View Full Version : Why don't you ever hear about tri-fan radiators?

Just wondering, but is there any particular reason we really hardly ever see any info on BIP/BIX III / PA/HE 120.3's? I'll allow that a 3x120mm radiator is probably overkill for most systems, but I'm a little surprised I hardly ever see any of these products in reviews, and almost never as contenders for parts in anyones system.

Is it all just because the PA120.2's and BIP II's are just that much more common? For the reviews I can understand it partially (very surprised I've never seen a review on one from Cathar at least.. but I could have just missed it) because not many people use them, but why not in anyone's system? Is it just because people want to go with something that they hear a lot about? Is it because of fears the larger rad would create too large of a pressure drop?

Personally, I just bought a BIP III because it was only $5 more than a BIP II (would have gone PA, but they're so expensive here in NA... I could almost get 3 BIP II's for the price of one PA120.2) and I was using the reasoning that even if I don't fully take advantage of it now, it's got to be large enough to be able to grow with my system over time. Besides, for only $5 more (plus another $6 for a Yate Loon), I should get even better cooling (even if only by 1 or 2 degrees). Is there something hideously wrong with my thinking??

I'm sure I'm missing something, but I would like to hear from some people about this.

The only cases where you can easily fit one is a mountainmods... otherwise its heavy modding time.

In my case f.ex, the 120.2 fits happily at the front in front of my HDs without any modding.

Becuase when I looked at it the cost premuim was pretty much the same as having dual 2x120mm rads. Although it would fit better for me.:)

Thats not a problem over here in the UK, price diff between a PA120.1 and 120.2, 120.2 and 120.3 is about 5£.

nothing wrong with getting a bigger radiator. but some people don't get it because its too big to fit inside a case and don't want to modify their case to accommodate it.

I got the BIP3 since it was fairly cheap and i wanted something quiet. I just hacked the top part of my case to fit it. I have the standard cheiftec case and its fairly big but there was still no place to put it except on the top and lose 1 of my 5 1/4" bays.

fans had to go outside of the case and i made a shroud for it

I have a PA120.3 but I also have a MM U2-UFO. I will be displaying my system once its all done soon. I'm waiting for next month for release of the 7900, hopefully I'll be able to get one and finish this PC.

At the time I bought the PA, I ordered it from OCUK.

iirc v2000 as well, although you have to take a few hdd walls out and i think they unscrew as well.

:stick: Thats too much modding for some people. :p:

the hdd racks do unscrew, but they are a bietch to unscrew.. I stripped 2 scews while taking out the hdd racks at work.

:( Recon i'll need a penumatic drill to move them?

Just remembered that the bottom of the case does not have pre-cut holes for the rad fans so, yeah it looks like the ufo is the only case 120.3's go in without effort.

Knowing me, i will seriously mess up my case if i try to cut the holes..

*wonders if the rad & fans can survive with the small holes that are already there.*

Triple Rad fit in my TJ07 with ease.....no modding at all. Now that I have a second TJ07 I am looking to put a triple rad in that......BIP3 or PA120.3....Hmmmm.

It didn't take too terribly much work to mod the top panel on my PC-75B to get the HE120.3 to fit nicely. Grab yourself a 119mm hole saw, a drill, a file, and you'll be ready to mount a HE120.3 in darn near any case u want ;)

Fit the pa120.3 in my lian-li pc7077 very very easily. no need to get a gigantic mm case. I had one but sold it, not sure why, just got tired of it.

Here in UK and Europe, 120.3 is our biggest seller (from both HE and PA series).
It's purely US where the problem lies due to exchange rate resulting in price being double that of Indian / Phillipino / Chinese produced rads. We can have 100 of each on the shelf. Guarantee 120.3 will sell out first, then 120.2, then 120.1

HE120.3 top mounted on a Chieftec AX01W (Ali version of these: http://www.chieftec.com/products/dragon/dh01_new.htm)

Drilled 4x holes in top of case to align to 4x corners of rad. Screwed mobo standoffs into rad. Used mobo screws to fix the two together. But that's from YEARS ago - that's the first ever prototype HE120.3 on top o' that thing...

I have a BIX3 mounted to the side of my case. I was originally using it for my 437 watt peltier TEC setup (cause of the insane amount of heat it puts out) but since i scrapped that project a while ago It has only been cooling my processor, VGA and NB which i agree is overclick. However I spent so long doing the mods for my case i dont feel like switching back.

Any chance for for direct sales on the PA series of rads to the US, with maybe cheaper packaging ? By the time the PA rads get here and the US distributers get their cut the rads are pretty expensive. I would like to buy a PA120.3 but it is like $70 more than a BIP 3 for a low noise solution and I am sure it's not claimed that is almost three times better.
