View Full Version : Solid copper gpu units

Should have both solid copper SLI/crossfire gpu units finished later today and ready for some nitro :) I have been busting my ass on design and getting them done. It hasnt been easy considering the space you have to work with on the middle card. These units will BARELY fit the expert board fully insulated.
Here is the first look at the raw material and some milling. The bores and final machinework gets done later today:

Raw material (saw cut). Guess what the little one is for :p:

Milling down to final size:

Compare of raw block with milled down material:

More pics later incuding other stages of production and testing of course.

Looking good so far:)

Just curious how much does the copper cost you? Just to get a comparison to what I can get it here for in Canada.

looks good, is the little block for north bridge?

yep.

We were doing the bore today on the first pot and the measurments were slightly off and the tool tore through one of the sides of the block. This stuff happens :( More copper on the way... The material to make these is around 70.00 per unit. The difficutly with getting it right is that the copper block is being held by custom made fixture so it spins slightly off center...making the hole off center. This is by design and I was hoping to get it right first shot.

I was thinking its for the memory sticks but I guess not.

The material to make these is around 70.00 per unit.

Okay, thats actually pretty similar to what is costs over here. I thought it might have been cheaper in the states.:(

Exactly what afi said and I decided to change some dimensions on the container to add more mass and have a slightly large bore. The overall design is the same, just will take a little more time now, but I should have something this week. Copper comes in mond or tue.

Even if the northbridge block adds ~30 more mhz, thats enough to get a higher/faster world record. BTW, you should definetly make one for the ram. The japs have one, and it will probably help some of your utt/bh-5 for an extra 10mhz.

Bloody_Sorcerer
01-22-2006, 07:53 PM
heck, if liquid cooling ram poorly can get 4mhz, some LN2 should work wonders :)
lookin pretty good thus far... i'm interested to see how you plan on milling them up and mounting them.

hey man i meant in this case that block is so small that will only add some fkn work, i know that you achieve more mhz that's good for sure, but is better to solder a little tube on that miniblock at least...

Gonna install some bead probes in a bit then start testing. I'm hoping these things take it to another level....if not back to the drawing board. I worked hard on the design and getting as much mass as possible "between the cards".

Wow... truly a work of art kp... want to see the action :)

Got both pots insulated now and test-fitted on the expert and everything fits great. As soon as I am done farking around with this dothan in 01', it's back to SLI rig for some more 06,05,and 03. That will be the true test as 01' is the easiest on hardware.

Kaffebord
02-07-2006, 11:19 AM
Why not fit the holddown on the other side of the unit? So you can insulate all the way down to the card real easy.
But I asume your way of mounting it won't do any problem, most units are mounted that way. But it would be cool to see other ways of mouting a gpu-unit.
Just an idea.
But as always stunning work kinping. And I hope the new unit will give you great number

And can we have a look at the inside when you have testet the unit? :D

k|ngp|n
02-07-2006, 01:02 PM
This was actually my very first idea on how to mount. I was going to cut grooves in the backside of containers for brackets to lock on to. Prolly much more stable mount this way...but there are insulation issues this way as well.
What I thought was my best idea for mounting I may use on the next set I do. It involved a clip style mount.
For this set, I knew the metal bracket would be easy to do and give me the best possible contact/pressure on the die that I would need so I went that route for the first set.

Also did you think about copper peices that bolt to container base area that touch to ram? Something along those lines?

afireinside
02-11-2006, 11:40 AM
That's a lot of extra work for no gain. With dice/ln2 on a gfx the entire thing is already chilled pretty well. If you put cold right on the mem chips the entire card would frost over instantly. Plus it sounds like a machining nightmare.

payne280
02-11-2006, 07:52 PM
would be worth it as when cards are that cold the ram is pretty much frozen

Awesome! They look smaller than I thought. No chipset?

They are small, but there is no doubt in my mind that these containers do some serious damage. Got one of my cards clocking through 01' at 843/2226 with one of them. It's all about the design, not the size.
I have been too damn busy to do the chipset cooler yet. I doubt it would fit on this mobo with these card anyways. I want to make it for p4c800/dothan.

Got a little bump in my 05' score with 20 more core mhz in SLI, but I am running into some problems with ocp and coldboot issues on one card making it a little tough to even break 800mhz SLI. That and I was rusty as hell at pouring three tubes :)..couldnt keep up with it. Need some more practice.
