I was wondering if you could configur 2 external HDD into raid for performance??

could this be possible?

I really doubt it, but I could be wrong.

Yes.
They make multi-drive enclosures that have a built in RAID controller.

Two different extenal disks in two different enclosures no.
U can raid two external disk using something like Order suggested though.

I think you can software RAID two USB drives as long as they are in different ports.

I think you'd find you have to write your own software app to let that work... I've never seen a program like that for USB before.

software raid, yes. performance? no.

Software raid has no problem using them.

The performance will probably suck if they are connected via firewire or USB. Apart from chipset limitations the drivers will almost certainly not be up to the task of scheduling independent requests to two different drives on the USB subsystem. Maybe one drive on USB and one on Firewire works better.

But it would certainly make sense for arrays that are allowed to be slow, or for hot-spares in a RAID-5.

Software raid can usually use any raw device, and you can create raw devices inside a filesystem. That means you can use anything that allows any filesystem to be accessed.

I personally used Linux software raid on three devices of which one was a file in a filesystem, one a file on a network server and the third on my USB-connected mp3 player. Performance kinda sucked, but it worked :D
