Just finished, Was a right heart in the mouth job.
Only a 146 so the damage wouldnt have hurt my wallet too much if I did screw up.
Not too sure about temps yet, ill post back.

Using an Arctic Cooling 64 Pro, mounted as normall.
The HSF doesnt mount as tight as normall obviously as the contact point CPU is lower due to the removed IHS. But I think this is a good thing.

Some may say I was lucky, I say I was extremely carefull!

I agree...as long as you're careful, popping the IHS isn't hard to do at all. I did it with a standard razorblade out of a boxcutter. It's a free mod that usually yeilds a good benefit of a higher overclock/better temps. Some people get all crazy, spending quite a bit of money to drop a few deg.C off their temps. This is free and it works! Good job.

Temps are down overall but the most noticable thing is the temp recovery. i.e. the time it takes to get back to idle after load... much faster. Will go into more detail when its not 1AM

I've been extremely curious about this mod - i'm going to try it when i get my boxcutter back from work.
With a lapped HSF would you still need thermal paste? I'm just thinking it'd be a bad thing since it's a half conductor, and with a lot of circuits flowing so close - that's not a good thing.

you can use floss instead of a razor if you want

you will always need thermal paste. even if your hsf had a mirror finish it won't be perfect on a microscopic level.

lapping a heatsink gives the best results with as5 at about 1000grit. there's a few threads about the optimum pit size (as a result of the grit size) compared to the particle size of the thermal paste you are using.

with that said, use just a tiny amount of thermal paste and it'll be good to go

You could always use the arctic ceramic thermal paste if you are that worried about it, as that stuff is non-conductive!!!

do u think this mod would work with the xp120 retention frame w/o modding the frame itself?

I did it to a 3800 and a 90C
mounted with bolt thru custom retention brackets for beter contact..

can u show a pic of how the clips on the xp90 are hooked into the custom frame? (if possible)

Yeh, that'd be neat. Might undress my chip and use my XP-90 if this is a workable option :p

So, why dont you tell us the advantages of it?
How many degrees you dropped?

It also interests me to know that result.
