ok, I can copy my dvd to my hard drive, but how would I burn it to a dvd-rw? what format and program and such.

There are many programs you can use to copy a dvd. Go HERE (http://www.doom9.org/) and look at the guides. Most of the software needed is Freeware and is simple to use.
