My dad is considering buying a 400gb external drive for $400 at compusa! He wants to buy it today, and I told him to give me a few hours before he made the purchase because I'd like to help save a little money. He wants to use it with his laptop when he is out taking photos, so that he can just plug it into his desktop when he gets back from the field.

My questions:

Isn't there a better option? Like buying an internal drive and an enclosure + usb 2.0 converter?

If we go this route, are there any disadvantages?

Thanks!

yeah, usb converters don't neen an enclosure.. but how to power the drive? easiest way would be to get a bigger internal hdd for the lappy but the cheapest would be and external drive like you were asking about. Sounds like a LOT of $$ for that tho. If he wants to buy it now locally, go check out office max, they have maxtor and seagate externals in lots of sizes even with 16mb cache. (at least ours does here in NEB!!!)
