define more.. what is not too expensive..

i would say the JBL 1200.1 Class D if you can still find them.. or a Memphis Audio 1000/1

those are ~400 dollars last i checked... for a quality amp you will probably spend about 1 dollar per watt.

what kind of Box will you be building.. theres a lot more factors than just pushing 2 12" subs

and how much are you spending on the Type - R's? and box building materials and speaker wire? since to push a 1000Watt amp you want 4awg or lower

doubt it

a 4000 watt amp is probably ~1000 watts RMS... usually when you start talking above 2500 watts.. you start talking daisy chaining amps and multiple batteries rewound alternators and stuff like that....

you still didnt say your budget for the amp.

EDIT: but what do i know.. im not MECP certified and i dont compete in SPL

I'm going to agree with bullet2urbrain on this one. JBL 1200.1's are good bang for the buck amps. They will do their rated power.

Not sure what your exact budget will be, but other amps to look into:

Hifonics BX1500D
Rockford Fosgate T1001bd
Kicker KX1200.1
Orion 1200D

If you can find them, old school Autotek XS1500.1's are very nice as well.

All of these should be easily had for under 650.

If you havent already purchased an amp, I would definitely recommend this one:

They are AMAZING amps, especially considering the price. I was wary of them, considering I hadn't ever heard of them before, but I got a chance to listen to one powering two 12"s in my friends car, and it's amazing.

I know this may sound stupid, but if you can afford it get some W3's or one W7 and those things will make you crap your pants. They are freakin awesome.

funny.. thats what i own.. 1 JL 12 W7.

nah two type R 12"s will suit him plenty well.. plus its alot easier for most people dealing with 4,2,1ohm variants than 3ohm like the W7. not to mention a 70lb+ speaker is tough to work wtih.. especially if he's going to build a custom fibreglass box

www.jlaudio.com

check under subwoofers then W7 or W3v2

ehh i dont trust premade boxes... but those speakers arent bad a lil bit lower quality then the alpine type R's in my book

The Alpine's will do just fine vs any comparably priced JL (if there is such a thing with JL). JL products, while nice, are not magically better than other brands offerings in similar price ranges. It really comes down to what you want.

If you want some real audio help, hop over to this site and sign up on their forum. This is the best advice I can offer you.
