I don't know what im doing wrong. I connected the green wire and the black wire with a piece of fan wire, and my main 120mm psu fan spins for 1/2 a second then stops. My psu is the hiper 580W and i am trying to leak test my system :( do i have to connect up the motherboard (i hope not).

thanks

well I did, the only real problem is the startup process which uses the most current (generating the most heat). I was able to get to desktop with a lot of air in my loop. Although I couldn't do anything but internet I was thankful temps were not that bad. Just make sure you get water in your pump 1st before you do anything. I re-opened the end end of the tubes that lead to my rad inlet (which lead from the CPU) and outlet (which lead to the T and pump) and added water into them (as that portion of the loop was bone dry) well. I tried to add water in the rad but it only fell to the floor. Although I got mine started up with no problem I decided to turn the system on to see if I could get things started and, was able to do so without any problems. Then be ready (with a funnel in hand) to add distilled water into your T. I had to fill my t 3 times before adding water incrementally. I can't say this will work for you 100% though. Do this at your own risk.

Edit: before you do that go to Staples or office max and get yourself a box of "JUMBO" size paper clips. Then go home cut 1 to length and put so electrical tape around the portion that you hold it with. Then insert the ends into the green and black wires.

dunno mate, seemns some PSUs dont like being hotwired... my enermax f.example just ticks. i have an ancient 350W PSU i keep around for leak-testing.

Just connect a cheap harddrive or a cd-rom to it, PSU will work when you at least have some load on all the rails such as 12v, 5v (circuits use them), 3.3v (doesn't matter that much).

I had a 350w high power PSU, it won't boot if I just connect a 12v fan to it, but after I put a cd-rom it there it worked like a charm. Hotwire isn't a problem, just load it.

I just use a cheap 300w PS also so that if anything were for some reason to mess up, I wouldn't be out anything. I would however use something thicker than fan wire to connect the leads as fan wire is very thin and may not be making good contact.

i did also try a paper clip...

however i do have another psu i can try, so i will give that a go. if not then i'll try loading it with a cd-rom. if not then i'll cry.

thanks for the help

I once had a no name psu that wouldn't start w/o 3+ fans.

But your hiper psu should start, at least my hiper 580w starts with just one yate connected.

hey just to make sure your hitting the right pins. Not trying to insult your intelligence just better safe than sorry

p.s. it took me 6 hours to draw this freehand with my tablet pc :) (not!)

lross78550: Sometimes the power supply just needs a load for it to operate, and not just hitting the right pins to jump start it...

At any rate, I also had a power supply that wouldn't do less than 2 dvd burners and all my case fans. It was pretty sad, but needless to say, it was a strong power supply.

Make sure it's the right pins.. and also.. a stupid question... you are HOLDING the paperclip in, right?

is sorted now thanks guys, yes i was leaving the paper clip in and i was using the correct pins, it seems that the psu didn't like it. i found a psu that does work.

thanks

just for others to know.

if you have any old hdds. keep them around for this purpose. works great.

im building a small circuit with some resistors to load the 5v rail on my fan psu because without load on the 5v, 12 only around 11.65. with load it goes up to 12.3

I have the same exact PSU (Hiper Type R 580 Red color) and it works fine being hotwired. Doesnt need a load or anything, just a simple hot wire so im not sure what the problem was. Your contact probably wasnt good enough.

My OCZ 520 powerstream seems OK being hotwired, but my FSP 700W Epsilon doesn't seem to like it much. I think that PSU needs to see some sort of load on all of the rails for stability.

yes however i am using the same exact piece of wire to connect the psu that works. I wiggled the one about in the hiper and it still made no difference.

wierd.

Did you try plugging some random hardware in to give it a load? Such as your pump and some fans?

no i didn't, however im not going to try now as i have a working psu :)

is it ok to plug 3 HDDs and 1 dvd-writer into a single cable from the psu?

thanks

As long as the cable has 4 separate power connectors and you aren't using any splitters, it will probably be okay. If possible try and break it up and avoid using splitters for hard drives.

it is a modular psu and i just daisy chained lots of splitters :)

i guessing i should probably split them up - are 3 HHDs ok?

thanks
