View Full Version : Soldered pot?

Since CNC isn't an option, I'm going to solder my own pot using casted copper base and big copper tube for the wall.

I'm also thinking acrylic for the tube since it's clear and does not conduct heat like copper, that way I might be able to make a closed pot with guided wind pipe (going out the window), and can still see how much LN2 is left in the pot. Or I can install LEDs in there, make part of it with acrylic, so it's like a LN2 or CO2 level indicator.

i dunno how much acrylic would like being that cold...i'm sure it gets brittle...

hell yes it gets brittle right after 0c If I were you I would NOT solder but braze a container.
Arcylic woudl shatter under ln2 temps.

How about glass, tempered glass? It's used in dewers. Ya I'll braze it with brass, it's stronger than copper, and shield with argon.

Why don't you just make a regular brazed tube. It would be as strong as you would need for DICE and maybe LN2.

I suggest no class or acrylic it would be the weak link in your tube. It will not hold the cold well. Why do you want a closed tube with the exhaust out the window? IMO having the cold air spewing over the edge of the tube and across the motherboard helps cool other components. ;)

there's nothing wrong with a solderd container, i know Troman has one that has ben done with silver...
It keeps temps @ -45 on a 3500+ clawhammer 3500mhz and 1.8v pumped trought it ...
That's enough i think :)

Hmmm silver is costy though...

Which metal conducts heat the fastest? I heard aluminium is faster than copper but it doesn't solder with other metal. I could make a copper base with silver core XD

silver solder isn't that expensive they call it silver solder ,but's actually 2 components mixed up :)

LoL I'm thinking 99% pure silver core, then copper everything else, I'll use brass brazing since it's stronger.

stupid freeking idea man, you would have to braze, not solder and acrylic/ glass will not do it....half of how a tube works is that it conducts heat up the walls thats why solid tubes work better then brazed tubes, theres no braze to hinder the heat flow up the walls

Why do you want heat to travel up the walls? I could have a solid base, then soldered walls, it sould increase the performance since the wall tubing isn't loosing too much soldness.

No heat rises so you want the walls to have as LITTLE hindarence as possible. Thats why solid tubes rock.

LN2 will draw the oils out of acrylic turing it opaque and brittle.

I think soldered is fine, the part I'm not sure about is the cast base. I'd try to find a chunk of Copper to machine your base out of.

you can solder it as long as you use a good quality solder like harris #8.

brazing is better for conducting heat though.

K, I'm gonna use trial n error to make this container. I talked to NoL, learned A LOT (thanks bro :D)!
I'll use surface area to pwn the advanteges of a solid container, and have brazed joints. Silver core is out of the plan though, cost too much, and it's my first tank :)

why do you not listen to any of us...theres no way a brazed container can beat a solid one

Because then they can come and complain it doesnt perform as well as they'd like :p

impecible reasoning....the jedi mind skills of the stupid people are overwhelming....but they shall not assimilate me!

It is the right statement.. A solid tube (if proper designed) will rock and kick arse a soldered one. Why? coz of the great mass and surface that can be cooled. Then again the walls also will help in holding down the cold.

It is proved by many people like the Japanese / MM and kingpin!

there is nobody in belgium that have a tube done with silver! and no way troman :stick:

please anyone that saids that solder is enough, maybe for dice but absolutly NOT with ln²

I have broke 2 tubes with LN2 Save as (http://mbnet.fi/paakkis/LN2_Vid/LN2_Vid.mpg).That is the first one :D
