View Full Version : How the hell do you insulate PCIE slot? Nifty 56k killer frosted card pics!

So I went to run DI on my x800pro again tonight and I FINALLY got it to work out right after some moddage of the tube BUT every 15 minutes I'd get artifacts all over, pull the card, dry up PCIE slot and connector, and I'd be good. Grease sure isn't the answer because I used TONS in the slot and on the cards connector. Where is all the condensation coming from and how do I stop it?

Nice pics :) Well if your using grease all in the slot and around it my guess is it's the card itself. Maybe some more nailpolish around the core area. ;)

or liquid electrical tape ;)

is the card still working??

Yes it's still working.

what do you mean by the warm/hot water?

Coat entire card in nail polish
Coat area up to and around mobo slot in nail polish
dielectric grease in slot

For example my old 9700 Pro :D

Also I can tell you right now, shim is nice for protecting your core, but your card will frost up a lot more with it. I've been through a few X800's, and I was really suprised.... at first I was like WTF is causing all this build-up, it never used to get this bad.... then I realized the shim just transfers cold a lot better throughout the card. If you don't have it and just make good contact with core, it will be a lot easier to manage ;)

I figured it was the shim... Tried taking it off but it was harder than on my 9800 and 9500... What gives?

this seems to work for me very well, although the ramsinks get ice cold to the touch, nothing you can do about that. In these pictures i only did about an inch around the core, but what i then did was about 2 1/2" around the core, so basically the entire card except the power area, hope this helps. :)
and for the pci-e slot i basically did a combo of silicone, and cork tape w/ nail polish.

i have also tried liquid electric tape to substitute the silicone and it seemed to work aswell.

Ermm... Shouldnt the acryllic plate be pushing on ur insulation? Springs are supposed to push on the acryllic.

He's got the ramsink there there, so it wouldn't work.

Cleaned all the grease, popped the shim, recoating in nail polish now. Will reinsulate the slot area as well. Should be good when I run DI chilled alky :D

Why would I push acrylic on insulation? I don't see much point in less pressure and less insulation lmao.

hi there it my first time i post plz don't think i mad, you need to look this at a other way's.. for the things is you have to deal the cold you and harm air, i look you need to heat up the back of the m/b i done this by use a vaporchill heating thing from there cpus, and i found the best to deal the card is useing ,, Bee waXs it very ez to us,, it able to come off . then you sould use a small fan to keep blow air around the card this way it stop air geting alot colder,, around the card. if need to know how to use the bee's wax just ask
:woot:

It's the same as before but I cleaned off all the grease and put more nail polish near the PCIE connector where I suspect condensation was an issue as I vaguly remember accidentaly removing some of the nailpolish there one time.

you really should rub di-electric grease IN the slot and on the PCI-E column of the card.

I used excessive amounts...

Good, now all you have to worry about is your ramsinks freezing over.

Seems like a dumb question, but with the dielectric grease in the slot it doesnt get in the way of the contacts?

Doesn't seem to, do the same for CPU socket doesn't interfere any.

They froze over fine. If the card frosts its not a big deal. I had issues with the slot area I think... Cuz if I took it out, wiped it clean, and put it back, it booted and ran fine.

Yes, i think the ramsinks icing over is a good thing :) cooling the memory drastically for more clocks.

I doubt it... My ram sinks were chilly the first try a week or so ago and still artifacts at 615 :( Even ramsinks and 2 fans makes no difference over passive with water on GPU.

afireinside, i have the same results, i run passive mem now ever since finding no benefit from RAM sinking, faning, etc
