View Full Version : What runs off the 5v rail?

I have an OCZ modstream as a backup powersupply and it powers my fans and h20 setup. The problem is, its 12v rail reads 11.32v at load and from what I can tell this is because I have no load on the 5v rail. What hardware can I plug into it to run off the 5v rail? Do harddrives and/or disk drives run off the 5v line? I thought fans did as well?

Interesting... I want to know this as well...
I have the same PSU.. had all cables connected.... mobo, floppy, gpu, sata disk, IDE disk and one for my fans/CCFL's and my load volts are 11.35. Disconnecting stuff didn't make a difference.

11.35v is just too low as I'm experiencing issues with artifacts when taking my GPU to the max... cooling isn't by far an issue...

If you're after loading your 5V line, why not just get a power resistor?

Well, it would be easier to just plug a component off of my enermax onto my ocz since the enermax doesnt have this issue.

dont hard drives and cd roms use 5v in some of their components?

i think they are on 12v

5v really come into its own with BH5 RAM and DFI NF4 boards as well as Abit AN8 Ultra and Fatality range as they use 5v rail for RAM.....Expert/Venus/Abit native for vdimm and NF4 DFI Ultra-D/SLI-D/SLI-DR with a 4v jumper

Well, I still dont know, but I am returning this gay modstream anyways so lets just let this thread die for now.

are you measuring this with DMM or just mobo sensor reads because you could have buggered sensors too you know

My friends ModStream is also very gay, his 12V rail is at 11.5 or something like that.

LOL. I love this thread, haha.

if your using software this is probally not a true reading as most of the time they are off by about that much on software readings. use a dmm if you havent to verify the voltage on the line. also hdd and cdroms do use the 5v power hence the read wire on the molex. the motherboard also uses 5v rail to power a few things. however its not widely used as it was in the socket A days with the newert cpu's. if your 12v is still low you may be seeing issues of not properly cross loading the psu in which case you can do taht by putting a power resistor on the 5v rail

use a few pelts at 5v ;)
