View Full Version : One 74gb Raptor better game performance than 2x 36gb raptors in RAID 0?
I browsed around and couldn't find any benchmarks that show 2x 36gb raptors in RAID 0 are faster/better than 1 74gb raptor drive.
Has anyone tried both of these setups and seen a difference? Or maybe you've seen an article that clearly shows some kind of a difference?

I've had both and have not noticed a difference other than noise. Anandtech had an article that compared them, IIRC.

i like the single 74gb better IMO and I have had both
not a big difference but why spend more money on two drives vs one and also why limit your storage size like that

I think with a good hardware RAID controller you would notice a difference, but not while gaming. With some other disk-intensive tasks you wouldn't see performed on most desktops maybe...

Depending on the type of games you play, the dual raptor in raid 0 can be preferable. Games that have loading times between zones, mmorpg's like everquest, everquest 2, starwars galaxies, and possibly world of warcraft, should benefit greatly from the raid 0. Zoning involves intensive read/write operations, and raid 0 can cut zone times in half. I've played EQ for years, and built a comp for an EQ buddy that has 2 - 36gb raptors in raid 0, and the difference was very significant, and noticeable.
If you just play 1st person shooters then I think you would gain almost no benefit from raid 0. I read that Anandtech article quite a while back as well, and in most situations there wasn't much noticeable difference.

Yeah the raptors are noisy like their big brothers, the SCSI drives... no worries, it's not defective.

my freind just got a pair of 80gig raptors and the moment he popped it in it began to make loud clicky sounds. No worries..noisy but fast

I don't know your raptors but mines are quiet. All 4 of them. I used Hitachi 15K Scsi drives for a while and the difference in noise was noticable. My old rig was really near silent for a while. I had Zalman on CPU, 2x 11DbA Silenx 120fans for the case and for a while I had to use mobo's integrated vidcard cuz my belowed 6800U was passed away (check my sig......himmmgg! *teary eyes*.....I'm sorry the wound's still fresh). Anyway, let me tell you those Raptors were virtually silent for the most part. Raptors are the best HD's in the market IMO. If I had the money I'd buy 4 more.
