defective hard drive?

i have two hitachi 250gb desktar. one master, one storage.

the thing is.. everytime that i have the 2nd hard drive.. i have boot problems.. unplugging the hard drive will solve this problem.

and later last night... the hard drive formatted itself.. yeah! all files gone...

after formatting i have

used 72mb (after formatting)
free 232gb

is it normal to have that 72mb even though i dont have anything in it..
and how about that boot problem.

storage should be slave set the jumper at back of hd
if its a sata drive you dont have to set anything
