I need a car. Should be giving my Driving test pretty soon. However, being in the UK, insurance is compulsary by law. And also, they really rip off new drivers...were talking like in excess of £1k for a 1.2l.... :slapass: If that wasn't the case, I'd be using my mum's Golf GTI as her main car is a Merc CLK 350.

Need you to recommend me a car (used), around 1.4l....1.6l absolute max...Just need acceleration really. Not too bothered about top speed if you get what i mean :)

cheers :toast:

PS: No, i can't add a turbo to it... ;) ie no mods, nothing...

and yeah, dont want to spend more than £5k on it.

If your going to be insuring it yourself then your best off putting in a load of different cars into a site like admiral or elephant and find out whats cheap to insure.

You wont get a good quote on anything 1.4L or above.

How much can you spend on insurance?

Personally I think your better off spending £1500 on a car and insuring it 3rd party only rather than £5k on the car and paying even more insurance.

The obvious choices are fiesta, ka, polo and other small cars.

Your not going to get anything "fast" without paying a fortune for insurance.

You might want to consider buying somehting much older (like an old VW beetle) and insuring it on classic insurance.

Good luck with the driving test.

cheers mate :)

as far as insurance goes, preferably under £1.5k first driver. I'll be doing my pass plus as well which should help. Don't really want something too old, as it'll be used on the motorway a fair bit...i was thinking something around 5-6 years old tops...

Have a search on www.autotrader.co.uk
If you see somehting you like see what quotes you can get for the insurance.

As for reliablity on older cars. My prelude is 13 and runs great, and my previous 10 year old fiesta did over 10k miles a year and never went wrong, even at full throttle 90% of the time.
I wouldnt discount slightly older cars due to there age, milage, service history and condition are much more important for reliability.

Pass plus is well worth doing, even if it wont teach you much its worth the saving on insurance.

toyota aygo i dont know if its cost 5k punds but i think is pretty close to it... honda jazz, citroen c1, daihatsu sirion, daihatsu terios, fiat punto, fiat stilo, ford ka, ford fiesta, ford fussion, hyndai accent, mazda 2, mazda 3, mitsubishi colt, nissan micra, peugeot 107, peugot 206, renault clio, seat ibiza, VW lupo, vw polo

there you have a small list with some cars you can buy try to choose one no body owns so the inssurances is cheaper.... (hate inssurance in UK and petrol price)

Just an FYI...that has absolutely nothing to do with accel nor top speed. There are far, far more variables to consider.

Go have a look at kit cars like the Robin Hood etc. Not only will you get a lot of experience from working on it, they are almost infinetly tunable, and the insurance is cheap (I got a 1.4 version when I was 19, insured fully comp for £700, bearing in mind it'll do 0-60 in a touch over 7s)

defo get something like golf 1.4 petrol, escort 1.3 or Pug 306. the 306 has a very low insurance group (4 or 5 i think)and comes in at 1.6l so its not too slow but coz your a new driver the insurance on 1.6l will be considerably higher than 1.3/1.4. serious tho, i wouldnt consider trying to get even a remotely powerful car for your first car:nono: coz you have so much more learning to do as soon as you start driving for real. im sure everyone would agree, stay cool and keep your speed down for a year in a crappy banger and you will learn how to 'really' drive, then go for something with a bit more shove. plus, if you have a bump in your first year with no no claims, your premiums go thru the roof the next year.

I might get something like a '97 Polo 1.4 16v. 0-60 in 10.2 secs and top whack of 117 MPH. Insurance group 10 though, so insurance was about £2050 with no pass pluss, so should be around £1200 with pass plus. I'll be keeping my 1st car for around 5 years so it should be a bit nippy. :)

ok first - pass plus wont get you that kind of reduction, maybe 15% but no way 40% -------

second, you aint never gonna keep your first car for five years, i dont care what you say now, you will change your mind so dont worry too much about makin the perfect choice
