I was thinking of setting up a cheap RAID set, 2 Maxtor 200GB harddisks SATA1 with NCQ and 8MB.

Am I better doing that or going with a 300GB SATA2 drive?

I don't know if there's any drawbacks with using a RAID with SATA1 disks.

Please enlighten me.

Thanks,

David

the only drawbacks to using raid is eithier reduced Storage space (with redundancy of all information) or improved performance with a very slight reduction in dependablity

You'll gain more transfere speed with a 2*200GB SATA1 Stripe, than with a single 300GB SATAII.
But remember, the number of drives in your stripe arrey equals the increase in chance of loosing your data om Stripe arreys (2 disks = double chance of failure, 4 disks = quad chance of failure etc.).
