slk-800 or watercooling

i recently upgraded to an abit nf7-s mobo,for now i'm using my 1800xp pall(soon be upgrading to tbredb) with a volcano 7.with my old mobo(fic an11) and volcano 7 i used to get 42*c under load,with the abit i'm seeing up to 60*c and sometimes above.
should i get a slk-800 with a decent fan or is watercooling my only hope?wrong section but how effective is watercooling?

I haven't run toast yet, but at 220X8 on a 1600+/2.85 Vcc I'm getting a maximum 50 C thermal diode/41 C CPU probe running the Prime95 torture test on a KD7-E with a SLK800 and Sunon 84cfm fan.

Ambient watercooling should do better (and quieter), plus with watercooling you have the option of active cooling via ice, bong, TEC, chiller, etc.

i did a little price checking on a watercooling setup about a year ago, and i found that you have to spend $200+ to get a good setup(remember, this was a year ago, and i was pricing the TOP END stuff).

watercooling has its benifits, it can be quiet, it's more efficient than air, it can be cooler too. but aircooling is cheaper.

anyway, it sounds like you are getting higher temps with the same chip and HSF. have you tried remounting it? are you overclocking, and you weren't previously?

yes ive remounted hsf,with my old board i was running @147 fsb,perfectly stable at 42*c load.with my abit at 133mhz fsb it starts at 50*c,also with this board and this cpu i can only get up to 144fsb stable,anymore and it hangs,probably due to the heat i'd imagine

there is no reason it wouldn't clock as high using the same chip and heatsink. well, unless you've got a bad motherboard.

the only reason it may be reading higher temps is because it's actually reading the internal diode whereas the FIC AN11 was probably reading the temp from under the chip.

looks like i've got a dog of mobo,my first impression was it's £%$*ed,but the shops attitude as usual was it works at 133fsb so theres nothing wrong with it >:-(

it should also work at 166MHz fsb. these boards should run an XP2800 just fine, if yours can't then there is something wrong with it.

i've owned 2 AMD chips, and they were both factory unlocked.

The SLK-800 is probably the best aircooled setup there is for the athlon. With only a 29.4 cfm fan and with a 28 C case temp I get 40 C board sensor and 52C thermal diode (XP2400). :).
With a 37 cfm I got a 15 C temp differance on my last MB and an XP 2000 that was a thermaltake 8025A-2B..

the slk kicks ass:) I have a 80mm fan (pushing 68.51CFM) and just above it a 120MM (case mounted) fan pushing 125CFM, just found out by accident the 80 aint doing the cooling when i forgot to plug it in. well with this setup i get 32C max on the board sensor. I'm currently running prime 95 on my 2600+ clocked at 2430 (11.5*211 @ 1.85V) and its running at 24-25C with the system at 18C (curtesy of the 2 120mm fans in the case side). It has taken me a long time to believe these numbers, but every time I do a "finger check" the heatsink feels cold. not bad for air and general goop (the artic silver is on the way :) ).

I have had it running at 18 cpu and sytem, when i underclocked to 1000MHz which puts my old 1.3Ghz Athlon to shame:)

i've read that the NF7's temperature readings are off by as much as 12°C. use a compunurse or something.

i have the same configuration....now a SLK-900@12x12 fan with good CFM capacity it's less expensive than liquid cooling and adequate for cooling of new Athlon CPU. imho
