Without much hype, Advanced Micro Devices has showcased its next-generation mobile processor with advanced memory controller and two processing engines at an event in Japan. In conjunction with the processor, the world’s second largest maker of x86 chips has told about its Yamato project that is aimed at system developers and which is expected to ease development and manufacturing of AMD-based notebooks.

And if you speak Japanese:

nice. I'll be waiting with interest.

I take it these will be among the first socket s1 chips considering the dual channel ddr2 - but that'll mean it'll be quite some time before their release - they'll probably end up facing down merom not yonah. Also if the system can support up to 5 hours battery life you have to wonder just how slow the clock speeds will have to be.

why? perhaps the found a way to consume less watts in cpu ram hdd and the whole plataform, now they are watching the whole plataform like intel does with the centrino thing.

5 hours should be nice

so how much longer before I can upgrade to dual core laptop?

AMD mobile processors with two cores and dual-channel memory controller should emerge in the Q2 2006. It is unclear when notebook makers plan to adopt the new platforms designed by AMD and partners.

Thats just around the corner. Q2 will be upon us before we know it and laptop prices will drop nicely.

curious about power consumption.
will be hard if not impossible to get below 30W with a64 dual cores i think
thats 15W per a64 core...

Its still going to be 9 months or so before amd's 65nm process comes online so at least initial processors should be 90nm.

nice... dual cores should give lappies a nice kick in the pants... prolly one of the best performance enhancements you'll be able to get for a laptop when they're available... sweet! (provided you're running an OS or have drivers to take advantage of both cores)

dual 2.0ghz cores at 1v or less would be nice (achieavable on current 90nm tech).

Wow something to look farward to definately, I was in the process of buying a laptop in the next month when taxes come back..

Was thinking dual core or a nice intelM with a 7800, had a nice price about 2400 also, now im thinking about waiting for this newer tech..

9 months is a long time to wait though, maybe just buy el cheapo until this comes?

According to the publication, the demonstrated Yamato platform could decode H.264 video with 1920x816 resolutions along with WMV9 (1280x720) and the MPEG-2 (720x480) simultaneously without problems, which should be no surprise as the processor has two cores and the GeForce graphics chip can also decode both WMV9 and MPEG-2. The CPU usage, according to Windows Task manager, was about 50%.

i would like to be able to do that on my laptop for 5 hours, on a battery :D

I hope you are wrong about this, fab36 was supposed to begin chip production at 65 nm from the start - Q1 2006... amd said they are going to delay 65nm, but didn't say how much, I personally hope for the summer. Probably IBM can be of some help to amd's transition

q4 2006 will still be 90nm
