View Full Version : Macbook Pro 15" ?

Would a Macbook pro be a worthwile investment-

i was thinking of getting the basic 1.83 GHZ one with 1gb of RAM ( 2x512) and a 7200rpm 100GB HDD-

Will this give a good performance boost over my currrent 1.7GHz Centrio Laptop or not (thinking of booting onto Windows XP)

also, why is it cheaper to fly from the UK to america, spend a night in a hotel, buy a Mac book pro with the bove specs and then fly back?

is rediculous.....

about the price - same here in israel - don't worry about that ....
about upgrade .... dunno why you wanna invest in a macbook to run xp ...
buy a laptop that comes with xp on it and fully support it ...
If buying a macbook - only for OS.X !

no, the point is that my family at home all has macs (2 x Imac G5s and a Powermac G5) so its eaiser to use, but for school, XP is better,

Is it posible to boot up XP sometimes, and Os X othertimes?

yeah - apple released that software that enables dual boot ....
can't remember it's name - but im sure you can google it ...

Boot Camp

You'll want to virtualize Windows though....much faster (for some, VERY odd reason)

what?

errr stright up windows runs a 39sec spi...which to me sounds pretty good for a laptop....your telling me if i virtualize it can do better than that?

That sentence is a thorn in my eye . . . really. I wonder how anyone can say that!

I can understand it if you have to use Windows only applications in school.

Absolutely love my MacBook Pro and I wouldn't even consider using Windows XP over Mac OSX. My desktop is Windows-based but I find myself using this MacBook Pro more and more.

39s Super Pi's are a thing of the past :D Check that link that Popo posted, it's got a slew of benchmarks that I ran on my 17" MBP.

I get 32seconds super pi with my 1.83 ghz macbook pro. The problem is you get slow super pi's is your battery setting isn't set to ALWAYS ON. If you don't have it setup like that, or at least on home/office, it will clock down your cpu to 1ghz instead of 1.8ghz thus sucking up your super pi and other benchmarks. I have a macbookpro with 1.83ghz and 1gb of ram and it runs great (other than it being really hot.)

If your MBP runs really hot you should follow the dissasembly guide at ifixit.com and strip it all the way down and yank out the logic board then reapply AS5. Luckily enough mine doesn't run hot enough to have to render doing that. But before it came I read up on all of it just in case I had to.

I say within an hour you can have it running a good 30* cooler.

Just got my macbook pro (2.16Ghz / 1GB / 100GB 7200rpm) this morning. Love this machine so far, and I'm also beginning to remember how much I like OS X. Went on a windows-only binge for several years because I wanted a gaming desktop that cost less than $3000 and actually ran more than three games...

Anyway, just went out and found some nice temperature-monitoring software (silly of apple not to inlcude this as a utility, I think) and discovered that my cpu is basically idling at ~60C! I know it's a thin machine, and my Acer Travelmate 4500 gets *up* to the sixties under load, but this machine is pushing 70C under partial load (installing world of warcraft... not exactly a super-demanding task but I guess enough to increase clockspeeds). I'm actually seriously considering wiping whatever crap tim apple put on the cpu/gpu/nb off and putting some AS5 down there... but it's a lot of work getting down to the underside of the motherboard... anyone here done it and willing to share their new idle/load temps?

I assume better heat transfer might also allow me to clock the gpu back up to "stock" x1600 speeds under windows without melting anything?
