ok, who voted for the maxtor must have been drunk. :toast: ;)

the Seagate Cuda V is the quietest 7200RPM drive available. it's quieter than the Cuda IV, and i can't even hear my Cuda IV, even during seeks.

if you'd like to know some numbers, go to http://www.storagereview.com. lots of info on lots of different drives.

I voted seagate but... I gotta say my fluid maxtors can't be heard sitting on the desk running in front of me either. Seems the noise level of these varies greatly which is disturbing but may explain the maxtor votes.

Some complain about a horrible high pitched whine and grinding noises.... My fluid bearing ones are just dead silent??? But you can't count on that either.

Cuda's rule for quiet. Just don't raid them.

I never heard my Western Digital 40GB 7200 drive until I took it out of the computer and put it into someone elses.

WD quiet ? Hah...compared to the new Barracuda ATA V the WD sounds like a tornado ;)
Even Maxtor's new DM+9 is a lot quieter.

My maxtors are quiet once theyre going but at start up when they first start to spin they emit a screech... got em RAIDed so they are botrh always going and they dont seem loud to me at all.

EDIT - They are both DiamondMax 9, 7200RPM, ATA133s, 60GBs
