Computer giants off pricewatch shows a 18gig 15000 scsi drive new for like 40 bucks. Sounds good, so whats the catch, 34gig raptor is 100 bucks give or take.
Im thinking why not just go scsi for the o/s drive? Im assuming i'd have to buy a special Raid card to connect it to the mobo? other than that what is there to consider before grabbing one, Cause its not like its a major investment,, Just 40 bucks. Is there anything special you have to do to cool a high speed scsi other than air? Thanks

1) SCSI is usually alot more expensive
2) Good SCSI cards are not Cheap
3) 15k SCSI will beat 10k SATA anyday
4) They are a little bit louder but if access times and Benchmarks and reliablity is what you are looking for SCSI is unbeatable.

edit: just make sure you get a card that supports the SCSI. if you have a link I can be far more specific.

ScSi Controller Card is going for 14 bucks.(Adaptec AHA-2940UW SCSI Controller)
That with the 40 dollar scsi comes to 54 total...still reasonable for most people.
So what do you think? fair deal?

Yeah, well that card is a refurb 98' card pulled from an old server.

I've got a couple of SCSI cards that I've ran a 6x10k 18GB array in raid-0. The burst and average read are horrid, but the access time hits 6.2ms. Thats with a Compaq SCSI PCI card from 1997 and I get about the same results with a single port card from 99 pulled from a Dell poweredge 2300. Its because the stupid windows drivers that ruins SCSI-drives! :(

Anyone know of better cards for normal PCI these days? I've been looking, but I havn't seen any by XFX (which I thought was best bet as they seem to put out alot of good SATA and IDE raid controllers...)

This is the only one that seems up to par, but its at a tag of $300(CAD) and I don't even know if its Windows compatible...

1) XFX Doesn't make SCSI controller cards
2) unless you have a PCIX or PCIe mobo, SCSI's performance is going to be strangled by the PCI bus
3) get an Adaptec SCSI controller, they are some of the best in the world

1) Sorry, I didn't know that... No need to get all testy...
2) Yes, but it will shot by windows driver issue before it even comes near saturating the PCI-bus.
3) As a matter of fact, the card out of the PowerEdge is an Adaptec controller.
4) Why are we communicating in an ordered list?

2) very true
3) although that is true.. they some how managed to screw up the usage
4) Because I just felt like it...

I also think scsi are more reliable as they are meant to work in tough environments.

I don't think that has any merrit, like saying Ford is better then Chevy because they're made to haul more weight. Like any other product, you get what you pay for.

Seagate 18gig 15000 scsi drive. 60bucks.

Can you link me towards an suitable (inexpensive) scsi raid card?
Cause i don't need it near bad enough to have to shell out 100-300 for a scsi
raid card.
Or should i just grab a raptor sata and be done with it?
Thanks

That thing is expensive! I think I'll stick to my Adaptec card and array card. :D

I wish I had 6 more drives so I could have double the SCSI fun. :(

There is now a x4 PCIe SCSI controller out. Just ordered one from mwave.

http://www.attotech.com/ultra5D.html

This will go into my DFI Expert's x4 PCIe slot, with SLI on the x16's, a sound card in PCI, and finally the Gigabyte GC-RAMDISK. Slots full baby! :woot:

Oh yeah, using a 74gb Fujitsu MAU 15k rpm drive to begin with for OS. Will be adding at least one more SCSI drives, that 300GB 15k Seagate Cheetah looks sweet. :slobber: As for the ramdisk, I plan on ghosting games on and off of it as needed.

umm that controller.. there is ABSOLUTELY ZERO information on the site about Raid level support and I find that highly disturbing...:nono:

Umm... maybe that's because it is a HOST CONTROLLER. :slap: :fact:

SCSI has been around for a LOOOOONG time. U320 SCSI still has old and obsolete products around that can be slaughtered by a good SATA drive. However, the newer U320 and SAS products will slaughter any SATA drive but the price is much higher.
