X2 - Un-Capped :)

I finally got up the nerve to strip my X2 4400 today. About 5 minutes of calming myself down... and about 10minutes to actually do it. Hacking away on a $500 processor with a razor blade... talk about making a dude sweat!

Idle temps only dropped 2c. Load temps dropped 6c!!! Amazing. After this experience I firmly believe that IHS are the devil.

I was using my whitewater block to test today. Going to switch over to the storm this weekend when the rest of my stuff gets here.

i want to, but im so scared to do it on mine... look how close all that stuff is to the edges of the glue! the insides of teh X2 come so close to the edges

i just hope im not pissed if the new watercooling setup i make isnt significantly better than the 7700cu i have on it now, but removing the IHS is something ive been scared of. if it had little pads like the XPs did then that would be OK.

what is the risk of crushing the core if you are using a waterblock, not a huge heavy heatsink?

Not too much of a risk. No more than with the old XP2500's and other xp series.

Probably less risk, actually... because these X2 cores are huge! Lots of surface. Just mount it evenly, and you'll be fine.

Less risk with a WB than a HSF actually, because most WB's mount via screws, so you can take them in one thread at a time to ensure an even mount.

how do you plan on mounting the storm?
the fittings i have require me to press down on the storm so that i can get the screws into the mobo backplate :(
if it didn't need me to do this, i would seriously consider cutting the ihs off my chip

yea...thats what I did...popped the top off my Venice and used the nylon washers for Socket A I think since they were thinner (to compensate for IHS thickness)

Popping the lid is no problem. And for longer screws, use 3 inch 6/32 screws with wing nuts.

crap, i can't get 3 inch 6/32 screws with wingnuts anywhere.
i've been to a few diy shops around here, the closest i can get is 4mm and they're too wide for the holes in the storm hold down plate
please, does anyone know where i can get these in the u.k.?

Find parts, forget screws, want 6-32 threaded rod and other stuff (gotta be around there SOMEWHERE :D )

You will have to make rod longer, do dry run w/ IHS or add 1/8" (so you can test them b4 removing IHS :D ) and measure w/ everything in place (springs, etc) LOOK at the PICs...

This how I also mount my G4 & G5 - install ONCE, then takes about 5 mins max to swap CPUs. ( for me biggest time is cleaning everything b4 remounting :D )

DangerDen CPU Block mounting kit.... the supplied threaded rods generally screw into mobo backplate just fine... add springs and thumbscrews a-top the block and job done...

S'how I always tend to end up doing it... no matter what the CPU block is.

Hope you don't mind me thread crapping. I just uncapped my opty 170 this morning at 8am still with crunchies in my eyes (yea i know TMI). Load temps dropped 12c bare core running two instances of cpuburn. Last night temps reached 57c, now on a fresh layer of AS5, temps are 46c.
