I've been wanting a good gaming mouse for a while but my friend says it's not worth the money for a G5 and my other friend says I should spend the money and get something that's really good. I can't decide if I should save money or get the g5 with laser tracking and more features. What do you think I should get?

Go for the G5
one of my lan buddies has an mx518, and after trying both, i prefer my G5
(he also wants a G5 now :D )

(my previous mouse was one of the standard m$ optical mice)

Before you get either one, I would first look into razer. Logitech is great for people with big hands, but if you have small hands like it it will make them hurt after a while. Razer makes mice with basically the same specs, but they are smaller. Also work for left handed.

well i think i do have pretty big hands, the microsoft optical mouse i have now is pretty small, my friend has a razer but it's a little small so i think the logitech would be a better choice

G5 is just a butchered up MX518 with a weight cartridge, a laser and a missing button. MX518 ftw. That missing button (the explorer back button) is so useful to bind stuff to in games..

EDIT: The ONLY bad thing about MX518 is the weight, which can't be removed, as the Copperhead vs MX518 thread a couple of days ago pointed out..

Go with w/e is more comfortable and fits your style. Though a mouse takes some time to get used to. I have an MX-310 for gaming. I never buy Mice that cost more than 30 bucks, and they never seem to stop me from owning anyone. ;)

The weight is removable on the MX518 if you have to take it apart. I didn't like the plastic texture of the MX510 I had. I'll probably buy a G5 once they go down to the $20s.

If you want a mouse for gaming don't risk wireless, too much to go wrong during crucial firefights :p

I agree entirely with MoPx, I can't live without my side buttons. I've tried the G5 and I would go with the 518, but only because of the side buttons.

i would go with the mx518 as well. i have an mx518 and my friend has a G5. the G5 is good don't get me wrong but the lack of the extra side button throws me away from it. Sure the G5 has 400 more dpi than the mx518 but u can't a tell a difference at all. If u really want to see either one really perform then go with a high quality mouse pad. I use a func pad F10.s 17x11 and its godly. My friend has a Steelpadz 4d and it works just as well. The G5 also has a rougher texture for the rubber grips on the side, but it doesn't really help u grip it better or anything.

Eh, I personally have had both and prefer the G5... I just don't use the side button enough to care.

I use a G5, and it is a very nice mouse. Enough buttons for me, i really like the weight cartridge because on some surfaces you need a heavy mouse and on some you need a light mouse and when you are doing different things you can customize it to your needs. Then also the 2000dpi, and laser technology. And the braided mouse cord is awesome.

NO, the weight is not removable on MX518's or newer revision MX510's! We tried it in another thread, and couldn't find the weight!

As masterofpuppets said, MX518 weights are NOT removable. This makes the MX518 very heavy. If it wasn't this heavy it's be a great mouse, but right now it's just too darn heavy to appreciate it. I'd say get the G5 and remove the weights. (I have the MX518, but have never tried the G5.)

Currently the mx518 is 50usd and the g5 is 80usd (i think).
I would get the g5, i love those weights

I don't think 400 extra dpi, braided cord, adjustable weights and a MISSING button is worth $30...

G5 FTW. in game res. change plus custom weights, and coz of tis size it forces a more natural hand posture so doesnt cripple your thumb after 8 hours of quake4.

Another option... Logitech G1 (http://www.logitech.com/index.cfm/products/details/MY/EN,CRID=2464,CONTENTID=10748)

i've tried the new razer copperhead, mx518, and i have about (3) mx510's ... i just ordered a G1 from china (they dont carry them in U.S) ... this is a much better mouse than any i've used so far, especially for gaming. I like the size and i like using my fingers more, and less my whole hand because of the smaller size (my hands are not small btw) ... I havent tried the G5 yet, i didnt want a mouse with all the sensitivity adujusts, weight adjustements , and unecesarry Bs...

well the weight thing is a bit pointless although it is effective, it does change how the mouse tracks, i already bought it if you didn't notice from the picture and i do notice an increase in precision - the adjustable sensitivity is nice tho especially for sniping where the lower sensitivity gets you better accuracy

You should consider a Copperhead, I like mine a little more than my Diamondback and a lot more than my MX510.

I used both the Copperhead and the G5 for two weeks in January. I decided to go with the G5. Good luck and happy fragging!

i bought a copperhead a couple of weeks ago and now hate it, it's too narrow for my hand and makes it ache after prolonged use
just ordered a G7, hope it's better than this thing

My G5 has never failed me, its so much better then when I had a microsoft optical mouse.
It took some time to get used too.

I have the Copperhead and it is a great mouse!
I would consider the RAZER mice... the Copperhead is not that small. I think it would fit very good to a big hand (fits like a glove to my quite big hands).

If not the Copperhead, go for the G5.

I have both

G5 have 2 drawbacks:
* 1 side button
* crappy scroll wheel, 3rd button

Other than that G5 feels better in games

Try the G9.

I have the MX300, MX510, MX518, and the G5.

The 500 series, including the G5, are too big in my opinion. You have to use them with your whole hand and palm movement is the way it goes.

I personally prefer moving mice with my fingers for movement. So all these years I've been using my 500 series mice and G5 with a wide grip and diagonally.

I'm gonna try out the G9

You must have small hands. I love my G5 but it would be better for me if it was a little bigger as i use my fingers and my palm stays on my mousepad and sweats. :p: Is the G9 even any bigger?
