Is it possible to create a secure storage system of 1Tb raid5 raid10, at a low cost. I am seeing that most boards now support raid5 using onboard controllers.
Thanks

define low cost.
because in theory it is possible.

Around $1000. Including the drives only. Doesnt have to include the board, cpu, etc.
Thanks

not even a problem infact you can pick up 4 400GB drives and have 1.2TB of space for under $800

250gb drives are very cheap right now. You can pick up some decent ones for under $100. Yes it is very possible.

except for one problem in Raid5 the sum of the storage is (n-1)(capacity) and since nVidia Raid is only 4 SATA connections.. that would be 3x capacity.. so you would need 333.333Gb drives

Why do you have to use the Nvidia Raid controller? With how cheap those drives are you can get an add in card that has plenty of connectors.

yeah and then you have to deal with the PCI bus Which Kills performance or Get a PCIe card which costs you through the lungs.

Highend raid controllers seems expensive. The onboard intel and nvidia controllers only got 4ports, I hope the 6port controllers will come out soon, for onboard chipsets. And the 500gig drives are also expensive.
Thanks

400GB drives are pretty cheap considering.

Western Digital Caviar (WD4000YR) Raid Edition 2 400GB 7200RPM 16MB Buffer four of these guys. The 500gigs are almost double in price, not worth it for 100gig extra. For the board, I want to go amd, Asus A8N-SLI Premium, is there any cheaper board that support raid5, either for intel or amd.
Here is what I choose, but I think I over done it. I prefer a cheaper board, with pci express, and a get raid controller, and use more drives. I also chose Zalman ZM-2HC2 Heatpipe Hard Disk Drive Cooler is it worth it.
Thanks

well if you just want 1 PCIe X16 and onboard raid5
my vote strongly goes for the Gigabyte

Damn the board looks amazing and its price, no more need for video card. My only concern it doesnt have an extra serial ata, to use for my boot drive.
Thanks

well you always could just get a cheap IDE HD and use it as a boot drive.

Ya you are right. Theres no cheap single pciexpress board full atx.
Thanks

Hi guys,
I think that you didn't mention that the RAID 5 Parity bits need to be calculated by the CPU ( because the onboard & cheap controllers don't feature any processor ), and that's not the main thing.
A friend of mine tested 4 Maxtor DiamondMAX Plus 10 200GB Drives @ RAID 5 on the onboard SATA Controller on DFI LP nF4 SLI-DR and got terrible read/write performance...most of the time worse than a single drive results.

Ofcourse there's a solution,a good SATA RAID Controller :)
