Alright guys. Before the pics you need to know the story...

I have a relaly crappy NVIDIA 5600XT graphics card, it only hit about 7,000 on 3dmark01 and it was overclocked from 235/399 to 300/500. Well today I decided to change that, I made the Uber Ultra Xtreme Video Card Mod:

http://img11.imageshack.us/img11/2845/dsc050113dt.th.jpg (http://img11.imageshack.us/my.php?image=dsc050113dt.jpg)

http://img11.imageshack.us/img11/6761/dsc050126pw.th.jpg (http://img11.imageshack.us/my.php?image=dsc050126pw.jpg)

http://img11.imageshack.us/img11/2599/dsc050091xr.th.jpg (http://img11.imageshack.us/my.php?image=dsc050091xr.jpg)

http://img11.imageshack.us/img11/9599/dsc050060vb.th.jpg (http://img11.imageshack.us/my.php?image=dsc050060vb.jpg)
^That is stock^

It is a Socket A Amd Stock Cooler with some heatsinks I cut off and a Zalman Fan :)

This is what I got:

Yup Yup...

1700 marks increase.

Oh and the overclock went from 300/500 to 348/550 :)

Ah, the good old CPU-heatsink-on-GPU mod. More fun each time you do it.

Watch the voltage on your northy.

Ever hear of spontaneous northwood death syndrome? Over 1.7v and your processor's life is toast.

Why did you skip a memory module?
I was to lazy to cut out a nother piece of the heatsink with my dremel so I decided to leave that one alone, lol.

And I ran my northy at 1.825V Before, lol. I dont really care about it because I am getting an opteron asap.

seeing as you have TT in your picture thingie you probably say something but i have had a lot of horrible experiences with them and i wouldnt trust them with even my voodoo 3 [my 2nd best card], but i trust amd and used a stock venice hsf as a passive thing on my 6600LE

[I know its kinda off topic but just commenting on stuff already said]

To me its just as much an accomplishment to push the hell out of you hardware as it is for someone to get high scores with the latest and greatest. The point is to continue to improve on what you have hardware wise in preparation for the faster hardware down the road.

Then again, thats coming from a poor college student.

Nice work comrad.

Maybe if you cut it a little.

Just a quick question - what's the prefered glue on these forums? Just a standard epoxy? or some sort of special mix?

When i had to glue on my RAMsinks (i sorta stuffed up and the thermal tape (although it was extremely thick) wouldn't stick any more) i made a special concoction of superglue and AS5 - works pretty well. I have 2 extremely cool VRAM modules, and the rest at regular temps. :P

This problem was gone with the Northwood C or even B, but good thing mentioning it.

AMD Athlon XP 2400+
ASUS A7V8X-X
Cheap PNY 512MB DDR Memory
40GB Western Digital 7200rpm
Windows 2000 SP4

i could of went higher but in this board the multi is locked and the voltage maxes at 1.85v. when i get my new system i am gonna throw it in my nforce 2 which we all know will unlock the multi and allow upto 2.1v so i should be able to get more out of this system. also after a 5 hour prime run it didnt hit over 48C on air, my room temp is around 25C. so heres the pic.

Hey my mem chips are like 2mm lower than my core chip. were yours?
What should I do so that my cpu heatsink can cover them both. I was thinking about taking it to school and using the milling machine, but I'd rather do it at home. I have alot of tools here, (my dad, uncle, and grandpa are/were mechanics) Any ideas?

comrad
04-17-2006, 11:10 AM
Well... You can try something like this:

http://img394.imageshack.us/img394/9821/vcidea0qd.jpg

@_dud
04-17-2006, 12:33 PM
@comrad thanks I was planning to do that, but what kind of tools? I was thinking of using a really large circular bit, and just "dig" a whole for the core chip, but i was wondering if someone had a better idea.

comrad
04-17-2006, 02:12 PM
Well I think I would get one of those circular table saws and cut the heatsink with that, if that wont work try a hand held saw with the blade that is like... a rock-ish material. And then sand it down with a sand belt machine.

(I dont know the names of any of the tools I use because I am Russian and I only know the russian names of them)

They fit on a 7800GT but you have to cut some of the fins that would interfere with the motherboard :P

I should watercool my MX440SE PCI :p:

anyone want to see a 1337 mod?
how about a Arctic Cooling Freezer7 heatsink on a GPU?

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v320/CrazyXP1700/Computer%20Crap/evercool026.jpg

it's a PCX5750... it ran stock 425/500... i cranked it up with vmods to 649/749mhz and took #1 on orb at the time (http://service.futuremark.com/compare?2k1=8675862)...
these cards normally do around 10k at stock clocks...

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v320/CrazyXP1700/Computer%20Crap/X800GTO003.jpg

now i got an all copper 2U 3.4ghz Xeon heatsink on my X800GTO2 (the ones that are really X850's...) and a vmod... it clocks good... im waiting for new CPU... then a new PSU to take it to it's max... so far i got 26.6K in 01... with a 3.8ghz 805... now im getting a 631 that will probably see 5ghz :D

keep it up Comrad...
eventually you'll go real crazy :D

oh i had no problems getting things into the PCI slots...
all the fins in the heatsink were gonna fit in just fine...

i ended up putting a strip of neoprene down over the PCI slots to keep the fins from going in LOL!

i think thats the most Xtreme i've gone just yet...
the 2U heatsink works out fine with most ASUS boards, i have clearance for another GPU (for SLI or Crossfire) with a another 2U cooler... and theres just enough room in there i can still install my WIFI TV in the bottom PCIe slot...

but my X800 at 600mhz on the core barely breaks 43C if i recall correctly...
it's been siting on my desk for FAR TOO LONG

im ready to get my recently aquired 631! should have some good results by monday or tuesday hopefully...

Toughest part was removing old glued heartsink, but coldspray did do its work :D
