I'm having a dilemma on which proc to buy right now. I would really want to get a 4400+ but it will cost me $200 more compared to the 3800+ and I'm not sure if it's worth it. I will also go into some overclocking, the only thing that I don't like with the 3800+ is its low multiplier since I want to OC 1:1. Also which of the two procs would OC well? Thanks for the replies.

BTW, I'll be using this proc for video/phot editing and gaming as well.

I'm also eyeing on those Opty's but the 165 and the 170 has the same low multiplier, 9x and 10x respectively and they are hard to come by here in our place.

4400 has double the cache and for the most part a 4400+ will clock 200 mhz more under same conditions

Well, particularly if you want to oc 1:1 (although that doesn't make any sense if you understand how the A64 works) you'll want an opty. Then double that need for an opty if you're using 2GB of RAM. I've found that 2GB of RAM just rocked my 4400+. My Opty 170 has no problems where the 4400+ failed. Not to mention higher oc on default volts (and likely raised volts if I tried that). I'm currently at 10x250 with the Redlines at 250mhz CAS2.5, something that my 4400+, even at a lower multiplier, couldn't even come close to.

If you're concerned about the multiplier then get a 175.

WTF ? Please can you tell us what the problem was with your 4400 and 2GB ? I have just ordered my 4400 !!

Forget about those LOW multi, what rules in AMD64 world is high HTT (get a nice mainboard for that) and pletora of memory dividers, to get closest to your max memory potential. AMD64 cpus ALWAYS use a divider to talk to RAM.

Let's say you buy a 165 (9x), capable of 3000(Nice CPU!), and you have 4800 RAM (rated 300Mhz) : On the CPU side you'll choose HTT = 333, multi = 9. Since your memory can't handle 333 HTT, you use the 180 divider. so your memory divider (the one you see on CPU-Z memory tab) will be the integer nearest and over 9(CPU Multi)/ (9/10) (Mem divider i bios) = 10.

So your ram will run at 300, which is CPU/10.

If you buy a 170 (10x), and run the memory 1:1 with HTT=300. you'll end with the very same memory divider : 10.
