I've some trace of a burnt chip on my maze3 and i want to lap it. Will 600 grit be enough? i don't expect a mirror finish but i don't either to have higher temp

600 grit will do a decent job, but 800- 1200 would do even better. Your basic goal is to get a mirror finish.

Autozone, Pep Boys, Discount Auto to name a few have 800-2000 grit.

Actually, I've heard, done, tested, whatever, that 600 is about perfect. if you have a perfectly flat mirror finish, it just pushes the AS out of the way, and basically defeats the purpose of the arctic silver being there. But a near mirror finish with 600g leaves small grooves for it to go in. Wich is what it was made for. To fill in the gaps.

I've tired this on a few different hsf's and there wasn't much of a temp differance, but it proved the mirror finish theory to be wrong.

Its a small sacrifice for performance. Shouldn't take you but a couple days to get to one then;)

Seriously though, you can find fine-grit sandpaper at any autoparts depot. I'm sure every country has to have one.
