I have an antec truecontrol 550. About a week ago the fans stopped spinning and the fan only connectors didn't work either. So then I let the power supply run without fans for a couple days and I heard a pop. When I opened it up to replace the fan I found a capacitor that says: (M)P10 and also 20UF 16V. Is this still safe to run or do I need to buy a new power supply?

why dont u just replace the cap?Fan died, continued to run it, cap exploaded!

Now would you trust your system to that abused & "known bad" PSU?

The Psu is little over a year old. I would try to replace it but i have no idea where it went and i dont have the soldering skills to do that. Thanks for the advice, looks like new psu for me :( i was thinking of the seasonic s12 600 watt, i have sli and this is the only i have seen with two pci-e connectors.

thanks!

The fan may have died, causing the cap(s) to overheat and explode. It's really not that hard to replace the caps in question. If they are bulged at the top, or leaking anywhere at all, then it is a bad cap.

No great skill is needed to fix it. Just find the cap at Digikey.com that has the same value (higher temp this time though, I never use lower than 85 C.), and replace it and the fan. A cheap Radio Shack soldering Iron, 20 dollars including S/H for ALL the parts, and you are back in business. The PSU is Already dead, so what do you have to lose? I've repaired several mobos with bad caps and dozens of damaged PSU's over the years, and I'm not exactly a skilled solderer. I have a few different tips for my cheapo pen-iron, and work on the kitchen table.

Throw it away and buy a new one.
