View Full Version : has anyone else noticed this about opteron dc vs x2?

recently, ive been seeing A LOT of 3800's hit around 2.8 on air, which is REALLY good. i know it only has 512 cache, but its still really really good, especially when 165's and 170's can barely ever hit that stable.

are the later x2's (3800 in particular) gaining an advantage over opterons, despite opterons lower stock vcore?

ive had a 170 and ive had a toledo core 3800 for around 4 or 5 months. the x2 oc'd better, scored a decent amount higher in 3d benchmarks (?) at the same clock speed, and cost over $100 less. i sold the 170. on my new rev ultra d, the x2 just about hits 3ghz on air.

very truly yours,

MHz for MHz the 3800+ also runs cooler and is easier on the electicity bill.

That said, there are very few GREAT 3800+s and a-more-than-occasional chance of getting an Opty that does clock just as well. A 165, btw, is within 10 dollars of the 3800+ and typically does equally well as the 170.

it just seems that recently on the newer dfi boards, especially with being cooler, the x2 is a better buy based on consistancy of above 2700mhz speeds at reasonable temps

well the whole hype was that some of the early opteron steppings were getting really nice OC,,, and even a few later opt 170 steppings but alot has to do with the luck and the chip you get,,,

I have talked to people who hit 2850 on the 0543 opt 170 and my opt 170 cant go past 2700 on core 0,,, core 1 overclocks just fine to the higher speeds,,,,

While there seems to be a lot of people reporting sucess with the 3800+ so I guess maybe there is a better mix of good steppings for it,,,, although I know that if I made the switch I would probably end up with a bad stepping with knowing my luck,,,

and the funny thing is, i have the revered 0530 tpmw, and i cant get it to go that high, i can get it to be like 2730 @ 1.534

burn in here i come!

Take what you read with a grain of salt. There are a lot of noobs getting Optys because they think it's *easier* to OC. Since they don't really understand what they are doing, they are getting poor OC's.

My Opteron 165 did 2.7GHz on 1.52v 9 hours prime stable, and this was done on an MSI K8N Neo2 plat

but see, i understand what i'm doing, its just that this chip is nothing to sh.t my pants about. there may be a few things that i dont fully understand that may let me get 10/20 more mhz, but still, i know what i'm doing. i just plan on burning it in a lot and hopefully thatll help

you dont need much IQ to OC a cpu
anyone can do it

But you've got to learn it first. Driving a car for the first time, same thing.

Theres a difference by OC and OC well. You should know that. If I didn't know to play around with MAL/RP timings my 146 would have always maxed 3050 and not 3250.
