im looking to buy a sempron to replace the mobile chip in my sig since i cant get it over 2.6hgz and mem controller doesnt like over 270, and my ram has more in it. im looking athe 2800+ w/256k cache, at 200x8. or the 3000+ w/128k cache at 200x9.

the chip i have now is a 512k cache newcastle core. would this be an upgrade? which is better, never used a sempron.

Semprons are decent, i'd suggest you to go for model w/ more cache. BTW you have cache size performance comparison here:

http://www.xbitlabs.com/articles/cpu/display/sempron-2600_4.html

however my subjective feeling after a couple of months of use (i also had Newcastle) is that these #'s don't tell the whole story and that difference can be felt... especially during heavy multi-tasking.

so you may also consider Venice based s754 A64.

look for OPN ending with 'BX'.

hmmm.... thanks for the input. looks like ill go for higher cache and lower multiplier and hope that i can get the high htt that i will need. a venice based chip is probably over my budget of about 100$ CDN.
