cuz i don't have a striker extreme anymore and no one else has posted about it.

The vdroop mod is tested 100% to be working though.

The image in the start post is not from a P5K. The P5K wasn't even out during the time that pic was posted.

But what motherboard is the one in the image?

Can you solder the wires to the back of the board instead of the top? Seems like it would be easier that way...
